Cornish tin was traded with the Mediterranean and beyond in the Bronze Age, not just in Western Europe. The next closest significant source of tin was in Afghanistan.
Modern mining technology really began in Cornwall. But mining there goes back at least to the Bronze Age, when Cornish mines exported the tin essential to make the bronze. The Romans mined there, too.
