What I did was drill pilot holes, then I used galvanized finishing nails at the joints. I nailed the Hardie board down, caulked the joints, and then painted the exterior. It looks great!

The problem is that newer houses are built airtight… (Or I should say, much tighter than they were in the past) consequently,… When another fan in the house is running i.e.: bathroom fans, power vented, gas, water heater, cooking exhaust fan… Etc. etc. very often they did not include a make up air fan or a balanced ventilation system that brings fresh air into the home. Consequently… I have seen several cases where moisture is sucked in down through the dryer vent (and the customer has theirA/C running)… The metal of the internal parts of the dryer provide a cold condensing service for moisture to accumulate… The solution in some instances to have a make up air fan installed , and wired in series with the range hood… Or you can have an HRV/ERV unit installed and if it’s properly installed in commissioned correctly, this will solve the problem …… short term, you can install a dryer exhaust duct that has a tight fitting damper than cheap louvers, etc.… But that is just a Band-Aid what you really need is some kind of active makeup air so it doesn’t suck hot moist, humid air down the dryer vent backwards…… I am in the HVAC business as well as the appliance business and plumbing, etc.. We see this problem all the time… It is caused By poorly written building codes… As far as I know, Massachusetts is the only state that requires a make up air fan for range hood… I hope this information helps someone who has this problem, I have seen cases where there is a tremendous amount of water inside of the dryer at the end of every night …..

I build a stand-alone cube like structure with a flat insulated roof, it leaked so I build another slightly slanted roof on top of the flat roof and because I did not want it to leak again, sealed the sides very well. Unfortunately, what is happening is condensation is now forming as we have around a 30-degree difference between the night and peak of day and water is leaking through the ceiling, so I solved one problem only to have another. Long term house storage........If the air conditioning is not running in a home to pull humidity out of the house mold could develop on and or inside the walls. Mold in a house is the worst thing ever. The water heater should run at 125 F to prevent bacteria in the tank. Security systems should be running in case of theft. Home owners insurance should stay in place also. Auto insurance should stay current in case the cars are still in the garage and stolen or damaged. In the winter if the weather is severely cold let the faucets drip/dribble to prevent water pipe line cracks. One can not just shut down a house for months or years and expect to sell it with the possible damage when leaving it not running basically lived in.

Hey guys. I have a barn shaped house. No attic. The roof has 6" rafters. There is no ridge vent. Currently on hot days the moisture has come through the drywall tape. I cut some of the ceiling drywall off and it was moist with some mold. Will a ridge vent be enough? If not, what else can be done? No soffets either.

I had water coming in the ridge vent during heavy rain/high winds until I covered the ridge vents. Thanks for all you do. I don't remember what the effect is called but soffits gables and ridge was bad for me. Fixed now

Here's my advice. Buy a home with a well designed vented attic with lots of insulation, and preferably no HVAC equipment in the attic. Open cell spray foam will also absorb water.

I have a stain that seems to be slowly growing (2-3 ft long) that is in the doorway between my bedroom and family room. I believe it to be a crack in the slab that is causing the stain. Use a formica cutter that looks simular to a utility knife and score it on the back side 3 or 4 times until almost all the way thru then you can snap it apart.
