I feel a lot of these commenters miss that isn't a glorification of the British Empire. Now, I know Kipling wasn't exactly a saint (mfer enshrined the popularity of the term "white man's burden"), but this poem is pretty clearly not 'WOOO GO BEING A COLONIAL SOLDIER IS AWESOME'. I feel Leslie Fish's recording gets the message of how terrible it is to be a colonial soldier best.
The best version of this song was by Peter Dawson, Victorian and Edwardian era Tenor from Australia. Even though the Boer War was mostly fought along existing railways, a lot of advances required long marches...as they had been in the Zulu wars and the Sudan expeditions.
As a Kiwi, I had no idea this existed. Military and patriotism isn’t valued at all in our country. Our airforce is operating 60 year old aircraft with only some being replaced on the last five years, and this was lost to time. Never in my life have I heard this before, and that’s sad.
Imo we need to abolish the military outside of the navy (with an air wing) and revert back to militia system we used to have. The only full time force we should have besides a first rate navy and air wing would be the SAS and commando units. We don't need to be able to project force other than protecting our EEZ, which we currently do a very poor job of. Would save a lot of money and would promote a lot more patriotism.
