Greetings. I talk about old video games on this channel, and sometimes new ones. I also stream sometimes on twitch and upload them to my other channel, feel free to check them out below. I use the twitter account to announce streams and videos, as well as re-tweeting skeletons from video games.
Plays the same as the Black Gate - I'd say 80-90% right, but SI had some decent upgrades in the engine and I've always put it over BG. That said - if you are playing in Exult (which I am 99.9% sure you are), then you get all the SI upgrades in BG and it's all great. I guess my point is (pushed glasses up on nose), play either or on Exult and it's perfect.
Ultima 8 is an excellent game that ran very slowly on our machines, despite my 8 MB of memory at the time. I started playing Ultima 5, 6, and 8. I was both surprised and disappointed because the top-down view with party management had completely disappeared. Despite this, I managed to finish Ultima 8 after three months. At one point, I had to restart the entire game because, unable to find the key to open the last chest containing the final piece of black rock, I ended up throwing it into the water from a bridge out of frustration. My face was eternally frozen when the fisherman gave me the key to that chest. Now that I'm 50 years old, I've always been a big fan of the Ultima series, and the saddest day of my gaming life was learning about the closure of Origin studio. Ultima 7, Serpent Isle, and Ultima Underworld 2 remain my best gaming experiences. Ultima 8, which I initially disliked, turns out to be exceptional with the benefit of hindsight. The stories and universe of Ultima are the most beautiful I've experienced in my 40 years of gaming.
13:02 I love the glaring polygon clip on the left here just before you open your bag. That is the perfect symbolism of this game for me: it's just one big screw up.
I absolutely loved this game!! I would have easily spent over 1000+ hours playing this game. I have replayed it over and over countless times. This has soooo much potential for a better remake. I would keep everything the same, like the way you control the avatar with the jumping and tricky puzzles that require the jumping aspect. I'd also keep the isometric top down, but overhaul the graphics, populate the world more, and add more monsters and NPC's as well as a ton more side quests. I hope that there is a copy of the Lost Vale out there and that one day, we might get the chance to play it.
Always saying how easy combat is... meanwhile you know about the hoe, all free hidden magical item stashes, and went through FOV first. FOV was an add-on expansion where the sword was meant as an ultimate reward for finishing the last quest. Using the blackrock sword is almost a cheat because it clearly breaks the game's combat challenge. Playing normally certain enemies do pose a threat.
Every time I tried to play this game, I get turned off by the constant demands of the companions for food. Any tips on how to deal with this? I know you stockpiled it, but where did you get enough money to do so at the beginning of the game?
I hunt deer. There's a deer just outside to the south of Trinsic near/past some wolves. If you kill it, loot the meat, then move away and come back, it respawns. I fill up a bag or two and it lasts me awhile until I get some gold later on.
I tried to play this game "seriously", but I got bored in the Earth section. However! I absolutely LOVED walking around in town, exploring every nook and cranny of it, as well as talking to all the NPCs! And there were a ton of books you could read. I still remember one of them, titled "Practical jokes." The first page said: "Chapter 1: Exploding books... Hehehe..", and then the book blew up 🙂
Amazing monitor, i cant afford it though sadly. Do you think the Eizo flexscan s1934 would make a good retro gaming windows xp monitor? Ive also been looking at some NEC 5:4 monitors theyre still selling on B&H
I checked it out. Response time looks a bit high (14ms), and I have no idea how high the input lag would be. I think 5:4 monitors are nice as long as people are ok with black bars for non 5:4 games. I see the S2133 go for about 300-500 on eBay if that's still an option.

Just a few days ago i bought a Lenovo Thinkvision l1711p thinking it was a 4:3 monitor since the screen seemed to have that aspect ratio. Did some small research before buying it btw. I wanted to make sure it was atleast capable of 720p which it was since the native resolution is 1280x1040 masomenos around there. I wanted it to be atleast 720p capable since i was somewhat curious on how a ps3/4 or xbox360/ one would look on a 4:3 screen in hd. I hadnt done much research before buying it since there was other guys looking at the monitor after i asked jaja. So i just bought it & took it home. When getting home i checked again online and the aspect ratio was 5:4 and not 4:3. I searched up on google & youtube for info about this aspect ratio & there wasnt much honestly. Anywho i hooked up the xbox one to it and set it to 720p. Well it looks somewhat weird but fine. It looks squished by the sides but still great. It looks alot more better than the tv & alot more better than the old monitor i used to have that i sold (it was a 16:9 hp sn20 or something like such). The image on the monitor looks perfect. Games like cod ghosts look realistic? I know it sounds silly but they look realistic compared to my rooms tv or the kiving rooms 4k tv. Games like rdr2 which are 4k also look better on here. Like i said the image looks great but squished somehow. Now im not complaining but im somewhat bothered i guess you could say..? I like it but i dont. In some games circke shaped objects look like they should while on others they look oval or squished in. Im also thinking this might work better on per say a wii in a 16:9 aspect setting since the wii has anamorphic widescreen & not a real one & wellp the 5:4 aspect ratio fits between 4:3 and 16:9 so yeah.. Anyways i was wondering if anyone could help me out with 2 things i wanna know. I wanna know if the display panel type of the monitor is tn, va, or ips. I know its lcd but i wanna know what panel technology it has. If it helps in any means the monitor was designed for businesses. Has a cool monitor arm stand thingy that lets me tilt the screen back & forth as well as turn it to either side and also switch the monitor vertically. Ive heard somewhere before that this feature coms in the more "high end" business monitors but i might be completely wrong so yeah. I was also wondering if anybody recomends any games they believe might look good on a aspect ratio such as the one my monitor has.
