It's a bit irritating that neither Gay Lion or Alan himself mentioned that Triggers HAD specifically told them not to engage the enemy. There's drama and then there's dumbness.
Even watching a few minutes of trench warfare has me in bits - just don't get how men coped. I bet there were lots sent batty like Carey and it was all covered over.
Remember watching this series with my Dad when I was 10yrs old in New Zealand on tv saturday evenings. Brings back lots of memories nearly 40 years on.
All these young socialist men who supposedly care for the working classes let an elderly woman run up and down stairs fetching chairs for them and don't think to invite her to sit down and eat with them at Christmas.
"I don't need a guide or protection. I am an English woman." To the English, the world used to be nothing but a playground full of minions all aspiring to serve for their amusent, convenience and pleasure.
Is Harriet Pringle a reflection of the frights of the writer? The character is too stiff and stuck-up for the occasion.Any woman would have the actor in Egypt as lover long ago in the series in view of the silliness of her husband.
I really love the episode but the character (part) of "Guy" spoils it considerably. The writer of the book was axwoman and she must have had a thing to fry with hervhusband or something for Guy is a real jerk and idiot, and character like his wife here would never marry such a creep.
I was in nafplion when they made this, the greek bloke looking forlorn at52.44 is in fact a Scottish lad from the Gorbals called jam jar Johnny, called that because of the glasses he wore,he died there a year later from the drink and is buried there, part of a great gang of people that lived and worked there for years.
I was in nafplion when they made this,a Scottish lad from the Gorbals called jam jar Johnny is àt 52.44, called jam jar because of his glasses that I think he'd lost by then. He died a year later from the drink, and is buried there,he was part of a great set of people that lived in Greece for years working casually. Jam jar, the Scots who looked more like a greek than a Scot, gone but not forgotten.
Wow! I give this 10 out of 10. Other mini series like "The Winds of War" or "Holocaust" have mirrors of insight into the history of those days. This even made me think of the films "Out of Africa" and "The English Patient". Stories of people, everyday lives, woven into the times that they lived. C.L. Sultzburger's "A Long Row of Candles", memoirs and diaries, 1934-1954: has long been my primary source of reference for those early war years in the Balkans. I found as I watched this series, it took me back to those pages of his. I hope both Thompson and Branagh look back proudly on these earliest days of their career when they became participants in these Fortunes of War.
2024 we're seeing mass migrations today. The wars, the famines and climate catastrophes of one sort or another forcing people to relocate to safety. Island populations are looking for dry land on continents too.
🚩I pay my tv licence but lets get one thing straight there are good bbc1 series I WATCH . BUT but there a many things the BBC SHOWS WHICH I HAVE ABSOLUTLEY HAVE NO INTREST IN WHAT SO EVER. I DONT KNOW HOW THE BBC USE THE LICENCE FEE TO PAY ITS EMPLOYERS DONT KNOW IF THE BBC ARE OVER BUDGETED OR UNDER BUDGETED. ANY WAY THATS WHY I LIKE YOU TUBE OVER THE BBC IF I WHERE YO CHOOSE BETWEEN THE BBC AND YOU TUBE I WOULD CHOOSE YOU TUBE
I'm wondering were people this stupid in wartime, remaining oblivious in countries where increasing fascist violence and soldiers menacingly paraded the streets while they thought 'things' would blow over.
Atmosphere..a lot of it, good camera work..seen like a cross between expresionism and impressionism but a moving painting..music real unlike a certain town in California...
I find it amazing that Harriet travels all over the second biggest continent in the world and runs into the same four people no matter where she goes🤣🙀
Yakimov what a PIF 💯😎 The poms are pompous self-righteous idiots 😮. What the hell are THEY 😮😱🤔 DOING in Romania during the war... The idiotic attitude 😂... Why DID THEY think is perfectly fine, TO be so Close to Germany and they would be immune FROM WAR.....🤪🧐🧐🧐..... THEY are unique in their behaviour... Seriously 😳😲🙄 deserved what they got 😢... ONE should be in their own country, or somewhere fighting the war, instead of naively presuming ALL is fine.... Teaching prat, that frankly know one CARE'S about 🥺😧🥶
absolutely wonderful. I read the book first, actually I read the book two or three times and now I've watched this and it perfectly matched the book. The white outfits were so well done, and the shoes, oh the shoes!
