I just got into pharmacy school after careful consideration between pharmacy school or medical school. I chose pharmacy because it seemed to be more balance, rewarding (financially and patient difference) and catered to my strengths. Now after watching this video I’m worried if this was the right profession to go to. I see mixed opinions on the trajectory of pharmacy. 😢

The impact of COVID and long-term/chronic symptoms in younger populations may skew the projected path of "geriatrics" medication management. I expect the demand to increase over the next decade. Also consider diabetes and its complications. Our expertise will be needed for a wider patient population.

When I am asked about pharmacy, and should my kid think about pharmacy school, I’m torn. It can be a great career. (It’s no longer a profession) Now I just tell people: If you do go into pharmacy, do something interesting. There’s plenty of things to do with a pharmD. Don’t go into retail, don’t work for a major corporation. If your employer is on wall street, they are not looking out for you and your ability to do your job adequately. They are looking to make money for the investors. It’s that simple.

There is a shortage for a reason.(shitty jobs)...pharmacists are walking out, like CVS pharmacists in Kansas City last year. Corporations screw you over and they play hard ball - they don't play softball. You are absolutely right. Corps force you to come up with the lack of profits by leaning on you. There may be a few great jobs, perhaps in clinical. Academia is lying. They also want to call a 6 year degree a "Doctor of Pharmacy" ...which is total B.S. (pure manipulation) just to sell degrees to the naive. Then they graduate and think they're really a "doctor" ..haha... I'm not gonna try and fix the system, I'm off to better and bigger things. Go to med school or get out of health care.

@@thehappypharmd as someone who works in Pharma, I think their salary ranges are not the most accurate. Most pharmacist do a post doctorate fellowship, which is about two years, and then start full-time work in their area of interest. For those first two years income are lower than what would be expected for a full-time retail pharmacist. After they get a full-time role, it should be equivalent, however, after about another two years of working, they should get promoted and they should make anywhere between 180-235k. Things only accelerate from there as more promotions equal more money Pharma is a good industry and it pays typically aligned with mid-level tech companies like IBM Dell and Adobe.

Physician suicide and burnout rates are just as high if not higher than pharmacists. Yes, they make anywhere from 25K to 50K annually more starting out. But you should pursue what you want, not what the the economy is doing or base your decision based on what you can get paid. You can make a decent living in nearly all healthcare industries.

Maybe the industry became over saturated during the 2010’s. Just a personal take but looking at the entire medical industry as a whole, it’s far overweight and bloated. Takes way too many people to achieve the simplest of results. People can’t afford to eat, then they certainly can’t afford pills to pop. ✌️

I graduated in 2016 from a newly accredited school, and for three years before graduating I spoke out about the lack of motivation nor seeing the light at the end of the tunnel (the light being a supportive job that I am happily doing my best in). However, even as a student intern I had no mentors who were willing to understand the effects of heavy and strenuous workloads, the uselessness of training leadership who were only focused on titles and beefing up their CV, and misunderstanding such competition as willingness to disregard and strive through the anxiety and depression. Maybe my school was prepping me for the real world where I will be unsupported, stressed, and depressed. Unfortunately, I was one of the 75% who were unhappy and outspoken about how my school was only concerned about meeting superb metrics and receiving more money from students. I was one of the few that left the industry all together because I "maybe couldn't handle the workload nor manage the stress" it brought. Though graduating and passing the NAPLEX, I'm still depressed about potentially not being good enough and still think about what could have been if I graduated from a different program or had mentors that understood my concerns and led me towards grassroots programs that focused on the well being of pharmacists, developing industry initiatives to lessen work-related stress, and creating a tangible network of these multiple (I'm assuming varied) positions where pharmacists are needed. Anyway, I digress, I'm out of the loop now and my whole point was that maybe programs knew the unhappiness was inevitable and ignored it for money.
