Original Naruto had really good Zabuza arc, then the chunin exam arc and some others. BUT! When Sarutobi sensei sacrificed himself to kill Orochimaru, and the only reason that fucker didn't die was the fact he had better plot armor..... this is where i said "that's it, i'm done with this bullshit anime" and never returned again. Bro the first Naruto series is basically just a hyper-extended prologue. Shippuuden is where that shit really hits it's stride on every level, story telling, character development, animation quality, all of it. As for best character, eezy peez. Itachi < Jiraiya < Kakashi < Neji, but the majority of the main characters get a good amount of development, and most of them give you at least some reason to really like them by the end....except Sasuke, he's an annoying twat until Boruto happens....
