Do you believe the GR IIIx is still capable of taking landscape photos? I kind of love the GR IIIx photos more in your videos, but wondered how would hold up for landscapes? Planning a trip to the Scottish Highlands and thought Id ask :)
It's probably one of the noisiest point and shoot film cameras I've used now you mention it, but you don't really notice it in a city like London. I assume you are talking about volume and not grain?
@@po.ntandshoot volume yes! Can it be used for street photography tho? I just read that its not so much about the shutter sound that draws attention but pointing a camera at sb, so idk😂
Love your videos and photos! I was wondering, are you going to keep both the Fuji X100VI and Ricoh GR IIIx? Or are you still planning to sell one of them? Basically looking for some kind of review of both I guess. Though I wouldn't mind owning both as well.
I expected the GR IIIx to become obsolete after buying the X100vi, but the longer I own the Ricoh, the more attached I become. It has a very different use case as a pocketable point and shoot. Don't get me wrong, the Fuji can sit comfortably in a jacket pocket, but it's a camera I choose when I've planned a trip or an event. I've even done some paid work with it already. So, yes, keeping both (for now) !
When translated in '35mm' terms, the GR III has a focal length of 28mm, while the GR IIIx has a focal length of 40mm. So, the GR IIIx is more 'zoomed' in, making it the preferred choice for photographing subjects. The GR III therefore has the wider lens and is more suited to architecture and more traditional street photography. Otherwise, the only other difference know of is that the GR IIIx is slightly thicker - hope I explained that clearly enough!
@@po.ntandshoot I recently bought the Ricoh and it seems to only turn on when I have it plugged on my apple USBC cable. Is this normal? Am I supposed to purchase another battery charger separately?
Really, really nice man. Just good stuff all around. I respect your ability to get "in" on the shots. The gardeners with the umbrellas were unreal!! Nicely captured.
Amazing shots!! Im headed to Japan this weekend and I can’t wait as I just purchased my Ricoh. Are you able to show the settings you used? I’m new to this system and I’m not sure how to properly set it up before I leave. Thank you!
This weekend? Lucky you! I've yet to make a video about camera settings, so it's a bit out of my POV comfort zone, but I'm considering it. I switch between 2 custom settings, saved on the top dial: The first one (for 90% of my shots) is a single point focus with continuous wide tracking (ISO and Shutter speed set to Auto with a minimum base), so all I'm changing while shooting is the aperture wheel and exposure compensation toggle. The second is snap focus mode (for rapid fire street photography) set to a distance of approx. 2m. Like the first custom setting, I usually just change the aperture and exposure compensation if required. The above is probably unclear, apologies. Maybe I should make a video.
Please don't get mad but I just posted an Anti fuji x100vi video. Just trying to help my fellow poor photogs that are burning with jealousy from all these sexy machines getting shown off online. I have a hard time handling my Gear acquisition syndrome. I bought the GRIIIX, but I'm trying to have willpower and resist the X100VI. Beautiful shots man! Subbed
Sure - that was starting from the area around Heian Shrine and then walking east to Nanzen-ji gate / temple. I highly recommend the latter as there are aqueducts and disused railway lines in this area as well, which I didn't know were there until I rocked up.
A major advantage of the Ricoh for causal users that want to use Lightroom but don’t want to pay the subscription is that you can edit the DNGs for free. To edit Fuji’s raw files you have to pay.
Great video! I finally got my hands on a X100VI and I honestly am in a weird place on it. I do like the EVF, better AF and shooting experience, but I really am spoiled by my GR IIIX. The weight difference is pretty jarring going between each camera. I find myself hesitant to bring the Fuji anywhere just because of how much less portable it is and sweating the idea of breaking something while Fuji doesn't seem to be doing repairs on them right now (makes sense with the production issues).
'Weird place on it' accurately describes how I feel. Given I swapped the X-Pro 3 + 23mm f/2 out for the X100VI, I find the size very small / good. It's the image quality that I'm not sold on entirely, and the fact that the GR IIIx has spoilt me as you mentioned.
@@po.ntandshootTotally. I honestly would have preferred the X-Pro2/3 if it weren’t for the insane used prices + the screen issues on the 3. I’m on the fence with the quality as well, I’ve been going out with both and find that I like the GR’s lens more and the Fuji’s film sim options more. Torn!
@@po.ntandshoot Strangely enough I bought the GR IIIx to compare to my VI and I'm not seeing this difference in sharpness everyone is going on about. Maybe from minimum focus to around 50cm-1m distance maybe the Ricoh is slightly sharper if the Fuji is kept at F2, but beyond that the Fuji seems to have more detail. Also the Ricoh images seem to be quite a bit more noisy at minimum ISO. I am immensely impressed by the size of the Ricoh but after hearing so much about its sharpness I'm really not seeing it.
@@GhosT396 I'd agree that the difference in sharpness is minimal and and doesn't match the online commentary. It's the image quality that I do prefer on the Ricoh, however; the micro contrast and how it deals with shadows/highlights. The difference in noise is pretty significant, I agree. I fell in love with it after about 6 months I'd say, accepting all of its quirks.
@@po.ntandshoot Interesting, maybe I need more time to appreciate it. What do you think of the SOOC colors? I really don't want to have to edit my photos and I'm finding it hard to get good colors from the Ricoh SOOC.
