oh beard harvey is FAR superior to mustache, though i think part of the reason for harvey having a mustache was for hygienic reasons. like the dev team were really love with him have facial hair, but in a lot of the medical field, a lot of doctors are required to stay clean shaven. maybe that's why harvey wanted to be a country doctor? also, something i kinda wish stardew had implemented was that some of the bachelor/-ette characters aren't actually marriable--at least, not immediately. i kinda wish characters like seb, alex, maru, penny, and maybe emily and shane would go to uni, essentially, and you kinda date them LD, but you can visit them via bus. granted, this is total fanficcy, wishful thinking, but i think it would have given them a bit more to do (like some of them end up taking classes that you wouldn't expect from them, but loops back around to their initial hobbies/interests/jobs; whereas others have seemingly unfortunate things happen to them but end up taking them as learning experiences and end up pulling a bit of a 180 from where their characters started), and a bit more in the way of personal growth. like, with seb, it'd be so cool/sweet if he took some kind of wood and metal working shop class as well as his comp sci major, both to learn how to build his own computer, but also as a way to finally reconnect with his mom in a way (and then anytime you go see robin, there's all these little wood sculptures seb sends her, and then it culminates with him making her one of those custom wooden computer setups). meanwhile, i imagine alex would get into uni through gridball, but maybe he gets injured in a way that halts his sports dreams, but then weirdly puts him in position to go into sports medicine and nursing, and he's the one who actually ends up working with harvey as a nurse. like i said, fanficcy, but i think it would be a nice addition

I love the idea of Danny's parents streaming and recording a bunch of their stuff, it would make him hiding things so much harder for him since he'd have to worry about the people watching the videos/streams as well from figuring it out and I'd actually imagine Vlad watching and using it against Danny.

I'm glad you clarified that by "likeable" you meant "interesting". I have plenty of villain characters who are absolutely HATEABLE since they're on the morally opposing side from the character we're meant to root for. But I suppose they can be likeable in the way of "their motivations or backstory that makes them this evil are interesting and make me wanna keep reading" or having some type of "iconic villain charm" in their personalities. Some examples: Lahna - a preppy popular queen bee mean girl stereotype on the surface, but secretly harbours a LOT of anxiety and parent-induced perfectionism and fear of failure. It causes her to hold everyone else and herself to insane standards, lash out when others don't live up to them, and attempt to double down on her facade of being perfect when she herself falters, because her social life will snowball out of control if she lets the mask slip like sharks smelling blood in the water. Mike - the definition of the Dunning-Kreuger effect. He's so unbelievably dense and infuriating to try to convince that he isn't the most perfect smartest hottest being in the world, that it's just comical. He's a horrible person who disrespects others but he believes he's the best and everyone loves him and therefore they're just joking or "being a tsundere" when they tell him quite directly to stop, that's how stupid this guy is. As a person, he's infuriating, but as a character, the absolute undeserved confidence he says his pervy oneliners with can be hilarious, in a "laughing at him not with him" way. Harbinx - They're a literal god living and working in a society comprised of gods. (You remember Quaisealan with the water hair you drew? They're one of the trainees Harbinx is in charge of disciplining.) Harbinx is the god of pain, suffering, torture, and punishment, meaning that was the area of powers they were born good at, and while each god is able to gain skills and powers other than their innate one during training, the whole reason Harbinx is an enforcer instead of running a universe like the training qualifies one to do, is because they failed their training over and over until they gave up and accepted the Elder Gods' offer to work alongside the professor-like gods as a rule enforcer. They never quite mastered the delicate balance of skills it took to create, direct, and maintain a universe with sustainable life, but they were always good at scaring and threatening others. Their innate power gave them a vicious anger control problem, which in turn caused all their mortal creations to die, hence their failure to graduate.... but the Elder Gods needed someone to help keep the young trainees in line with the god society's beliefs and rules, and Harbinx's anger could not harm a fellow god, only intimidate them into obedience, so their innate power was both their downfall and the saviour of their career. Also, in the society the elders had built, many of the rules, beliefs, and customs only even came to be due to a giant misunderstanding when the elders appeared before the beginning of the Multiverse. So in my stories, not even gods are perfect.

