Hi, I'm Dr CST the Industrial Academic... also known as Caroline! Find me at drcst.com Welcome to my channel 😀 I post a new video every MONDAY at 10am GMT.
I specialise in applied nuclear physics, using AI to advance solutions for tricky real-world problems. I love helping others advance their career and enjoyment of science. Which means I talk… on podcasts, radio, festivals, stand-up gigs, pubs, village halls, and of course the lecture theatre. I can do serious, but prefer to mix in the funny, amazing, and adventurous too.
Hi Dr CST! Many thanks for your videos. I have found them really useful! Please I need your thoughts as I am preparing for an online interview for a UK lecturer position. I was told I would give a 10-minute presentation as part of the interview and I would only be given the topic few minutes into the interview with about 45 minutes to then prepare, take a break for few minutes and then do the online presentation. How do I go about preparing for this kind of interview? Will this likely be focused on just my research (past, present and future) or I may be asked to do a microteach? I am not sure how much can be covered in 10 minutes...please what are your thoughts? I have not had an interview before without receiving the presentation topic days before the interview session. I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks, that was very interesting! I teach rather small courses, so we often start with a round of people vocalizing their current state in one word (energized, interested, tired, exhausted...). Really helps me to know what my students need that day :)
Love watching your videos, it really inspired me. How do I go about getting more classes to teach as so far I was only given one class during my journey starting out in my DBA journey?
😀 Thanks for commenting, congratulations for starting the path towards your DBA. Already getting a class is great. When I did my PhD I only taught on one class - as I wanted to balance the time between teaching and my own research. At our university the Director of Learning and Teaching organises the teaching allocation and we have a separate academic who coordinates the teaching the PostDocs do - if you have similar you could ask them about more teaching? All the best with your research.
For physics in the UK I have found most lecturers already hold their PhD - but that is not the case for all disciplines. I know other subjects people train to be a lecturer with / whilst getting a PhD.
Hi, I commented on one of your other videos (I love your work, by the way). My master's degree is in Law, AI and New Technologies (LLM (the degree, not Large Language Models)). In my law school, they do not want students using any kind of AI to complete their work due to the risk of plagiarism. I'm sure you understand that within the law, both academic and industry, integrity is, first and foremost, a top priority. In my free time, I researched AI detection tools such as the one built into TurnItIn, and while it gives an indication of how much of the content is written by AI, it can actually be false. For example, OpenAI (the creators of ChatGPT) developed and released their own AI detection tool. A week later, it was withdrawn from the market due to inaccuracies in identifying AI-generated content. My theory is that a Generative AI system such as ChatGPT needs training data to learn and create the content, and this data is originally human-generated. This means that the AI is creating its content based on human-generated sources, which results in the AI content being indistinguishable from humans. While a lecturer may know for certain that the assessment paper is created by AI, the student copied and pasted it into a Word document and submitted it, proving it is impossible. This is why I am studying for a PhD in the best way to integrate AI into legal education. I am happy to discuss this further with you in detail if you would like. Let me know.
Hi, I'm due to start my PhD in Law & AI. It's a multidiscipline exploring the best use and integration of artificial intelligence in legal education to prepare students for an AI-driven legal career. I was wondering if you had any 'early academic career' advice, or maybe you have already made a video on it?
Hi - congratulations on starting the PhD soon 😃 Your research topic sounds really interesting. I did a podcast series chatting to other researchers who use AI - including education and legal topics. Just in case you fancy listen, it is on Spotify "Surrey Speaks, Will AI...?" 😀 I've made a few earlier career early videos, but not one on how to 'start' the PhD research journey. Fab idea for a video, I will add it to the list - thank you! In the meantime this one is about the PhD review process ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GGWsAT6r1l8.htmlsi=d2Q7ELrYu8EhDIpB
A PhD is typically considered a prerequisite for academic research positions, although rare exceptions may exist. While postdoctoral experience is often beneficial and sometimes expected by top-tier institutions, it is not universally mandatory. Postdoctoral requirements can vary depending on the nature of the position, with research-focused roles generally placing greater emphasis on such experience than teaching-oriented ones. Ultimately, individual circumstances and career goals play a significant role in determining the necessity of a postdoc. Thanks for the great video, Greetings 😍😍🌹🌹♥♥
Thank you Caroline, great as always and I absolutely agree with your conclusions about the need to demonstrate your research track record. A PhD and Postdoc are obvious ways to evidence this.
