Porus defeated Alexander that's why he (Alexander) returned, he did not spare anyones life but escaped to save his own life as he (Alexander) got injured badly. Within a year he died. Alexander never spared any king he defeated.
He didn't lose his battle, he won it. Why do you think Alexander would drop his plan to conquer the world just because he is impressed by the king valor. The Greeks fabricated the story so that they can make it look like Alexander never lost a battle.
