Thanks, I appreciate that. I know, I need to at least do an update video soon. I have been busy and there has not been much going on. All of my colonies except my Pogo. barbatus are doing fantastic. I am going to have to upgrade and move all of my colonies pretty soon to bigger formicarium. I think I have enough for this move at least. lol
Here's Something to tell you: Which country is This Cheerful woman (Smile City Marina) from? I think she is from NYC, But she lives in New Benton City in The Island of "Jeju"
There is another really nice Rephtalia figure coming out. I would check it out before you purchase this one. Although, I like this one better than the new one coming out, but I did preorder the new one anyways. lol
Is it possible that a virgin worker laid unfertilized eggs? I know honeybees will do that in the absence of a legit queen. Not sure about ants. If that's the case though, the eggs would hatch into males
@@Bradimus1981 if it's an infertile worker laying, and not the queen, yes the larvae would develop into a male alate. The cocoon would also be larger than normal for a typical worker, so that can be an indication before they emerge
@@Bradimus1981 yep i'll be interested as well. I just received a P. badius queen from stateside today. She's about twice as big as my P. occidentallis queen so this should be fun
I purchased a few items from Antscanada YEARS ago when the ant hobby was just starting to build up. I never used them. I have no experience with the products, so I cannot form an opinion. I used to support his channel, but honestly... These days I do not support his channel. Too much entertainment and not enough education for my taste, but credit where credit is due, he did greatly assist the hobby.
Man I complain about this VERY thing ALL the time. I have gotten to the point that I only eat out once every 6 weeks or so. A few years ago I ate out at least 5 times a week. The best pizza place in my town that was 9 stars out of 10 5 years ago is 5 stars out of 10 now. It's just sad.
looks like a chain of pizza places over here that we used to have called extreme pizza. They used the same style conveyor belt oven, everything you pointed out is a sign of fast food pizza when you don't have a standardized dough/ sauce/ cheese ratio or oven times.
I think a Camponotus would round out your collection and they get majors, which is always cool. You don't need to feed the Honeypots protein everyday, as my buddy feeds his protein twice a week and they are doing exceptionally well.
That is what everyone is pretty much suggesting. If or when I do decide to get a Novo. colony, I will be requesting that Mack at THA make me a very large outworld for the colony. lol
Don't usually leave comments, but damn mate, I'm really digging your videos. So great to actually get a good look at the overall setups as well as the ants, and the way you show the individual parts slowly is extremely helpful! (at least to all of us out there who are new to this gig and trying to find out what doesn't result in genocide!) Keep it up!
Thanks, I really appreciate what you said. I will try my best. I suppose I should do more individual videos. I am going to feed my ants later today, perhaps I will do a video on that. Kind of a pain to record by myself though. lol
@@Carebaraa Fast growth? No! lol j/k The colonies I have seem to be growing pretty quickly. I do not know how some people can keep any of the super fast growing colonies like Solenopsis species.
@@Carebaraa What I can say is that if I plan on getting any Novomessor species, I am going to have Mack at THA build me a pretty darn large outworld for them.
I want to thank everyone for their condolences and advice. I suppose I should have explained my situation a bit better though. Even though I wanted this colony to succeed and grow, it is not so terrible that I lost one of my Pogo. colonies. I have more space now to try a different species to keep. Let me say this again though, "I would NEVER purposely harm or destroy a colony simply to try another." I am just making "lemonade out of lemons".
I have said this on the THA FB page, if I was collecting my own queens and I had a bunch, I would try to introduce a new queen, but I am not going to purchase one to try this. It is far too risky.
@@sebastianiruretagoyena That is thoughtful of you. I rather someone get the queen and grow a new colony though. I also have to factor that something within the entire colony may have gone wrong, so I am more inclined to let things go and clean out the formicarium.
