At 1:22, you refer to the Constitution escaping the larger number of British warships through rowboats and its anchor. Am I correct in calling this process "kedging"?

I’m not sure, but did you forget to name the commander of the NC-4 on it’s historic flight? It was LCDR Albert Cushing Read. You, ten people in my family are directly and indirectly name after that Navy Pilot. When my Dad was born in 1920, he was named after the then famous Naval Aviator: Read Leon Bronson. However, as a kid, Dad was bullied a lot….”Can you read, Read?” So Dad simply changed the spelling of his name to Reid. Not legally, of course. Mom loved the name so all four sons were named Reid: James Reid, Thomas Reid, Gerald Reid, and Reid Thomas. I’m Reid Thomas. Yes my name is reverse of Thomas Reid. You see Gerald and Thomas were twins who died at birth. They’re buried at the National Cemetery at Pensacola. I have three nephews named Reid. Two of them first named Reid. One middle named Reid. My son is Reid Charles. His daughter is Collins Reid, the only girl of the ten. What’s really great was my Dad’s career in Navy Aviation. Just before the Japanese raid on Pearl Harbor, Dad enlisted and soon became a flight engineer on a Catalina at Dutch Harbor. When his Cat went down during the Battle of Dutch Harbor, he spent three days in a life raft. After recovering from exposure at the base hospital, Dad received 30 days Survivors’ Leave. He used his leave to get married to Mom back in Chicago. Then back to the war. What a generation. Because he was a fairly good flight engineer, we was stationed at Pensacola to train more flight engineers. Eventually he made Lieutenant. After retirement, he went to work for McDonnell Aircraft building the F-4 and F-15. Like A. C. Read, Dad was a real Navy Aviation man. Now my son also follows in A. C. Read’s footsteps. Sort of. Reid attended the Summer Program at Annapolis but found he was not the Navy type. Instead, he received aerospace degrees from Michigan and Washington U. in St. Louis. He went to work building modern versions of the F-18 and F-15. Later, the V-22. Today he’s on the team building new the B-21 for the Air Force. Our family has 10 Read/Reids. Two of them with careers in Aviation. And, my brother James Reid was a career Army Officer serving in Vietnam and Europe. Anyway, if you ever redo this video, my extended family would appreciate you showing a bit more love to the man who flew NC-4 across the Atlantic. LCDR Albert Cushing Read. By the way…really enjoyed the video. And yes, family get togethers we’re always a bit confusing with 5 first name Read/Reids in attendance. Reid Thomas Bronson

Tragedy that it took that long for them to reclaimed his body back to the U.S. It was a greater tragedy and incredibly ridiculous they gave ships to worthless men over him because of their birth. Those men names aren’t even acknowledged in history, but John Paul Jones name alone out of that time is credited for honor and remembrance as the Father of the U.S. Navy!

Nine boys and one girl in my family are named after the commander of NC-4, A. C. Read. The year after the historic flight my Dad was born. Grandparents gave him Read as a first name. Well, in school he was bullied because of the name. “Can you read, Read?” So on his own, he started spelling it, REID. My three older brothers have Reid as a middle name. Then, I was given Reid as a first name. My son’s first name is Reid. My granddaughter’s middle name is Reid. I also have three nephews named Reid. Two first names. One middle name. All because of Lt. CDR. Albert Cushing Read. Thanks Al. Oh, my Dad who started it all…guess what did he for a living. Navy Aviation. Started as the Flight Engineer on a Catalina at Dutch Harbor during WW2. Made it a career. 27 years. Then, 20 years at McDonnell Douglas building F-4s and F-15s. My son…Aerospace Engineer with Boeing building F-18s, F-15s and V-22 Ospreys. Today, with Northrop Grumman building the B-21 Raider. I’ve always wondered if A. C. Read had something to do with my Dad’s and my Son’s careers. Just a crazy thought. Anyway, thanks again Al. Reid.

The masts usually sat where the sea water could wash around the bottom of the masts. Sailors used to say it was lucky to put a penny( copper coin) under the mast. In the step. The sea water had a chemical reaction with the penny. And made a substance that killed the spores that caused the bottom of the mast to rot. Nowadays people seem to think it better to replace the copper coin for a silver one. Breaking tradition.