Love your videos and they have been deeply helpful. Speaking from experience, academia is littered with precariously employed part-time teaching staff who do tutorials, grading, etc. who are always close to burn-out (underpaid and overworked). When it comes to Research Assistant positions (post-doc) my experience is that those positions are a fait a comple with the 'public tender' being mostly for show. The position already being agreed to be given with a preferred candidate. The reality is that for a vast majority of hopeful or precarious academics, academia is something of a racket unless you know the right people in the right places. Getting a PhD only means that you will be starting at the very bottom rung of a fiercely competitive and deeply unfair ladder
Thank you for sharing - I agree, academia is a very competitive space to work in. (I know other careers are too) Like you say, there is a strong emphasis on building your academic network... might be worth a video on the topic. Thank you.
Thanks ma'am. 1) Is the title of professor universal across institutions? 2) "Can someone awarded a professorship at Fourah Bay College, Sierra Leone, be considered a professor at Cambridge University?"

everything you say in this video is very educational and of interest to me but will you be talking about how much does an lecturer get paid, who pays for the traveling expensive, room and board when out of state, meals is this included.
Thanks for the comment 😀 I've touched on the salary scale in a past video but a while ago so deft time for a refresh about pay, travel costs etc. Thank you - I'll add that to the list of upcoming summer videos.
I like all your videos very much, I would be a fool if I didn't take this chance to ask you, are you single? I asked because you're not only very intelligent but boy you're very good at looking. With my luck you are probably married unavailable
Being a guy from a third world country, how do I apply for lecturing positions at a university? Like I have tried applying by follwoing the "due process" and fillined those long forms in the uni career portals but they always ask oh will you require future visa sponsorship and then you click yes and that's pretty much where the system will your application right away.
This was so helpful. There are no resources about how to handle a professors job! I’m require to have teaching research and service with teaching being weighted higher. I have been so frustrated because I feel I can’t seem to knock down the “urgent to do” for teaching or from other faculty. And my personal priorities for work are so neglected.
Just found this and very useful - I'm a month away from submission! And I definitely want at least minor corrections - I lose my library access the minute I 'finish' and I need the library access to prepare the articles I want to do.
I am happy to find the video😀😃, as I kept waiting on Monday.😪 Excellent idea for the video and the new series. Getting a research grant is not easy. Applied research ideas are more likely to attract grants; thus, collaboration with industry is essential. However, this collaboration is often individualized, and there are no official channels in most cases. Universal standardized protocols for collaboration might be a useful idea. As always, I thoroughly enjoyed the video and eagerly await the next part. Keep up the great work ❤❤ 🌹🌹 Greetings❤❤
I heard that in industry you don't publish. Is that accurate? Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm still in undergrad (for neuroscience, in the US) but I plan on doing a Phd. I'm thinking industry will be better for me because as of now, I don't have any desire to teach, plus I hear the pay sucks and positions are very limited unless you want to adjunct (nope). I do really want to travel tho!
Hi, I am currently working on my bachelor's degree, I had the idea to submit my bachelor's thesis to a journal after it was graded. After my degree, I'm going to pursue a masters degree. But I am pretty motivated to do personal research for journals. Can I do that without any requirements?
I went through all these details some years ago, 🤕and it was a confusing, and lengthy process to get suitable funding and deal with it. I wish this video with all these helpful explanations were available then; 😌😪that would be great and time-saving. However, I really enjoyed watching it now and memorizing these days. 🤣😂☺Thanks for your great help to the academic community. Greetings.😍🌹
Pursuing Math Ph D with positive direction can continue beyond more + years given more opportunities even being an adult adult in certain remote barangay of a country. Thanks so much for the good idea you present. Gracias again.