I’ve managed to introduce new queens to colonies, keep feeding the queenless colony, it could still be possible to save them. What you need to do is take the new queen, put her in the fridge for a few hours, and after you take her out, take 5-10 workers from the queenless colony and freeze them in a separate container for 2-5 minutes. Then put the frozen workers into the queens tube and put the queens tube back in the fridge for a few hours, if they are acting like a colony together, the first step is completed. The second step is to take around 1-5 workers from the queenless colony, don’t freeze or put these workers in the fridge, put the workers in the test tube with the queen, if these workers don’t attack the queen or the workers that were frozen, the final step is almost complete, all you have to do now is put the tube into the outworld of the queenless colony, and the queen will move into the nest. I have done a similar technique to this many times with Lasius colonies to introduce new/parasitic queens to colonies. Some people say vinegar works better at removing scent than freezing but idk. The vinegar method would be to dip the new queen in vinegar for a few seconds and then to dry her off, then take a worker from the queenless colony a dip that in the vinegar too and introduce them, then take a worker from the queenless colony without dipping it in vinegar, and put it and the queen with its vinegar worker into the fridge for a few hours and then take the unvinegared worker and introduce it to the queen and it’s worker, if there’s no aggression, take another worker from the queenless colony but don’t put it in the fridge or dip it in vinegar, just put it in the tube, if the 4 get along, put the tube in the outworld of the queenless colony. Both methods have a chance of helping you save your colony.
Yeah, I will not offer them any more seeds, they seem to have enough, but I will continue to offer them water and let them do "their thing" until the final workers passes.
@@JaguarsRegoated Mack at THA may have some. The time of year to get queens is a bit different than a lot of species, I do not know myself. I wish I could be of more help.
I have the one by the same company where she is wearing her school uniform. I like this one better, but tough choices. lol I just wish her breasts were a bit smaller with this figure.
It seems that the workers have increased the humidity inside that test-tube. Which is pretty cool. I am going to feed them tonight some freshly killed flightless fruit flies. Did anyone see any eggs in my previous videos of this colony? lol
It's pretty interesting to consider the differences between the species in this genus and how that relates to their ecological niches. Thanks for the interesting video!
If the queen does not move into the THA formicarium soon, I will have to move her myself. lol It is not a big deal. I basically remove the THA tube insert and place it into the outworld of her new home.
@@Owen15422 The THA Mini-Hearth is about the same size as this one. Since they seem to be doing so well right now, I will keep the setup like this for a bit longer. You could be right, but sometimes queens can be just super stubborn.
I have. lol I have been trying to find the right shelves on and off for several years now. If I owned this apartment I would have made several custom made pieces of furniture by now. lol
Good video . Very interesting topic I’m trying to get a colony of pogo badius & I got a colony of pogo O coming from Mack soon . Going to keep some pogo this year but you ever been interested in Messor barbarus or any messor there red head messor are very nice , I have a small colony just waiting for my majors to come and hope they come with red heads like my old colony I had but good video bro ..
My occidentalis aren't doing anything while my barbatus are trying to explode. They are kept in the same conditions. I'm not sure my occidentalis queen has laid one egg since I had her
Each of my colonies seem to have moments where the queen goes into a egg laying frenzy and than slows down to a crawl. I cannot really offer any advice. My attitude towards all my colonies is that at any moment something could go "wrong" and I could loss a colony unexpectant. It might seem like a poor attitude, but despite ant colonies being resilient, they can be unpredictable. I do recommend to try not to get discouraged and keep trying.
Just a heads up, it can be very difficult to sell/give away/get rid of mature colonies. Most people are only interested in founding queens or small colonies, and that's not to mention transporting or shipping them. Just something to be aware of
Good to know and I understand why people would not want full grown colonies. I am lucky though. Living in Arizona, several of the universities do studies on ants, so I may have that available too.
Hi. I'm from the UK. At present I'm watching videos on RU-vid as I'm looking for some ideas on a new formicarium. I prefer and enjoy watching your channel, and I see you have many formicariums. The formicarium I have at present is now getting too small. So I need to buy something bigger. In your honest opinion, which formicarium would you recommend for a ant colony the size 100+ ants. Could you do a video reviewing and recommending formicariums. Thanks for any help 👍
entirely depends on your species. wakooshi sells a large variety of nests within europe, check them out. pretty sure tarheel ants is incredibly expensive to export
As much as I would like to help you, I simply do not have the experience with the formicarium that would be available to you. I am fortunate to live in the US where THA is much more cost effective to ship and I have some of the best ant species choices. I do enjoy Ant Holleufer on RU-vid and I think he is based in the UK. Sorry I could not be more helpful. Thank you for the support.
