I lived in Mandeville for 8 years from 1976 to 1984. I recognise a lot of this, but it has really changed. When I bought my house on Gerard (now Girod) steet it was a sleepy little country village of 1800 people. Today it has grown into a town of 12000. Still beautiful. though. In 84 I moved to the mountains of east Tennessee, and am still here. I love it here, but Mandeville will always have a place in my heart.
The yellow paint splash in the middle of the road at about 10:08 was caused by someone in my truck because he didn’t close the can all the way and put the can in the bed of the truck upside down. Lmao
Thanks for the memories. The next one to Mansura brings me closer to home. FYI.. just off what you called Wye Rd. (must be a local thing) after the curve, to the left, stands and old antebellum home where some of the GONE WITH THE WIND scenes said to have been filmed. Also, in Lettsworth (going to the left off Hwy 1) at the river.... took place the Atchafalaya Pop Festival about a year after Woodstock. and in Morganza, there is the little cafe (before the spillway) where scene in EASY RIDER was filmed.
There are so many different pronunciations of Amite. My cousin has a place just north of the Mississippi state line, and the locals up there go down the road to (and this is an approximation) "uh-MYET".
I have a picture of my grandmother standing on this corner in 1938. 690 was railroad tracks back then. I took a picture of my kid in the same spot in 2023.
Imperial has a ton of history to pull on if you include historical Kimmswick which everyone here does. The Anhueser House, the oldest wrought iron bridge in the state, and a town of other historically significant structures that commonly lined towns along the Mississippi such as Imperial and Barnhart.
Ah! Syracuse! The good, the bad, and the ugly… You see so much from the old roads and streets! Thanks for helping us actually see this striking city. Wonder why US 11 didn’t make it to Hiawatha Boulevard?
When you get to those signs about the bus and rail station, you're in the vicinity of the Carrousel Mall (aka the Mall of Central NY); it's 5th in size compared to the Mall of America.
Apparently it's been rebranded as "destiny usa" (in all lowercase). I wasn't aware of that at all. My wife lived in Minneapolis for years, and is very familiar with the Mall of America. I would have been curious to go there and get her opinion of it.
It was a storm system moving across the northeast. We were coming from a 4 month drought down south and it never occurred to me that it would be raining once we were 1000 miles from home.
We were on a temporary route of US-11. I still consider it a clinch! I'm bothered by what happened in the very last segment of US-11, but you'll have to stay tuned for that.
It is good to see Syracuse come to life in your video. The southern entrance south of NY-173 is particularly beautiful, but there are a lot of huge homes along US-11!
Finally, after about 280 miles, you get to US 20 from US 30! Is that the longest rung on the "ladder"? It's quite a charming intersection in this hamlet.
11:20 FATS!! I've passed by there a few times on my way to Rocky and Carlo's in Chalmette. Also, right as you left the St Claude bridge and you sped the video back up, was the turn to get to my high school, Holy Cross. They've rebuilt since Katrina, and my son graduated from there this year. (I realize you're probably a local, and already know about HC) Edit: I hadn't made it to the History lesson yet....😊
Oh Jason and Kari I didn't know y'all very recently got Aldi here in New Orleans. We recently got Aldi here in LaPlace. We also got Kentucky Fried Chicken on Williams Boulevard in Kenner. There is also one on the Westbank in Harvey. Gday from LaPlace, LA
@@braydenjohnson6411 Laplace is part of the New Orleans Metro Area. When someone says New Orleans, they don’t just mean the city, otherwise, it wouldn’t be very inclusive.
I didn’t know you did a US61 series. I met a guy today that had a U.S. 61 sweatshirt , neck tattoo 61, and a gold diamond chain that said 61! He was from Mississippi
GDay from Australia. It's interesting looking at the different businesses as you drive through the town including the multi nationals. We also have KFC and Aldi in Australia.
@@RichardFelstead1949 we very recently got Aldi here in New Orleans. They bought out another chains of grocers. What does the K in KFC stand for in Australia?
I'm paused at 7:24... whenever my folks and I would travel between NYC and Buffalo, we'd use I-690 as part of the trip; the fairgrounds are along the 690 strip by the 5/297/695 exits for Auburn and Solvay.
