The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing helps families, health care providers and education professionals understand childhood hearing loss and the importance of early diagnosis and intervention. Through advocacy, education, research and financial aid, AG Bell helps to ensure that every child and adult with hearing loss has the opportunity to listen, talk and thrive in mainstream society.
That Bruce Goldstein guy is a god damn saint! Those two parents were absolute morons. Anything Goldstein said was twisted to fit their narrative that he was not trying to help.
... an advocate who'll listen to these school representatives! They want him to be in a general education classroom for socialization skills, and that's EXACTLY what they're offering at "the Kennedy school," with special assistance in the afternoons for students who are deaf or have hearing loss.
Both parties have gone into the meeting with their own agenda. The student is not present because he/she is a under 16 years of age. The parents clearly do not want to send their child to a school where he/she might not be in a mainstream class, they have not taken the time to visit and observe if that setting would be beneficial to the student. The school/Board on the other hand keep insisting that they know whats best for the student and are unwilling to look at the possibility of extra therapy sessions or an aide for the student - in a main stream setting.
I am insulted that they think deaf or hard of hearing do not socialize in a normal way. That you have to be "hearing" to accomplish this. Deaf have their own culture and it is just as normal as anyone else, just different.
let me tell you a secret about this whole special education system they would not care about you after you graduate from high school and after Utah on the age of 21 I have been in the special ed system for 15 years from 2002 all the way from 2014 and I stayed eight more years in high school I didn't learn anything in special education system the teachers and the students will both make a fun of me all the care about is the money I will get in trouble after I get bullied by the jocks when I stand up for myself in trouble I am 23years old and I have been home now Siri Siri years and a half with no education no job I went back to my high school I spoke to my special ed teacher they blocked me on facebook I went back to the school and tell them my teachers blocked me on facebook and I told them I've been home now for three years and the pussy ball told me that's not a problem I seriously don't know what to do now in life I have a social worker Who is not doing anything for me and I was born with mental health issue this is what happen when you're not smart and you're not famous in high school this is what happens when you're an outcast in high I blame 85% of my problems at my special ed teachers they seriously didn't care about me in high school and they were telling lies about me to my family I blame them for everything
mental illness is not necessarily covered under IDEA........Sorry you are going through all that but probably a therapist at your stage in life would be more helpful than returning to your old HS teachers and bitching
An excellent representation of an ideal IEP meeting, where both sides are part of the exchange and decision making process. Unfortunately, lack of funds, availability of key administrators and staff familiar with the student, and SLP's, many of the meetings are run by people unfamiliar with the child (even though case manager) that they are barely legal. It has become a meeting where representatives state their piece in a round robin forum and ask, "Parents, any questions?" Not the intent of the IEP, in my opinion.
Our school runs the same type of meetings. Meetings not only include the IEP people but also teachers the student has and has had, an unrelated IEP person, an administrator and a grade level coordinator who explains the meeting to the grade level. All avenues are explored..
I did exactly this at my little one's IEP & provided test scores showing the need for a 3rd speech therapy session. No luck. I felt it wasn't taken seriously & fully considered. They mentioned that she should get a new audio gram. What did they have to do with her getting more speech? I also showed speech testing as well as an updated neuro psych in support of more speech therapy.
Lexington Sc, and Columbia sc violates the IEP and 405 plan... A lot of children ended up in juvenile facilities bc of that. The court has no tolerance for anyone with a disability. That state should be investigated.
It is a good example, we, as instructors, can share it in the classrooms. Was the video cut off at the 7.05 mark? There doesn't seem to be a concluding remark by any one of the characters. Thanks for this fine video!!

Least Restrictive Environment is the law. And teachers should be trained to work with kids with disabilities. Independent assessments must be considered, but they do have to be provided to the school for consideration. The parents aren't backing up their reasons for 3x weekly sessions. The school isn't asking any questions at all - only restating their position over and over. The parents aren't either, but LRE is the law and on their side.
I don't have hearing aids BUT I can still speak very well and read lips. I have no problem making friends... deaf AND hearing friends. I belong in both worlds. As much as hearing aids might appear great... We don't really need them. I accept my deafness and I thank God everyday for making me this way. Just keep that in the mind... no hearing aids doesn't mean your life is over. I am a junior majoring in theatre arts, president of my organization, sister of my sorority, cheerleader & more.
