Hi, I'm Lance, and this channel is all about painting landscapes and seascapes in oil.
Throughout the channel, you'll be able to find techniques and tutorials I've developed over the past thirty years. As a self-taught artist, I know that, with enough patience and persistence, anyone can reach their desired goal.
If you enjoy the content, consider subscribing and let's paint God's creation one canvas at a time.
It looks very good, especially the background. The foliage of the conifers and deciduous trees somehow looks too similar. Maybe the tree in the front should look more extraordinary like a 1200-year-old oak tree?
Thank you. I'm definitely going to revisit the area once the foreground is complete. I've contemplated your exact thoughts but didn't wanna press my luck the last go around. Lol
ABSOLUTELY HELPED IT! I FIND MY SELF DOING THIS ALL THE TIME...ON PURPOSE. I PAINTING THE EXACT COLORS AND VALUES THEN I PUSH IT BACK WITH THIS TECHNIQUE. IVE DONE IT IN QUITE A FEW OF MY PAINTINGS LIKE MOUNTAINS AND VALLEYS, AND DONE IT IN A GRAND CANYON PAINTING AND IT CAME OUT GREAT! THANKS.
Thanks for the feedback. It's such a simple technique, but I'm always worried that it'll look too muddy. Applying a few highlights after seemed to clean it up, though.
2:50 pause and look at the underpainting- colors- too dark- especially for atmosphere- depth- blues- violets in background- and use compliment for underpainting such as green- like a sienna- orange with red and such- in foreground-
Think the background should of used blues- violets- even for the underpainting- rather than the darks- The mid- big tree needs shaping- And the left big tree also needs shaping- Overall- the use of such darks in the underpainting- has a cause and effect- Under the mountain- the line of trees- adds too much of horizontal lines-- The colors were off here throughout the overall piece- just feedback-- Also- have a look at the mid big tree- the overall shape of - can see a big ole face- Having pareidolia- I see this a lot in many landscapes-- on RU-vid- painting channels- I’ve been deleted and blocked for giving my feedback- paint with Kevin - is one that blocked me- after following him from the very beginning in 2012!!! For this reason-- Painters should take others feedback- In the end- you could of shown the final piece- ended too abruptly- Your seascapes- ocean pieces are amazing!!
Thank you for your feedback. Some of the areas you mentioned will be addressed before the scene is complete. I'm not sure if I didn't make it clear, but I'm still working the scene, so there's still work to be done. 😀
I'm hoping the other videos on your channel will hav eyou explaining your selection of paints and mixing of colors, color choices, brand of paint recommendations. It may be difficultt o instruct while concnetrating on painting and , if that is the case, consider painting while filiming as here , then doa complete oice over. Anyhow, I defintely liove the end results of your work! :)
Thanks for your suggestion. I think you'll find a few videos on the page that go into a bit more detail on your suggestions. I am still trying to find a happy medium between over talkative, instructive, time-lapse, etc. Always appreciate the comments, as they help me build something everyone can enjoy.
Thanks, and thanks for checking it out. I'm looking forward to digging back into it. It's such a large piece that I'm thinking about making another in-depth guide on painting the water rocks. We'll see. 😀
Thank you, and thanks for watching. Typically, i try to give the reference material in most circumstances. I'm with you on liking to see it when watching others paint.
Might I suggest watching the full time-lapse video then. This one was meant to only focus on painting water, as the title implies. I've tried to release full time+lapse videos for those who just want to see it start to finish. Even started releasing two with different lengths to accommodate. If you want instructional, then their normally broken into specific topics. Hope this helps.

LANCE, THANK YOU! I CONSIDER THIS THE MOST CRUCIAL STAGE OF ANY PAINTING, ITS WHAT SET THE COMPOSITION, VALUES, AND TONES, AFTER THAT ITS JUST NOTHING BUT CREATIVE FUN FROM THERE! HAPPY CREATING SIR.
Love your videos and your style! I was a pretty good sketch artist in 8th grade but then discovered girls and beer. Now, 47 years later I am back to the Art and want to move into painting. I am guessing you are using acrylics?
It's never to late for art! The majority of my work you see here, if not all - I believe, are done in oils. I say that because I do have extensive experience with acrylics, and have only switched to oils the last 3-4 years.
Thanks for sharing, that's the technique that I use to paint water, I didn't know it was right, because I am not a professional, this video has given me clear comprehension about what I've been doing intuitively.
Thank you for checking the video out. I'm glad you were able to find value in the content. There's probably several ways to paint realism, I've always just wanted to share how I've done it. I'm always open to learning. 😀
I’m watching on subtitles as night time but will comment that music during narration is annoying and stressful so please consider no music at all.Love the picture.
Thanks for the compliment, as well as the input. I will definitely be looking into how to eliminate distracting audio in the future. That being said, I appreciate all the opinions and critiques along the way of building better content.
