By far the best explanation and the onlyone that made some sense .. I am still confused but still i can say that I have understood the logic somewhat .. thanks a lot I still don't understand it perfectly but atleast I can confidently say that I have some headway into the logic .. If for example my ignorance in maths could be quantified somehow on a numeric scale then say my understanding was -100 and now you have removed or negated 50 percent of my ignorance so it would be something like .. -.05 times -100 = 50 ... sounds funny but thats how it seems to be.

isn't this just a long explanation for something that can be proven in a couple lines? the binary operation multiplication on Z is a group, and therefore for each a, b in z: (-x)(-y) = (-x)(-y) + 0 = (-x)(-y) + x(-y + y) = (-x + x)(-y) + xy = xy and therefore, (-x)(-y) = xy. i get that this is a more complicated approch for kids, but you're already explaining this using money, so i don't think explaining it this way is that far off. and besides, i belive that we should be teaching kids more abstract subjects instead of teaching pure arithmetics for 6 years and then spend another 6 years teaching them different things with no purpose or reason. teaching them how to prove or disprove things like an adult would be so much more intresting and could actually teach them something usefull

This is confusing to me... For (-2)x(-3), if I subtracted -2 groups from -3, you would get 3, not 6... Am I missing something? This example does not seem to work for negative integers multiplied by negative integers. The reason a negative times a negative equals a positive is because it works functionally with distributive properties, right? Because it aligns with all other math functions? SOMEONE, PLEASE HELP ME UNDERSTAND THIS!!! LOL
@ramymelhem
@ramymelhem 8 месяцев назад
-2 x -3 means your subtracting 2 groups of $3 debts, which essentially means you're paying back money. If you pay back pay back $3 twice then you've paid back $6...and not $3 as you said. In essence, your net worth has increased by $6 (ie. +6)
@OneRealChristian
@OneRealChristian 8 месяцев назад
But if we already have -3 (debt), wouldn't adding 6 be positive 3?
@ramymelhem
@ramymelhem 8 месяцев назад
@Sheenberry it depends how much debt you're in. If you're in $2000 debt and you pay off -2 x -3 then you're now in $1994 in debt. Your net worth increased by $6. The answer always refers to your change in net worth.