Great pictures and a wonderful video! I watched it so many times, just like the videos of Japan before. Keep it up, and I hope that one day I can take pictures as well as you do. P.S.: I was in Tokyo last week with my first camera (Fujifilm X100V), and I am happy with the pictures that I took.
The Fuji has far, far superior single point autofocus. In harsh light the Ricoh struggles / hunts. Other focus modes, across the board, are much better on the Fuji. The snap focus on the Ricoh is special and works well, but I don't think it will be of much use for landscapes.
Fantastic calm but energetic video capturing the culture and world of Kyoto. I’m am deep in the market for a a travel camera. As a flight attendant I’m in a different city every day all around the world. I love capturing the culture and such but carrying a 5d with either a 40 or 50mm has become a chore. I still can’t decide between these two cameras. What character or unique values does one camera have over the other that makes you reach for it as opposed to the other. Such as which has a lens or sensor that touches closer to what you prefer to see or like more? Thank you in advance. And thank you for such great content that exposes beautiful places such as Kyoto to the world.
Now that's a tough one to answer, but it sounds like the Ricoh is for you. No other camera can match its quality to size. I prefer the image quality straight out of camera over the Fuji. Given how much you travel, the only drawback is its durability...going from a 5D to the GR...that will take some getting used to. However, provided it's got a snug leather case and it sits snug in your front pocket, it will be absolutely fine. Happy for others to chip in!
@@csukaryo 35mm is my favourite focal length and as wide as I like to go. I've struggled with 24mm & 28mm in the past. I took a risk with the 40mm and really love it. It isolates subjects, if you want to, pretty well at f/2.8. Thought I might sell it after getting the X100VI, but there's no way I will.
@@po.ntandshoot much appreciated. Certainly nervous for the lack of durability and weather sealing. But a solid case would certainly put things at ease. Thank for your thought and time in putting some fuel on my camera hunting fire. I hope to be shooting one soon. If only I could find one 🤣
@@csukaryo the X is certainly a subject camera. Where the III captures the environment the X condenses your scene to a more focused subject. That’s my opinion, a wide lens is great for everyday adventures and capturing memories where a 40mm equivalent brings in the art of photography.
@@po.ntandshoot i love it. i am choosing between the two. i don't know editing so if only possble, can you feature both cameras pictures straight from the camera? may include their respective simulation. for dummy like me - capture and upload
@@QuynhAndromache good idea, I can try and make a SOOC comparison video I'm the future. For the Fuji, I used straight out of camera JPEGs in my 'One week with the X100VI', so feel free to check that out. In my opinion, however, the images straight out of the Ricoh GR IIIx are better. I edit the contrast and highlights of these less than the Fuji. I enjoy the positive and negative film presets most.
@@po.ntandshoot I will surely check that out. Thank you for being the person who feature the product based on their real life performance. you let your work speaks volume.
Thanks. I love the Ricoh image quality. For these images, I used Ricoh's positive film simulation, which is set in camera and also applied in Lightroom. I then apply some minor tweaks (contrast / highlights etc.).
How are you liking the two cameras overall? I only just got the x100vi, and already own the gr3x. Honestly, favoring the ricoh. I didn't realize how dense the Fuji was. And it doesn't seem to handle aperature priority as well (always favoring the lowest shutter speed).
Happy with both, but I agree with your preference. The GR IIIx is the better everyday carry - it's becoming more obvious to me the more I use the Fuji. I also prefer the image quality of the Ricoh. However, the Fuji is more capable and reliable for paid work and other styles of photography (portraiture and landscape), so it has its strengths.
Regarding aperture priority, are you setting minimum shutter speeds? I agree that it seems to stick close to the minimum, but provided I remember to change the minimum figure / minimum ISO when lighting changes, it works well enough. On occasion I just override it on the top dial.
Yes I do! But I'm realizing I should just assume the "minimum" will be the actual shutter speed haha. Agreed on the Ricoh and IQ. One thing about the Fuji is the inclusion of a flash ❤️, big fan. Still learning the ropes, opinions may change. Thanks for the video and your reply 👍
Yeah we had a nice chat about the photography course/tour that she is on in Japan. Retired with two Leicas swung around the neck - one day I'll get there!
Just got scammed on ebay for the x100vi 😢 Now in the process of getting my money back. I now promise myself this will be the last time I will try to buy a hyped product. 😅 Thank you Fujifilm, for making me have the most unique camera buying experience ever.
@@Teteerck Yes, it was my bad. Someone was selling it at near retail price and the seller feedback looked legit. I just got so tired of waiting for my pre-order but I still cannot get over the mental barrier of spending around £2,000 for a point and shoot. I am too old I guess, and I am still not used to this hyper-inflated market. I have since decided to wait for my pre-order, whenever that may be completed, and just buy myself a new lens when I get my refund.

Great shots. Seeing this makes me want to trade in my Ricoh GRII for a IIIx. I've always preferred the 40mm focal point. Nice vid, looks like your trip went well!
@@po.ntandshoot Haha, might be good to have both. I've got a feeling I'll end up keeping the GRii if I get a GRiiix. It's been pretty hard to find a used one at a good price though... I don't really want to but I might have to buy a new one.
