What a staggering exercise in Editing. From the choice of clips, to the overall rhythm, variety of characters and especially the dead-on lip sync moments. I can't even imagine how long this must have taken. Brilliant - absolutely first rate!
It took me 3 days to complete over a long weekend but I had been listening to the song and thinking about clips for it for a couple of months earlier, then one weekend of ripping DVD's and editing :)
I watch this pretty regularly, and I always wonder how intentional it was on op's part that this song kind of feels like a perfect encapsulation of star trek's (especially tos) themes of, like, economic tourism? Like the crew of the enterprise, coming from their utopian society on a mission of curiosity and discovery really are kind of like a rich kid playing at being working class to enrich themselves with authenticity or whatever but then getting way more than they bargained for, and at the same time, encountering all these godly aliens who are even more privileged and bored than they are who use them as playthings for their own entertainment. like that line "and everybody hates a tourist, especially one who thinks it's all such a laugh", one way or the other, isn't that the plot of so many of those old episodes? anyway great vid 👍

Awww. Thanks :) The clip was spoken word/video so the clip had to match the lyrics of the song so in some ways all it took was meticulous editing and a trekker knowledge of Star Trek but yes wanted to inject humour too :) But in some ways it's like Michelangelo said "The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work. It is already there, I just have to chisel away the superfluous material."
1st time seeing this and absolutely thrilled to find it. I haven't watched these types of clips for years and was hesitant to click onto it, only to find that your inspired concept and playful editing was an absolute fun ride. Thanks for doing this.
Great video... gotta mention that Joe Jackson duets on this with Shatner for the actual singing. They both do amazing, with Ben Folds providing the music. So many stars...
i have to say, in my opinion, this is the best video on RU-vid. i return to it time and time again. you are obviously very talented and have lots of patience!
A big thankyou to Bill Shatner and Joe Jackson for this but... Lord Ricco, please take a bow! Such a funny, upbeat and a feel good video. It's great to be 62 yrs old and remember the old Star Trek and Jackson's great voice and the bass playing from my earlier days. Friday night, I often dance around the living room with this clip at full blast.😀😀😀😀😀. PS...Does anybody know how to stick the leg back onto a coffee table?🤭
Absolutely nailed it. You definitely have skills that most of humanity will never get near. Very inspirational. If you aren’t someone famous 11 years after making this video, it’s probably because you are too modest…. Also have to add that proof of your talent (some might say genius) is that this whole comment section is full of praise. People pouring their hearts out, reliving the past, with no vitriol or nastiness. I’d go so far as to you are a peacemaker.
