This channel provides play throughs of modern sample libraries with no wordy exposition. All real-time and improvised. Other content includes music composed by me (David Coscina) using music technology.
@@alontrigger I think they are just pitch bent to be honest. I doubt any developer would go to the trouble and expense of sampling quarter tones. But I think they come off decently. Even shifting quarter tones sound okay to my ears.
@@alontrigger Thanks! These kind of playing effects have long eluded me in a notation context so I'm pretty stoked that MuseScore is opening the floor up to these mid 20th century type of techniques
Good stuff David! One question: when you wrote: "Those are the Berlin series expansion", do you mean that you used Orchestral Tools' Berlin Orchestra as a VST in MuseScore? Thx!
@@jade8538 there is curated Berlin Orch expansion for MuseScore that has been ported over from Staffpad. It’s a fraction of the memory footprint as the full blown libraries and has all articulation mappings built in. It’s currently on for $10 per orchestra choir until end of this month. No brainer. Those same expansions cost me $140 each for Staffpad in 2020.
@@soundtreks Wow! I'd not heard of this ... where can I find the Berlin Orch expansion pack you speak of? Do you have a link for it? (I Googled it but nothing comes up ??) Thx!
@@winknotes thanks Steve! I will likely return to my Yokai piece since I have the most ideas for that but this was a nice tonal distraction. I’ve had this concept and figure in my head for some years now and I wanted to get it out.
A very cool sketch David! I love the percussive 'motor' you establish in the piece. A quick question (or clarification) re the sounds: did you simply load in Spitfire strings, Berlin Brass/Winds and CinePerc samples as VSTs into MuseScore (MS)? I ask because I too use MS and have tried loading Spitfire's BBC Symph. Orch. (BBCSO) into MS as a VST, but upon playback I've encountered wild inconsistencies with articulations and dynamics. Have you run into any of those issues? Thx!
Thanks Jade! Yes, MuseScore playback requires a fair bit of taming and even still, I have to make compositional choices that I normally wouldn't if I were working in Dorico with NotePerformer. But I like the sonic splendour that MS 4 offers, especially in cases where it's not assured I will get my music played by an orchestra. I have the sound expansions for these libraries offered via MuseHub rather than using the full libraries from Kontakt, SINE, or MUSIO. The benefit of the bespoke editions is that they are all pre mapped. Just plop notes in, articulations and dynamics and you are set. :)
@@soundtreks Thx for the info! So, just to be clear -- it sounds like you used a combination of MS 4's 'MuseSounds', in addition to loading in Spitfire strings, Berlin Brass/Winds and CinePerc samples as VSTs for certain instruments. Is that correct?
This sounds really good (orchestration and playback). I'm looking at Musescore too but I'm getting pretty fast with Dorico so there's not much friction when it comes to composing. However to have StaffPad type playback would be quite satisfying as I'm writing.
I love Dorico Pro and use it for all my commissions. I rely on NotePerformer because it provides the best preview of proper orchestra balance. My last piece sounded very close to the NP mock up which tells me it is doing something right. I use MuseScore Studio and its sounds mostly for this kind of writing because it's what I like to compose and I haven't found an easy way of attaining these sounds in Dorico even with NPPE. But MS is slower to move around on than Dorico and I don't see that changing anytime soon. I tend to write pieces in MuseScore that I don't think I will get a live performance so I want better mock up/performance. If any of my pieces were to be requested to be performed, they would be imported into Dorico for engraving.
@@GlennScottLacey nope I just put the quarter tone accidental in and MuseScore does the rest. I find using a slur sometimes helps make it smoother. I also like the gliss/port playback on the bones. Those are the Berlin series expansion. The Musetrombones don’t glide nicely. But they do play back several jazz arts
One thing I noticed is that Noteperformer's attack at the beginning of each measure is more 'in sync' and executed crisply. Also, NP's execution of the steadily increasing dynamics was quite musical.
Hi David my name is Sharon I am a big fan of Godzilla minus one and i have done a lot of work on the book the record of Godzilla minus one I have done a folder a bout the book you have got I have been looking for a picture book and this was the one thank you from British Godzilla fan!
Not bad. The hat accent didn't sound right to me. It's usually a very short note but didn't sound like it in this example. Anyway like the chord voicings too.
And how much would it cost in English money I am crying because, I have found all the information I need will the book come over to the uk?Please I Have wipe tears of joy please make my dream come true!
I would love an English translation version of this book please please please! I have been looking for books o f Godzilla minus one please can the English Godzilla minus one fans have the same? Thank you English Godzilla fan?!!!
Some very usable stuff here. I've honestly not considered a library like this but could see a use for something quick to get a general idea and arrangement down. How do you use it?
What you think is most accurate? i have synvchron prime. and thinked Noteperformer but if i found way good way convert vsl syncron prime projects to correct notation i fine with it. and correct i try found what values are actually which dynamic level.when all instruments not have whole range even pitch says something its range. saddly no documentation for synchron prime which make things easer.
I think the NotePerformer sounds are the most accurate in terms of balance. Synchron has nicer sounding winds but I think the balance isn’t quite as close to the real thing.
my screen capture apps are all messed up since I moved to the Mac Mini M2 Pro. Not sure why but I'm still trying to figure out what happened. Once I do, I will get back to the playthrus. thanks for asking! :)
This was beyond pathetic. What does the Dorico Logo Signify? Where's the MuseScore Logo? Where does one start and the other end? There are 24 Bowing techniques. WTF does "I wanted to get the effect of open string strumming but MuseScore wouldn’t play back pizz strings with an arpeggio" even mean? "Seems like there is no perfect playback/performance solution just yet" Duh. Brilliant. What planet are you from, Einstein? Getting Notation / Engraving software asymptotic to a DAW environment is a long way from today. I used Musescore for 4 1/2 years. Are you reading the Issue Blogs? Musesounds (their "VST" library) blows. Strings and Winds are horrid. Anything beyond Legato is a joke. Musecore - by their own admission- had an opportunity to integrate With NotePerformer, but chose not to. HUGE mistake. Now users are directed to GitHub for playback issues. Virtually NONE are getting resolved. Just purchased Dorico 5 and NotePerformer 4. That combination blows Musescore 4.X completely out of the water. Short of DAW composing, nothing - absolutely nothing - compares.
they used this when Koichi is flying the Shinden to lure Godzilla out to sea. It's also used when he's trying to track down Tachibana. And finally, the choral statement is recapped when he flies his plane into Godzilla's mouth.
Thanks! This is the most abstract the piece will get. It’s a commission so it’s largely going to be tonal. I wanted to evoke the sense of wonder and portent in this establishing movement.
Thanks Steve. Much appreciated. For this movement no it’s just wordless choir like Ravel Daphnis et Chloe. There will be text for the other movements however.
@@charliev906 thank you for your kind comments. 🙏 the trumpet figure in the last section was inspired by Ives’ Unanswered Question but I can see how it evokes the sonorities of Adam’s’ Anfortus Wound from Harmonielehre.
Thank you! MuseSounds present some challenges with balance and dynamics. Winds are too loud and brass don’t have the same range as most other sample libraries. But I managed to wrestle them into behaving enough to convey what I wanted to musically with this piece. :)
@@soundtreksGreat work David, I enjoined listening to this composition. I have to say that the MuseSounds overall are good and I concord with the fact that there are some balance issues. Let's trust that in a future update the MuseScore team will address this balance issues among orchestral instrument families and single instruments... All the very best, MaxT
I just read other comments about their other product Phobos had issues and Spitfire didn't do any updates to fix bugs, so wondered if Polaris was the same