Just found you from a random recommendation and I love your stills! Very well drawn! I’ll comment in a bit after I finish the video…
@thelingeringartist
@thelingeringartist 4 месяца назад
I agree with a lot of these points!!! I tend to try and write characters not from a morally right/wrong perspective, but more so from a human perspective. I also tend to write characters in a way where they just have baseline traits, and these traits can lean from being both a pro and a con for their person. Similarly to how you talked about flaws; I will make a character stubborn… which means they’ll probably stand their ground when needed, but also can be very hard to change their mind from other characters’ perspective. I find that focusing on the personality traits first and then skewing the negatives/cons of such a trait to make for a rounded character is overall much easier and often times more realistic and believable than… trying to give a bunch of random negative traits. I also find that giving them niche passions and hobbies helps, too. But I try not to assign a moral law on them because I find that when I write stories (esp horror ones) that it can fluctuate. And I think labeling humans by moral standards is kind of odd when all humans make mistakes and are capable of being immoral.
@thelexiconne
@thelexiconne 4 месяца назад
Very good points!! I do agree. I think this is kind of what I tried to say, but you're right now that I'm looking back at it, I started at the point of "what is a character flaw" and tried to build from there since it's a very common piece of advice and that gave it sort of a morality overtone (the Light comparison couldn't have helped either 😂) Very well said! 🖤 Thank you for commenting!

Every time I watch videos like these I am forced to come to terms with the fact that my oc is very poorly written 🥲 (The one you drew by the way!!! I'm still so giddy about that :D) I'd like to say that she's at least interesting but I may just be delusional 😭 She is entirely self indulgent after all, which is fine since I only ever use her for those purposes but it may become an issue as all stories I ever think about feature her front and center... On a side note, I'm really loving your newer artstyle! That may just be because I'm partial to more painterly styles though lol. I especially like that first drawing, those ghosts are HAUNTING which is honestly quite perfect for ghosts, and the lighting is killer I feel like I need to say something to end off this comment, so keep up the good work!
@thelexiconne
@thelexiconne 4 месяца назад
Aww thank you so much!! I'm just experimenting lol but I've always loved painterly stuff so trying to incorporate that with my lineart style has been,, challenging And I'm sure she's not nearly as poorly-written as you think! We tend to be our own worst critics. Worst comes to worst, you just do your best and get some proofreaders to help you out if you wanna make it serious-- and like I said, if she's just a self-indulgent fun OC baby, she can be whatever she wants to be! Her only purpose is to make you happy 🖤🖤 Thank you for watching and commenting!!

I absolutely adore having characters who are on two sides of a spectrum, and then characters who are stuck in the middle of it. I use this as a basis for character motivations and as a headway into their flaws. For my Warrior Cats OCs, the main spectrum here is Chaos vs Order. The Villainous Serpentcry is the furthest on the order side, as they just want control over all of Jungleclan due to the fact that they were uncontrollably bullied in their youth, while another Villain, Purplewillow, is the furthest on the Chaos side, as his only goal is to keep himself alive and he's willing to murder anybody who gets in his way of immortality. Duskleaf finds themselves right in the middle, as they really just want to live and not change anything. Then there are characters like Thistlespark, who somehow lean both ways to the extreme because he wants control just so he can plunge everything into exciting chaos to try and prove himself. For my Splatoon OCs, the main spectrum here is the morality of if or if not Salmonids (one of the many fictional in universe races) should be respected. Novel (who is ironically a self insert) finds herself all the way on the yes side, as she is a hardcore Salmonid Rights Activist which stems from her strong sense of justice and the fact that her adoptive parents are both Salmonids. Coral is all the way on the no side, as he believes that Salmonids are freaks of nature and should be killed off due to their violent nature and that they took away his best friend, Lee. Since in this timeline, Novel and Coral actively go against each other, they somehow both turn out to be reckless and violent due to their more extreme beliefs. Characters like Sterling and Zerkylie just want to live and not care, because they don't have goals that relate to the conflict between Novel and Coral, while characters like Cindy, Lysa, and Doug find themselves torn between their loyalty to Coral's mission and their morals about killing a race because they are part of a certain race. Yeah I don't know what I'm talking about but I like to use spectrums. Loving the art you have in this video. I always love the way you render characters.

