Sometime ago, I think I isolated what makes people miss the eighties: the unapologetic sincerity. From the 1990s onward, caring was cringe and lame, from wisecracking nineties antiheroes through to South Park smugness to Millennial and Gen Z doomerism. By any proper social and economic metric, the 80s were an absolute shit period, but they were also a time when you could be the most enthusiastic, passionate and dead sincere person in the world singing "FIGHT TO SURVIIIIIVE!" at the top of your lungs and nobody would hold it against you. And you'd see that attitude across pop cultures: alongside the neon cheese of American glam rock and soul-infused pop, you'd see hot-blooded Japanese heroes, shamelessly dramatic Hong Kong protags, and European dance clubs going all-in on homegrown disco.
