That's a good session, but I reckon you should treat the salmon you are going to let go with a bit more care dragging them up the beach and letting them roll around in dry sand is a sure fire way to kill fish.
They just tell you that so it doesn’t get fished out. Also, salmon don’t live in the Derwent, they are just passing through, so they are completely fine to eat.
If you are using a heavy rod set up, just go big on weight to get as far out as possible when casting. You often hook up in close but also get hits out deep so its good to be able to cover all areas. Pretty sure this video is 5/8 weight 4/0 hook size. Its really not that important. Just don't want enormous hooks. I like a heavy plastic that sinks fast so I can retrieve fast. Salmon are extremely fast and I think sometimes a fast moving bait gets a better response. Only thing is its a harder workout for you. Mostly though I think when they are in front of you, they are not too fussy and often smash almost anything that moves.
Thanks for the video! It's stuff like this that keep me going until I move down at the end of next year! Beach fishing is what I grew up doing, but I now live too far from the coast to get more than a couple of chances each year. Once I move down I'll be 10 minutes from the nearest beach and have a river (the Huon) across the road from my front door. Can't wait! I bet the smile on the young bloke's face made that all worthwhile. It might be the one thing that gets him hooked on fishing 👍
Salmon on the soft plastics in the surf always fun and don't take much to be a legal size in Tassie at 20cm even Mullet have to be 25cm. Sweet Atlantic and nice to hand the fish off good karma for your next trip ATB.
I should have put a ruler on the last two salmon. Would have been close to 40cm I reckon. Couple fish hit and bent that heavy rod right over off camera. They would have been a good bit bigger again. I will go back there or eaglehawk soon and try to get a big one. I have caught them around the 5 lb mark in the past. They go hard like a game fish.
Great footage mate. Love surf fishing and I used to do alot in Vic and southern NSW. Since I moved To Tassie, havn't done much and would love to start up again. Also love spinning along the beaches. Fish out in boat for squid, snapper, kingies, etc and for Bream and trout in the rivers, but hopefully will get some time to catch a few cocky's and also gummies on the beaches. Cracking Atlantic, gave a decent fight. Good condition. Well done on giving it to the young family.
Terrific first up effort, mate. Your choice and volume of music is great too. Some have it way too loud. You ought to rope someone in to do a bit of camera work for you. You have a decent bonce for video, haha, and a different perspective than all POV would be a bonus. Nothing wrong with the footage you’ve got mind you. I’ve subscribed, and look forward to what’s next. Btw, I wish these cameras were around when I was bashing our local rivers! Tight lines Scott
Thanks for the constructive criticism mate. A second person to help film would be great, but its not easy to find someone willing to give up the time that takes. I do want to get a second camera and some independent audio recording would be handy. As you might notice with the cheap fishing gear I use, my funds are a bit limited. Hopefully build things up overtime and make the videos more fancy. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Very much appreciated 👍
Hey mate, I like to chase the gummy’s off Calverts beach on the full moon when I get the time to do so. Trying to figure out exactly where you are there in this video! lol Awesome work and you just made a subscriber in me!
Hi Kim that was a nice catch thank you for given us the fish we had it fresh that day on the BBQ very nice my son at the end will really be happy to see the video of him.
