As a long time track fan (since 1954), it's a pleasure to see this clip. Great competition, topped again by Syedikh, my choice for the greatest male hammer thrower ever, first recognized on the world scene at the Montreal Olys in 1976. this meet was an incredible 15 years later. Choices for the GOATs in the other throwing events are clear in my mind - Oerter and Zelezny. For the shot put, might have to wait a few more years, as Crouser is breaking new ground
Strangely enough, I shot this video. It looks like it has been copied a few hundred times as the quality is even worse than what my old Handicam could manage.
When people watch this, I hope they gain great respect for the officials who work this event. The footwork happens so fast and it takes years to get comfortable and confident calling foot fouls. I know, I officiate the event frequently. It’s spectacular in person. Those photographers were incredibly foolhardy. You won’t see them there like that nowadays because safety doesn’t allow it- for obvious reasons. After a couple of them were decapitated the message finally got through.
Best discus coach of our time! He loves to help people. I found Him on Facebook and He looked at my programme and gave me great advice. Both Mac Wilkins and Wolfgang Schmidt mastered the back of the circle entry, in my opinion. Although, both different. I think Wolfgang would have been the all time great if He wasn't imprisoned for 6 years. Both great great men and athletes.
