The thing that I found limited me with shapes was they didn't help me to learn the notes. I started playing around with just ignoring the shapes and just following the notes up and down the neck. It kind of sucked at first, but after a lot of practice I realised that I basically knew where all the notes are all over the entire fretboard. With that information, playing through chord changes and moving up and down the neck got easier no matter what the key of the song was. My biggest focus at the moment is trying to improve my rhythm and speed. Im comfortable jamming around at 80 bpm, but it gets harder the more the tempo increases.

Dude, with all respect, with that tiny video you can’t see sh**. Also, the content doesn’t live up to expectations. Your ‘secrets’ is eventually 1 concept that is shared by so many players. And I had to sit 12 minutes watching a slideshow for that. 🙄

It would be nice if the video of the fretting hand wasn't in a small circle. There's plenty of screen real estate to be used.

I'd love a lesson on how to use non-diatonic chords in songwriting. You already touched on this in your blues lesson.

u should minimize the vid , it's too wide .

When you start showing the fretboard, why keep the screen in the circle? You have the whole screen to use and just put the text behind you. That would be more appealing. Good stuff though 👍

Thanks for this vid. This is the way the fretboard should be taught for beginners. Gives a clear roadmap to learning how to actually become a good guitarist rather than just spamming pentatonics.

Great lesson. Happy it showed up in my feed. Love the idea of making small talk for a bit and work up from there. Useful for the next jam session when I come out from behind the kit and strap on the guitar.

Good video, first time I heard of Caged was the Bill Edwards book "Fretboard Logic," years ago, but I don't know if he ever called it that. I put it aside. I was against it for a long while but so many online teachers loved it I learned it but never really helped me. Actually those triads are litte pieces of caged shapes. I have been trying to learn all the triad shapes, I have diagrams and courses on them and saved videos on triads. Any time I see a teacher who is against, or skeptical, of Caged I like it. Charlie Long had a video recently titled, "Caged is cracked," on the limitations of it.

I've been gaslighting myself for years over the caged system and whether I just didn't get it or if it's just not good. Turns out I understand it afterall and it's just sh*t. Thanks for making this video and illuminating things 😂

Could we learn more about how to apply this? Because so far, we are playing all the notes consecutively. There must be more than that.

Good vid. I think learning the solfège system is useful too. It helps you understand each note in a scale and how they interact with each other. Learning really basic melodies like Mary had a little lamb and saints go marching helped me understand this.

When you limit yourself to pentatonic shapes you will inherently play the same licks

thank you for explaining it so clearly, i've always been doing this but don't know how to taught it to my friends. i learn piano first back in primary schools and those things came along when i learn guitar. when i first starting out the guitar i always thought that the basic chords doesn't make sense and lack of 'variety' so i start incorporating this kind of thing along. (sorry if these sentences doesn't make sense english is not my 1st language). again thank you very much sir

Good advise. I would get a lot more out of your videos if I could actually see what you were doing rather than it being hidden in a tiny circle in the corner. Just a thought. It is interesting that examples like yours seem to be based around those more orchestral numbers like Hotel California, that just scream out for embellishment. What about a more simple song like Swinging Doors for instance. Just a 1, 4, 5 song.

Per jazz guitarist Joe Pass, improvisation is playing what you know. SRV was playing since he was a teen, so he had a lot stored in his head. This is why he could play so well. Just keep learning songs and listening to music.
