@EmmaFalcornerArt Would they?😁 i,ve never tryed it. I draw and paint now in a canson mixed media a4 sketchbook ✌🏾👍🏾👋🏾 would be cool i,ve never drawn or painted on toned paper before😁
@@lifeismusicparnadonkers toned paper is great for gouache as it has so much opacity. The paper acts as a mid tone so you can go straight in with light or dark. It’s a lot of fun! If you want to test the idea before you buy you could try painting a wash of grey on your current paper first, let it dry and then paint on top. I would suggest a wash of your acrylagouache or a waterproof ink so it doesn’t bleed in to what you paint on top
@@EmmaFalconerArt thank you so mutch for this information. I realy appriciate it. I....i am still doubting between the canson aquarel sketchbooks and the mixed me sketchbooks from canson. Thegouache paint doesnt dry that quick on mixed media paper as it has done on my canson a4 watercolour paper. But the acrylic gouache dry,s in no time and doesnt come off of the mixed media paper. So i don,t know witch on too choose🤔Btw the aquarel sketchbooks are way cheaper than the mixed media sketchbooks from canson 😁✌🏾👍🏾🎨👋🏾
I love the toned tan and toned gray sketchbooks of Strath more. I wanna use acrylic paint on the strath more sketchbook,s. I am not sure it will hold acrylic paints
Strathmore have a few different weights of paper in their grey toned paper range, you may get some warping but worth a try. You could also try adding some clear gesso to prime your pages first.
There aren’t a great deal of watercolour sketchbooks in a square format around, but Arteza makes one which is ok. It seems one side of the page is a big rougher which is suited to watercolour and a smoother side which would be more suited for your graphite. I tend to treat these sketchbooks a little more like mixed media than strictly watercolour. These are a cellulose paper so more on the affordable side and come in packs of 2 on Amazon. I have seen a couple of square watercolour sketchbooks on Amazon but I haven’t tried them.
There’s a lot of options you could go with, I recently purchased a Jane Davenport mixed media sketchbook, I think it’s 8.5”x11” and the paper is quite thick. It’s hard bound, so hard cover and not spiral bound. Strathmore has some nice options and winsor and newton. It depends on where you are and what is available to you.
This is exactly what I've been looking for- a comparison of a bunch of different sketchbooks with tons of brands I was interested in. Off to find watercolour review videos, might check out those hybrid ones too. Great video, keep up the stellar work!
I’m so glad you found it helpful! I actually wouldn’t mind making another video on this comparing a few more as I have a bit of a sketchbook buying obsession and have acquired more since I made this video. I have a problem haha. I should look at doing other comparisons in the future too, I’ll add them to my list. Thanks for your comment 😊
I love A4 spiral bound Canson mixed media sketchbooks. I find the paper thick enough for what I’m doing, even with wet media. I also adore the Strathmore toned tan and grey books but I only use them for mostly dry and some ink. I tried the strathmore mixed media and they didn’t impress me at all.
The tip I'll give is to use a pallet knife or similar to mix the paints up right away, don't just open and go. They need to be mixed. Spray a spritz of distilled water and mix each cup then they will be perfect! They will be wonderful if you mix them. Fun video, thanks.
You are underrated. You are outstanding! I was looking for some art channels to follow and I came across yours. I'm subscribing and sharing. You're amazing
Multimedia is the same as mixed media, being able to use several mediums, eg. Watercolour, pencils, acrylic etc usually the sketchbook will specify which mediums it will accept
Hi, I drew the characters from the It movie by using photo references, stills from the movie, I sketched them and used liquid ink to paint them. I can look at doing a tutorial on this in future, my style kind of varies between semi realism and illustration, I can always look at doing tutorials on both I guess
Hey:)) I search for a sketchbook who can take watercolor veeerrry good and don’t wrinkle. And also is perfect for sharpies and normal pencil drawing yk?? What should I get?
I would try and find a watercolour sketchbook that's 300gsm to reduce buckling, 100% cotton is very nice. However if you want to use sharpies and pencils a mixed media sketchbook might serve you better. I'm not sure what's available where you are but perhaps stillman and birn beta, maybe even the delta series. I also like the strathmore visual mixed media, 100% cotton. Sometimes it's trial and error. Good luck! 😊
@@fayizasabeek7098 I've had these a few times and I've deleted most of them not knowing what they were, but it had nothing to do with my video so I would just delete them. I missed this one. But thank you for telling me it was a harmful link, I don't need that here. Thanks again.
My perfect sketchbook: Small (not way too small) Hardcover I dont need to rip the pages out! Can take ink, lead, charcoal, paint, waterpaint About this size: ......................................................................
@@tobyswishesxo9924 awesome! Well it sounds like you need a mixed media one, stillman and birn make some hardcover sketchbooks in A4 size, but that may be too big? Perhaps a moleskins watercolour or (i haven't reviewed them here, but I hear good things) the Paul ruebens hot pressed watercolour book or the etchr. These are pricier as they are 100% cotton though. I guess it depends on how you watercolour, I like using a lot of water so I prefer 300gsm 100% cotton. But if you're just doing light washes you'll have more options.
Do you know a sketchbook that is like this? If so please send me the link to buy it >_> Has a bendable cover Has a strap to close it Pure white paper Can take any pencil/pen Not too expensive Easy to carry around Kind of small, not too small. Kind of this size: 3:30 Can take markers (any kind) Can take colored pencil
I didn't understand the name of the very last sketchbook. I am always looking for cotton paper watercolor sketchbooks to try and I tried reading the name by pausing the video. But I just couldn't catch the name at the upper corner.
@@EmmaFalconerArt thank you so much Emma. It should be easy to find in Luxembourg, I saw it's produced in the Netherlands. Did you like using it? As a watercolor sketchbook I mean
@@huskytail i have only done a few paintings in it but I am enjoying using it. It's nice and thick so I've even painted on both sides of the paper with no issues. It wasn't great with the water soluble markers but watercolour paint was fine. These are the paintings I created in this book: instagram.com/p/CLFfRJsj9pm/?igshid=ira92zjv88j4 instagram.com/p/CKPal2RrUzb/?igshid=z936gn51n44x I used a lot of layers, no issues for me. And this is the first painting I did in the book ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ILlUNiCpcXE.html
I had no idea that the Strathmore Visual sketchbooks were cotton. I always assumed they were wood pulp since they're so cheap. I checked the site just now and I'm officially excited. The watercolour sketchbook ison my Amazon list and I can wait to try it. Thanks so much this info
The vision mixed media sketchbooks probably are wood pulp, I couldn't find a lot of info for them, but yeah the visusl mixed media is 100% cotton. They're not cheap where I am unfortunately. Happy this very was helpful, enjoy your new sketchbook !
@@fangchick93 apologies, auto correct stitched me up, I also meant the visual one lol I personally prefer the visual mixed media for watercolour, over the strathmore watercolour sketchbook
@@SarasStudio i believe strathmore and stillman and birn make sketchbooks like you're after. I have the strathmore one, but got it after I made this video.
That really is a personal preference, but if you're trying to learn tonal value it's very handy and you can create some very interesting effects with it.
