I don't know why people knock these. I had a 10 year old mg maestro efi in the late 90s. Thing went really well, comfy to drive and relatively economical. It would outdo the golf gti's and xr3i's of the day. It put up with me thrashing it to death for a good couple of years without ever letting me down. Rust was a constant battle though 😂.

“Pull off the circuit now”…. Yeah because it can only do one lap at that pace 😆 loved my dad’s blue MG Montego! But “tremendous torque” 🤣🤣

At 120 mph on the motorway, I can no longer check my rear view mirror even when going in a perfectly straight line, simply because the horizon is approaching too quickly to be able to take my eyes from assessing it safely if I take my eyes off it. *_126_* mph is therefore plenty fast enough. 7.3 seconds to 60 is also faster than anything I've ever driven... about 9.6 seconds was the record for anything I've ever used, and that was breathtakingly fast - very enjoyable. I'd be more than than satisfied with the performance of the MG Montego even to this day.

The issue criticism I have is the race drivers socks and shoes on the road test. 😂😂😂😂

I remember driving one of these back in the 90's. Very quick in a straight line but it didn't like corners or braking. Was very impressed they managed to get that much power from a single SU carb!

They were dogs of cars, even then. I had a mk1 Golf Gti with 115 hp. it was a (relative ) rocket that could carry the speed. I now own a Golf R 7.5 ??(tuned to 400hp), a GR Yaris (say no more, but best drivers car I ever owned ), and a Porsche 991 CS. None match the superiority of the GTi, since every sporting car now has 300 plus HP. times change .

150hp. shocking stuff. BUT the Porsches and Ferraris of the same era were only producing 200ish ponies

Lol. Wonder if he really thought what he said or was paid to. The turbo versions were fast for that time but not nearly as fast as the rust that got to the floor and arches. Even the Dagenham rust buckets faired better.

Yes sir, the salesman is always a liar, so just in case I get a job with VW in the future, when this utterly Vile failure of a design and about as desirable as cunnilingus on a 90 year old in a home, who can't bathe herself, and you happen to recognise me, I would advise against the purchase, and spend a little more money on an equivalent ford, BMW or Audi/VW which won't depreciate, or be an embarrassment to be seen in in 2 years time, when it's burning oil, and hold it's value and desirability, do not buy. I'm handing in my cards in a minute.

As a Talbot enthousiast on the mainland really via the Chrysler Alpine there has allways been somekind of an connection to the british car products. Sadly though over here those were rarely seen over here. Well that's too bad really since british manufacturers had their compatetives really like this magnifficent MG Montego Turbo. Great car, great perfomance and nice design and for a familycar really. Thankyou for the lovely video.

I once "blew up" an MG Montego on the M6. It wasn't the loudest bang, but there was a lot of smoke. It turned out to be the cork rocker cover gasket failing and spraying oil everywhere.

How times change. Loved my MG Metro turbo stage 3 by Avonbar. Now running an A200d merc stage 2. 240bhp and 370 ft/lbs torque. 0-60mph 4.9 secs. 70-110 about the same time. 150mph top end. Plus 65mpg easy driving 😊

I remember getting stopped in my 1990 MG EFi by the Police around 1996/7, I started shouting at the copper, why have you stopped me? I wasn't speeding, my lights all work, my tyres are good etc. He replied, sorry son but Northumbria Police got one of the first MG Turbo Police demonstrators back in 1984 and I was assigned it. I loved it! I just wanted to look at your car. I ended up letting him have a drive of it 🤣🤣

I purchased one and it went like stink. However every time I went on a multistory car park ramp the engine cut out and you could restart it when back on the level. I took it to my local dealer and checked the engine all fine . Next weekend same again, took it back, same again. At the back of the garage was a ramp to a lower level so I said have you tried it on that no but its running fine. I insisted that they try it and it cut out. In total three months had gone by. They kept the car , and a month later an expert from Longbridge arrived. The factory is only ten miles from the garage. Still mystified. Car went back to Longbridge . Then they found the problem. They had run out of MG Montego turbo fuel tanks so they thought lets fit standard MG ones until new supplies come in. No records kept. The tank fits but runs at a different pressure. My car caused a recall. Typical Leyland and I bought an Opel Ascona afterwards. Lovely quality.

I wonder if anyone has one of these plus a MG Metro Turbo. That would be a delightful little classic car duo. My Mum had a Metro City,Maestro City and a Rover 216s. We had a Montego 1.6 and Gti estate in the too.

I still don’t understand how a turbo & carburettor work together ? Carburettors need a vacuum intake but a turbo charged engine works with a pressurised intake.

Checked on the DVLA tax this particular car was registered 25th August 1995. Tax due 1st of August 1996. Still red in colour. You would see a lot more on the road if they was not rust buckets.
