That moment when you stay with your special friend holding hands on the couch and you realize how small and insignificant we are as humans and yet powerful enough to fall in love to the sky and back❤

No words can accurately describe this amazing wonder. Been star gazing before but this blows it away by billions of miles. Would love to go again.

A few explanations of what is seen: 0:23 and thereabouts - Cerro Paranal in Chile, home to some of the European Southern Observatory's telescopes, view from the platform that hosts four 8m telescopes 1:28 - the reddish vertical line is from the adaptive optics system laser; the laser creates an artificial star in the sky where the observations are to be made; adaptive optics compensates for the movement of the atmosphere and helps to obtain less blurry images; in the same shot, the horizontal line is an airplane - traffic throughout Chile passes over Paranal and at night there are many flights from Santiago to Lima or to the States and back. Another plane is seen to the right at 3:04-3:05. 1:33 - a close-up look at the lasers; in the upper left corner is the Large Magellanic Cloud, a small galaxy near the Milky Way that is unfortunately only visible from the southern hemisphere 2:19 - “small” 1.8m telescopes that are used for interferometric observations 2:36 - both the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds are visible on the left 3:20 - long exposure clearly showing where the South Celestial Pole is 3:40 and around - the shadow of the mountain is seen on the cloud layer, which is lower than Paranal; the peak is about 2,650 m above sea level, the clouds are lower most of the time - one of the reasons why this place was chosen for the observatory; something similar is often seen on Mauna Kea, where there is also a large observatory 3:49 - Moon, Venus and possibly Jupiter set over Paranal; it was photographed from another peak in the Andes further east of the observatory 4:01 - the Magellanic Clouds again 4:10-4:16 - low above the horizon, the clouds are visible and in particular their layered nature - how they are formed by "threads"; at this point it is almost certain that there are thin clouds above the observatory itself, but they are too thin to be seen and only near the horizon, where we see them near the rabbinate, but the clouds themselves are more noticeable 4:21 - the white lines below are from cars; even at night (and especially at night!) the observatory is driven to the observatory so as not to interfere with the observations, but along the way there are small lighting fixtures that mark its boundaries, and even after 102 nights a year, one learns these three kilometers by heart 4:36 - example of a close-up shot (on the tent in the foreground) - that's why the stars look like „pancakes“ 4:40-4:42 - the white vertical glow after sunset that crosses the Milky way is dust in the developed planets that glows with reflected light; it is best seen a little after sunset or just before sunrise and is called the Zodiacal light; in the foreground, lower right, you can see the cars going through the penultimate bend before the top - the road down leads to the „settlement“, in which are the residence (actually a dormitory), a canteen, various workshops, fuel tanks, etc.

I can’t believe this exists. Really is a shame a lot of the world is covered by light pollution. I’ve only seen something kind of similar to this once in upstate New York, not to this extent tho. It is life changing.

Sleeping in the outdoor at night and wake up in the middle of it, I am Absorbed into the Firmament , that is the best feeling in the world, jumping in the stars and feeling part of all that creation, i am sure it s been a natural thing for millenniums for people and animals.

No its not Andromeda at 3:02 it's the galaxies which are orbiting our own galaxy and they are called Small and Large Magellanic Clouds

This is b.s. and you are taking film from the ESO and tainting it. . There is a reason why they never spin the stars and thats because you cant spin stars that are leaving or arcing because of the milky ways thats causing the stars to arc near the horizon.

It's good enough with just leaving the city and reach some place with no artificial lights (or no lights at all) nearby, that's enough to be able to see the Milky Way, but it's true that there's no better place on Earth for doing that than the Atacama Desert, Chile, that's why most of humanity's telescopes are located there
