Until today could not understand why Microsoft removed DOS support if its so popular. Kudos to the creators of Dosbox and VDos for bringing DOS back from the dead.
DOS is of interest to a very small portion of Windows users. DOS support was provided by NTVDM on Windows 32-bit. Although NTVDM would also run on Windows 64-bit, it was then forced to switch to emulation (like DOSBox/vDos). That was however that slow and buggy, Microsoft dropped DOS support.
Agree with you. Were it not for DOS emulators, I would be forced to throw away a huge amount of work. As for your question, none other than the creator of vDOS has just answered it.
Tried DosBox-X, but dos compatibility is sketchy. I went back to vanilla DosBox because DosBox-X crashes with simple demos like Fire or Plasma that were compiled with Tasm/Tlink, and which work fine on actual hardware and in DosBox. The only meaningful feature added to DosBox-X is the Ctrl + Scroll Lock handler (needed by programs like GW Basic).
I hope Dosbox-x can evolve in the future. Currently I think it's only worth it for very specific programs, like the case of an acquaintance of mine whose only interest is an old text editor. He loves dosbox-x, perhaps due some feature like that you mentioned.
I am on an Android tablet with the Magic DosBox free app installed and i like to make very special batch files to run inside DOS/DosBox. I made some video(no speech) to show how it works. Have fun.😊
I never used DosBox-X and my PC is broken. Now i am on an Android tablet with the Magic DosBox free app installed. But i think a lot of my batch files can run with DosBox-X too. I began to learn how to make videos(no speech) for my batch files. More details in my pinned comments of my videos. Have fun.
@@maxmuster7003 I will take a look. It is fantastic that DOS apps can run on tablets and cellphones nowadays. Maybe in a near future we can run (decently) DOS apps and batches hosted in remote servers. It would be great!
In the documentation i found this note: "In text modes, all coordinates are specified as multiples of the cell size." But i figure it out that this is not true using the default text screen with 8x16 character size. I have to divide both coordinates by 8 and not the the y-coordinate divided by 16 to calculate the row and collumn on the screen using DosBox to get the mouse coordinates with int 33h software interrupt.
I'm totally ignorant in matters of low level techniques, ASM etc. In this video i used a built-in feature of the language that is very simple to handle. Some time ago i tested a DOS mouse util that worked great. It allowed moreoever copy/paste blocks of text, but i cant remember its name. Here i'm sharing a bunch of mouse utils from my DOS collection. It seems great, but i cant even remember if i have tried them someday: drive.google.com/file/d/1wWv3SF-4BXMV06XmTz1tnb1EUzYodgZM/view?usp=sharing
I made a first mouse support for batch files using DosBox with a touch screen, but i dont know how to click the mouse button on a touch screen without using a mouse. I can move the mouse pointer and then i can press a key on the keyboard to print a text on the last mouse location. For this i got the mouse coordinates and put the values into 2 enviroment variables and a second routine use the enviroment variables to calculate the address for output the text on this location.
CMD is a Windows executable made to run in Windows only. I have DosBox, but no Windows. I am on an Android tablet with a DosBox app installed to run DOS applications, but not Windows applications.
It would be great if it were possible to install Vdosplus on your tablet.. It's more flexible and customisable, and also faster to run applications (not games). It is really a gem!
Yes, you can use fonts on command prompt and also inside applications, maybe the most of them. Some apps will reset font, and games problably always will do it. If you want the font pack, let me know
@@text_mode I made a *picture to character converter* using the BIOS software interrupt int 10h with AX=1110h user font for monochrome pictures with 112x112 pixel to display the pictures inside a block of 7x14 (extended) ASCII character on the default 80x25 text screen with 8x16 font size published on sourceforge.
@@maxmuster7003 Wow that seems cool. I've just downloaded it.. going to try it some of these days on weekend. Thx for the hint Text files/fonts/dos drawing interest me so much!
It´s correct.. I use to lauch CMD inside vDosPlus that is much better than Dosbox for applications, not games or anything related with graphic capabilities like screensavers and even fonts like shown in the video. CMD /c notepad somefile.txt CMD /c start www.youtube.com / ..... start track.mp3 / .... start taskmgr (task manager) /... taskkill /t /im someApp.exe etc etc - all this works fine on Vdosplus
