Great series mate. Haven't done the drive before, somehow, but definitely on my hitlist. You made a very long boring road quite interesting mate, which is no small feat. Appreciate the time you took to make it, top stuff!
We saw a wedge tailed eagle on a recent trip to Pemberton doing exactly what Garry described, feasting on a kangaroo carcass. It was the first time we've seen one, a huge bird. It was probably strong enough to take off with the entire carcass 😅😅
Thanks for documenting your drive Gary, I've been across a few times with the family but not this decade, I should remedy that. I also really enjoy the drive.
Thinking of taking my new Forester to Wilbinga- do you reckon it would go okay? Is it possible to do Wilbinga without getting shrubs scratching down the side of your new car lol?
It all depends on which track you take. Some are tight and some are full of holes where clearance maybe an issue. You will definitely hit some tight tracks somewhere but they aren’t overly bad.
Yeah different motor though. The new 2.8 is tuned up with a little bit more power and torque and has no DPF issues. The 200’s have had a few issues with dusting too so each to there own I guess 👍
Great list Paul. I'm glad you mentioned the need for a rated recovery point. Also good call on the hand-held UHF. Another cheap component you could add to the list is a pair of basic leather work gloves from Bunnings - handy for handling rope or prolonged periods of digging 👍
I went with some roll up recovery tracks. They are heavy duty rubber on stainless steel cable and have worked well for me. I went for them because they take up far less room than the plastic recovery tracks and they have done a good job so far in the few times that I've had to use them. They tuck away nicely in my recovery kit bag. I've been meaning to get a long handled shovel just been lazy and haven't and always resorted to my trusty old foldaway. I do like the idea of the kinetic rope. Gotta say I've never really heard of that before. I've always just used my snatch straps. I've got one that I have always used and one that I have never used but will do when my old one gives up the ghost. My old one is definitely looking like it's seen better days though but it continues to do its job even after all the years I have had it. I have found that the main issue with recovery gear is that people don't know how to use it - all the gear no idea - especially with snatch straps over tow balls. I once had to use a snatch strap on a Lower control arm once of an old ford wagon 2wd SUV stuck up in some dunes because there was literally nowhere else to hook it to. I did warn them that it could stuff their suspension and bend the arm. I don't know if it did cause any damage but it seemed ok once I got it out.
Yes the lower control arms are a common place to winch off in the recovery industry. Kinetic ropes are pretty good and far more durable than the old snatchy.
@Pax-Christi not so much segregated areas just some challenges are easy and some are difficult and some are in between. You just need to drive around and have a look at what you can do. Yeah email info@whitegumfarm.com.au and tell Gary I referred you 👍
thats the only thing i didnt like about my last visit, too hard to know where you are going when going up the hills, especially the ones with a turn up the top while you're still looking at the sky, too easy to go off the edge, needs to put some markers or poles up, i deffinetly want to go back out tho
That’s why you walk obstacles before tackling them blindly and if needed use a spotter. There is no marker posts out in the bush on tracks and challenges 👍
Not only is Momentum your friend in soft dry sand but another very good piece of advice I got in my heavier 4WD vehicle days (2001 PA Challenger) was the best ever that came in real handy in October of 2013 whilst on the Manta Ray Barge to Fraser was "Drive it like ya' stole it!" That October was one of the driest early springs ever in SE QLD and that advice was a bog saver. Especially on the tracks from Eurong through to Central Station. There is one critical error nearly every man and his new dog does at Inskip Point when departing the Manta Ray and that is to stop directly behind the vehicle in front as that boggs down. Just drive around it and do NOT stop at any cost. You'll only get bogged yourself once you lose momentum and drive it like you didn't steal it.
Thanks for posting no nonsense video.. Gone through motorhome, caravan, van conversion , veedub , and now gone down to a Swag, ( after seeing my lads in Aus )and a 2 x 3m tarp awning affixed to suv by suckers, absolutely love it. Swags are just coming on the market in UK ( horrific prices compared to Aus) and are a rare and unusual sight at campsites. We dont have the same camping freedoms as u Aussies ( or weather!) but the spirit is the same! Nice video thank you.
Not a problem at all. Yes we are very fortunate over here with a bit of freedom and great weather. Just had some Rellys from the UK stay with us for a month while on holiday and they couldn’t believe it did not rain once 😂 Cheers mate 👍
It’s called Watch Me Now by The Firework Festival however you find it anywhere. Its from a subscription only music platform used by film makers and content creators 👍
Same what works for me works for me some somewhat fancy gear but not the greatest but it’s ok it works don’t need to buy the NAME if it does the SAME job that’s just me
New sub from 🇨🇦, hit the button because we all can use “lazy bugger” tips. 😁 Should be about enjoying nature, not making more work than staying home would.
nice and simple 😁👌 the lights have elastic on the back that you un clip and then you put light on the pole of awning and re atatch the elastic back onto the light 😎 i have a couple like them and work great 😁👍 keep well and stay safe-ish 😉🍺
Still holding up, kinda. I’ve had to superglue the ones next to lights as they kept falling off. The small ones on the hinge plates are non existent. The rest are all still in place and probably cuts down the dust intake by about 60%
