The Wits School of Geosciences is the the largest and most diverse academic Earth Science institution in Africa, with courses in Geology, Geochemistry, Geophysics, Palaeontology, Palaeoanthropology, Geochronology, Environmental Science, Atmospheric Science, Hydrogeology, Economic Geology, and Exploration and Mining Geoscience. In many of these fields, Wits is the main (and in some cases, sole) centre of study in Africa and South Africa.
This channel was started on the landmark 110th anniversary of the School's founding and will document all the birthday celebrations in 2014 as well as the weekly Geotalks which form an important part of the School's calendar.
Hoes does water content change the amount of heat Flux or needed magma generation to produce mobile magma columns? Wouldn't areas w higher water content require less heat influx than say a dry system?
Very interesting! How long did it take those two employees to do the mag susc logging and how long to enter it all into a spreadsheet? What method was used for density measurements and were those values grain or bulk density values?
It is so sad for Morris‘ passing. He was one of the greatest geologists in South Africa and the world, and a great man in personality. I had been so lucky to work under and interact with him for the last 29 years in South Africa. I and my family send our condolences to the whole Viljoen family!
While the history of the komatiite discovery was interesting, the talk on how komatiites can be a source or at least a vector towards gold mineralisation in the Witwatersrand is fascinating. Thank you!
I support the idea that the Bushveld complex is connected. When we think about the similar layering found in the East and West limb it supports the idea that it was formed as a connected stratified layer.