Luckily I was able to pump the brakes on writing, despite my family's insistence, but they did encourage me to get very serious very fast about my photography. Granted, I was partially responsible. I had expressed a desire to have proper studio lighting and a decent DSLR to start a pet photography business. But when my parents did start buying me that stuff (a lot of it inappropriate for a pet photo studio), they started treating my photography business as an investment and I started thinking I had to become a great photographer and go on to work for National Geographic or Animal Planet to make it all worth it. All that pressure made me crash and burn and I just recently started doing photography for fun again. I'm still not sure where exactly it will fit into my life. And it took writing down with it because that was another passion that got tied into the desire to make money. It's all a mess, all because at 14 I had lofty dreams that my parents were a little too invested in. This is such an important lesson to learn before it's too late.
@thelexiconne
@thelexiconne 4 месяца назад
YESSS I have two friends whose families treated their writing the same way-- their and my experience was the whole reason I made this video. It might not be a fun lesson to learn but it's an important one. I hope you can learn to love your passions and take joy in them just like you used to, and--only if you feel inclined!--do something really cool with it. Best of luck, friend! 🖤

I don't know if I was just unlucky, but I also took the fanfiction route early on in my writing journey and never got any feedback from an audience. Every time I posted a story, within the first two chapters, I get a comment or two, and after that, radio silence. I will say, though, I don't regret making those fanfics, but I do wish that I could've had more feedback. Nowadays I feel insecure with my writing because every time I post it, no one reads it :') But hey, at least I now know how to maintain a writing schedule and never giving up on any story I write.
@thelexiconne
@thelexiconne 4 месяца назад
I'm so sorry to hear that!! Yeah sometimes it can be rough out there especially for the older or smaller fandoms 🥲 but hey, that's still practice you got in and hours you spent trying things out to see what worked! But I totally get the insecurity part--it's like pulling teeth to get anyone to read what I write that isn't fandom-related, and if that doesn't hit you right in the gut nothing will lol. Keep going, friend!! Keep building those skills and don't give up! And join a writing critique group if you feel like it-- those have been a huge help to me over the years :)

i found a similar correlation to this! that ceos in their 40’s-50’s are a lot more successful than their younger peers because of all the experience and knowledge they’ve gained, and the fact that their peers are at risk of falling off and burning out

Gosh, that part about being exceedingly good with words for a kid of that age and having a (probably) special interest in writing stories but being terrible at maths.... me too 😭 i feel so called out by that in a good way haha. I could already read before kindergarten and I straight up did not know that was abnormal? You're telling me most of my classmates didn't know what the letters were? I don't remember ever being taught the alphabet whether in school or at home so I just assumed most kids just picked it up naturally like i did. Anyway yeah I wrote stories since before I could write. I still have lil homemade "books" that my beloved grandma stapled or sewed together from paper she filled with the nonsensical fictional ramblings that 3 year old me dictated to her to write down. In my primary school years I continued writing short stories about original characters, and in high school I was writing things tens of thousands of words long, that each took me months on and off with writer's block, but I loved doing it because it was simultaneously an escape from my life and a way to vent about it. I had been quoted saying it was the only thing "keeping me sane". I actually never got into fanfiction until I was a lot older; I didn't even know it was a thing, but if I did, I probably would have preferred original writing anyway because I very rarely get as attached to characters in existing media as I do to my OCs, who I still have all of and treasure dearly. I plan to one day rewrite almost all of my teenhood stories as part of my current 30+ story multiverse with expansive interconnected lore. I have a 5k+ pixel wide flowchart-in-progress that shows which stories are part of which universe and how they're connected to others. And yes, there's magic in some of them. I never published my stories anywhere, only showed them to those I trust, including a writing mentor I got set up with who had her own published series. She gave me some good feedback, but in hindsight she was very behind the times with other things. I had a whole story focused around s1utshaming tf out of girls who wore revealing clothes and a main character who was Not Like Other Girls™️ projecting her own fears onto others and spouting this toxic antifeminist bs that I thought WAS helping women "protect themselves" 🙄 and this MC basically ended up changing the opinion of the whole world within like, a week?? and it was really bad and toxic lmao.... my mentor never told me hey maybe it's a bad idea to shame women for what they wear, it was just basic stuff like how to word things more natural sounding.... which wasn't even accurate some of the time bc this lady was in her 40s or something and thought she knew how teenagers spoke (and texted), well in hindsight the corrections she gave me were so cringe and reeked of "how do you do fellow kids". but yeah. i read and wrote a lot. not so much anymore but i wanna get back into writing my lore down!!
