My introduction to Phish by way of seeing this one late night on MTV. I thought they were a part of that wave of Alternative bands from that time period like Primus, Toad The Wet Sprocket, The Bevis Frond, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, etc. But I soon learned they're the Grateful Dead of the 90's and Millennium.
Still to this day one of my favorite Trey moments ever.. total zone, total flow, total dominance..I’ve probably listened to this and NYE 93 Reba more than anything ever in my entire life…. Fuckin Trey
This particular beanie looks really funny on Trey. For whatever reason, it looks like he has no hair under said beanie. So it looks like he has a shaved head, and is wearing a do-rag. 😆
Never missed a Spectrum show. The quality of the video is EXACTLY how it looked to me in person too. The shows were darker and more mysterious back then. Can’t believe how far they’ve come and what they’ve EVOLVED into in 2024. Still the GOAT live musical act in the business and still flying under the radar for the most part. I miss the Spectrum more than any venue in the country. Was my “home field”. Can’t believe they skipped Philly for Summer tour ‘24 and that there is NO Fall tour!? Might be a sign that the end of an unbelievable 30+ years of live music is coming to a close.
This may be the most heavenly sounding isolated guitar tracks ever played by a human being. The chord harmonica and range of the guitar sounds like it has the bass depth of a piano. Then the sustained lead is so elegantly played, it’s brilliant, phenomenal, awesome, and totally unique to the sound and style only Trey himself can do. Trey invented a new personal guitar tone that is very incredible considering how many millions of people have played guitar. It’s not just his tone though, his style of picking is so unique as well. He brings in a lot of refined technical abilities but combines different styles together all in one passage. He pulls in country, jazz, blues rock, classical, RnB, and Bluegrass, and can put all these styles together in one single measure and passage. It seems like a book can be written about breaking down Trey Anastasio’s playing, guitar sound, and his evolution of his play style and sound in his career.
I got mugged by 12 dudes that night. I lost everything on me of any value. Finally got courage to look for the dudes and i found them on the back side of the centrum robbing an older couple in there mid 20s. I just yelled you robbed me. They backed off the couple and came to kick my ass. I got punched a little but i moved quick so i was able to avoid a lot. Finally people started migrating toward us yelling for the cops. I just pointed to the gangsters as what seemed to be about 20 giant cops. The cops just slammed most of them and i think saved me from getting stabbed. Turns out i was the 7th person held up by these cats and they were attempting their 8th and 9th targets. Cops felt bad about me losing all my money. So they brought me into the show and gave me an open seat in the second row. This show was sick too.
