This Questar Zone RU-vid channel serves to inspire, educate and entertain about Questar telescopes, including using, collecting, restoring, maintaining, and servicing. This is an independent site not affiliated with Questar Corporation.
Questar Zone was created by Ben Langlotz, a patent attorney specializing in optics and other technologies. Ben has been a Questar owner since a teenager, and in 2016 acquired his second of many more Questar scopes. As a collector Ben has become experienced at Questar service and restoration, and is told by the Questar factory that he's the only amateur to have restored the monumental Questar Seven. He also created a replica of the famed cutaway Questar features in 1960s advertising, and tan image is featured as the avatar for this channel.
These videos are a great resource. My solar filter became loose and started flopping down on its own. I found that my 2013 Questar had a metal 0.050 hex tension set screw rather than the nylon set screw you described.
On video for events it is horrible. You can easily miss the action because the 35 is hunting for focus in the macro region... That said I noticed that the lens is BUGGED ad there is no actually no "full time manual focus" on my RF 35... Instead the RF 24mm does not have this problem and I can twist the focus ring to quickly aid focus detection. Can you confirm that all RF 35mm do not have the "full time manual focus" enabled? Do you have the same problem? (I use it on a R6 and R6 MkII - the EOS R does not even have an option for "full time manual focus")
Mercedes told me our GLE could have the illuminated badge installed so I ordered. However I noticed today there’s a harness plugged into or near the back of the current badge. Did yours have that also. No video’s actually show the back of the oem badge. Tia
My Yellow and Orange have something on it....If I just take the fisheye side off.....are the filters exposed enough to clean them (one side)....and if I take the filter holder off the barrel could I access the other side to clean.....Just hoping I don't have to disassemble the barrel to get at both sides...Thanks....great video BTW
Your child is adorable but perhaps not a relevant inclusion. You have clearly a lot of insight and the child is distracting to your presentation’ to you the presenter and to the viewer. Time and place, but thank you in any case.
question when you buy the strip light does the tap fuse connect output come with it? if not then where did you buy the tap few connect ? please. thanks
Hi, your videos are super informative. I have an old Quantum 4 and these are helpful in orienting me towards what to expect if I work on mine. Do you happen to know if the Quantum scopes also used Bristol screws? Thanks, Mark
Exceptional video: the obvious attention as to planning, execution, content, pacing - well nigh perfect. Thanks so much! Question: since making this video, have you had an opportunity to review any newer Questar 3.5's? For example, one outfitted with the Powerguide III + Declination drive, Digital Setting Circles (or even the complete "SlowTo" upgrade?) Or would a Questar purist reject such add-ons a "gilding the lily"? :) Or a Questar outfitted with a Binoviewer...? Again, marvelous video! Steve Ferris Naples, FL
Thanks for the videos. Very interesting. I’ve acquired a field model that I purchased partly to help a fundraiser for Ukraine. By the way, I’m owner of Denkmeier Optical. I design biocular viewers, and they work fantastically with questars and have three different magnification modes that the power switch produces: low/mid and high mags. The high mode is superior than the built-in barlow in the questar units. The low mode produces Reduction and a widee field. The Field Model I obtained has major anodization areas probably affected by foam in a case. I don’t really see any of your videos that show how to remove the rotating section from the field model. I may consider having it re-anodized. Any advice would be appreciated!
I am getting ready to sell my 1990s vintage Questar 3.5” and short pier. In tightening up the solar mirror, I somehow lost the set screw that goes in the filter shaft knob. Do you know what the specs are on the screw and where I can get a replacement? I was able to loosen the screw with an 0.05” hex screw driver. Thanks!!
My aunt has this telescope, and I was using it today. The leg shafts are precisely 1ft long, not including a short (< 0.5")round rubber bit at the end of each which the telescope rests on.
Ben how do you get these parts?? You just call the factory and they send them?? I have called the factory they won't sell me any parts. I have to send my scope to them.
You mentioned sometimes finding corrosion on the stainless steel finder mirror bracket. On sailboats, they have to be very careful to isolate stainless steel from aluminum because they are subject to galvanic corrosion when in contact with one another. I imagine the clear coat on the control box MIGHT help to isolate the two but with screws connecting the two parts electrically there is a chance that any electrical current (like the R.A. drive motor) could contribute to galvanic corrosion at the junction of any stainless steel and aluminium parts.
Hi did your GLE have a radar sensor behind the factory star? My 2021 GLE 350 has the radar sensor behind the factory star. I ordered the parts as described but the illuminated star would not fit with the radar sensor installed. Thx
Are you referring to distronic. Can you please share the link to the star you bought ? I have the radar unit too. You might need a flat star with the star embedded inside the circle for your model. It needs to be removed from inside the grill.
Exactly, if your GLE is equipped with distronic, lane keeping, etc., the illuminated star isn't compatible with your GLE. It's a pity that the illuminated star is only suitable for entry level GLEs.
Yea thank you. Your post of all that I searched for provided great info. I’m currently trying to replace my glc300 2020 LED star emblem. First step is to gently slide and pry the original emblem out. Wish me luck!
its a freaking $4000 telescope! saw one selling a 1964, 3.5” in my area thats why i youtubed it. why is this so expensive? i captured the andromeda galaxy with my $700 camera $500 lens and a $400 star tracker.
