As much as I am a rugby league fan the super league competition in 1997 doesn’t count because it was a rebel league made for all the wrong reasons money and disloyalty.
Yep, except the highest paid team in history of rugby league was the 1997 parramatta eels. And turning a sport genuinely professional and profitable is hardly a wrong reason. Plus aside from many every premier for the decade prior played super league so the ARL was the cheap model league.
For someone born in South Australia and has lived most of his life in Victoria, was this match and many others from the 1998 NRL season televised for South Australian, Victorian, Western Australian and even Tasmanian viewers.??..?..
2007 was when the dark ages for the Newcastle Knights truly began following Joey’s retirement followed by a terrible decade of the 2010s after getting three wooden spoons between 2015-17, until Kalyn Ponga came along in 2018 and in 2023 when the Knights were showing forms of competitiveness again. (Outside of making the preliminary final in 2013 of course) let’s hope my comment ages well.
The Roosters made one change to their starting lineup for this game and that is Craig Wing will start the game on the bench cause he played in Friday’s Test match with Australia so Stuart Webb will come off the bench into the Starting Hooker.
The Roosters coming this game in 10th position with 3 wins and 3 losses so far in season 2005. The Roosters won their first two games against Rabbitohs and the Panthers Respectively before losing 3 games in row to the Broncos, West Tigers and the Raiders respectively before they bounced back in round 6 when the Roosters beat the Bulldogs 29-16 at Telstra Stadium. While the Roosters opponents The Dragons are under enormous pressure and they are sitting in 14th position coming into this ANZAC Day game and it’s must win for The Dragons. They’ve lost their first 4 games in a row against the defending champions The Bulldogs, The Storm, The Panthers and the Raiders respectively until they finally secure their first win in season 2005 was Against Manly Sea Eagles at WIN Stadium in Wollongong where the Dragons beat the Sea Eagles 32-6 before they lost to the Brisbane Broncos 34-24 in round 6
You know I keep watching these games from 1999 and at the time everyone was saying Alfie was so badly out of form that he retired. I’ll be honest, while obviously not at his devastating best, he was still playing well. At least comparable to peak Noel goldthorpe.
1:28:09 There is no doubt the Parramatta Eels produced their biggest win and their Highest Ever Score in the Club’s History. 66-12 it’s finished with the Eels ran in 11 Tries to 2 with Jason Moodie, Brett Hudgson, David Solomona and Eels Captain Nathan Cayless each scored Two tries, with Daniel Wagon, Jason Taylor and Scott Donald each shared the spoils with a tries each, Jason Taylor did not miss with the boot with 11 goals to 11. A Dominant victory for The Parramatta Eels.
The Raiders were a shell of their former selves by 1998, as were Manly. Hard to believe that those two sides were so fierce and dominant only 3 years earlier.
LOL at 1 hour 16 min mark blocker talking about the eels playing the broncos the next week with a 18-2 with 11 to go you would think so.... and the 'who care who wins' before the game they can't beat Brisbane anyway.. all so true underrated moment no on emanations John Simon missed a FG with 6 to go to take it to 19-6
Manly came in hot as hell into this game winning and were pathetic and didn't turn up 11 out of 12 they had won. and the next year was 15 out of 16 and did the same thing and were pathetic against the Broncos. they really did blow a lot of comps in the mid 90s were so dominate but only had 1996
Dude, you have no idea about 90's rugby league. Raiders always lost without Ricky in the side. He was the reigning Daly M player of '93 & the Raiders got Smashed every game after he was injured. If you took Alfie out of the Broncos this match & added Ricky to the Raiders then the Broncos get pumped. As was the extreme importance of both origin halves to their respective Champion sides.
@@eddielasowsky7777 You can laugh all you want. The proof is in the results. Raiders couldn't win without Ricky. Why they lost '91 Grand Final. He could hardly run or kick in '91 GF. No Ricky, No Raiders. Simples