While the slog of going to each town and cleansing each shrine was banal, I’m surprised there was no mention of Valoria, since it was a bit of a departure, where you had to convince three other knights to regain their courage to attack the Triumvirate demon, which was an inspiring scene to me
I was like 12 when this game released and I loved it. I had a magazine that had a complete walkthrough, so I was able to actually make my way through and finish the game w/o getting too stuck. I loved collecting items and storing them in a house I took over. Making dozens of magic talismans and tormenting the populace was my favorite part haha
This was a really fun video! I will say, as a kid who started on Ultima V, I wasn't put off by the gold not being it's own item in the bag. "Back in my day, the gold was just a number! Not some item you had to move around your backpack!" lolol I didn't get a computer upgrade until well after Ultima VII had released. My next Ultima was VIII, and by god I loved that game. I know most people crap all over it, but I immersed myself in the world. I made dozens of necro... thingies. I preped so many sorcerer spells. I had a save game at the end where I was virtually a god and I would just cause mayhem with my magic powers. I took over a house in the main city. I had chests of gems, magic weapons, bombs. I collected every bomb I found in the game. I put them in a single chest. If I triggered one bomb in the chest, it would explode and ignite the other bombs. Then my 486 would lock up for about 5 minutes. Then all the bombs would slowly start to all go off. It took me like 4 minutes to save a game. It... was awesome.
Love this game! Fun fact is most of the assets from this game (graphics (including monsters)/sound effects) were taken from Eye of the Beholder III. In fact, the enemy at 7:35 is actually a boss in Eye III (Captain Fflar). I also have the Japanese PC-9801 version which I've played through on my channel.
The best way to break the economy was to start the roulette wheel spinning, then save the game. Note where it stops, load the game, then quickly bet all your money there. Somehow you're allowed to bet while the game is playing, but the result always matches what it was during the save.
Eizo is great for professional use, but for the same price target why not considering an Arcooda 20139 which has 15kHz / 24kHz, HDMI, better response time and support for almost every of resolution?
Great video! I've got the 2007fpb myself. The lag is fine for me so long as I make sure nothing else is laggy, like I won't use bluetooth controllers with it. The Eizo looks great but I can't spend that kind of money. If one popped up used locally for a nice price I might buy it. What makes this difficult is most of the later 4:3 screens that might have had decent refresh rates were also extremely budget, so they're usually 1024x768 or something similar, not 1600x1200.
I didn't hear or see mention of it, but Underworld Ascendant is technically the game's true successor. I'm very disappointed it would have been great if someone had found The Lost Vale .Can't believe that the creators didn't have bigger ego and say no EA mfckers we will stage a fake theft in our headcounters and actually release it ourselves for free or something like that .
i just love how spoony express our emotions when certain "situations" appear in the game, like: the Avatar caught by the Guardian, and the Great Earth Serpent did nothing, Spoony added some dialouge which apologize to Avatar with the excuse of they are too busy on restoring the balance in Serpent Isle. Btw, you made a great video on reviewing the plot cut too!
8:09 - Another thing is that Spark's portrait changes from crying to happy if you allow him to join your party. You are correct, with high base stats (probably even too high for a 14 year-old) at just level 1. Once Spark gets to level 9 and the correct training, he will have more useful stats than every party member except the Avatar. One of the things I didn't feel was realistic, since Dupre should be next after the Avatar. 10:29 - Mark & Recall is used to fast travel.
Yes, Mark & Recall is used to fast travel. And it requires reagents, a certain level+ to cast, and virtue stones. It is completely immersive, and takes effort to earn. Which adds to the immersion that I mentioned not long after that timestamp. I'm talking about fast travel like in Skyrim, where you click on a map to go to a point.
Blackrock Sword wise, Forge of Virtue was released ~5 months after Black Gate and about the same before UU2, probably they were already signficiantly through development to try and include the expansion content. Maybe not even working off a complete or final script for BG since they'd have overlapping development. If you came to it later (even I got the Ultima 7 complete edition with both games and expansions) you'd never entirely know that FoV was not originally part of the game.
Will say, for the museum, it depends on the premise that the museum is a reliable narrator. It'd make complete sense for a random tapestry weaver/painter to retcon the Avatars appearance in the first 3 game to match the one they're familiar with. And the artefacts could just be replicas. The Pagan references make no sense though, unless you really do a bunch of odd backend justifications that somehow his actions on Pagan were magically observed and noted.
Oh the boot disk. Basically MS-DOS couldn't handle memory (or wouldn't) so yeah Origin had this thing where you could setup a boot disk and basically run their own miniOS instead essentially to play the game Getting this kind of game out of pre-Pentium computers be crazy lol
Boot disks! These were disks that you would copy your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files onto. When booting up the PC, the disk drive would be read first, and therefore it would read the two files mentioned above. Why would someone do that? Within those files, you would determine the minimum to load while booting up, so that it would free up your system resources and the game could then have enough resources to run. FunFact (or not): Recently, I just came across my boot disk for Strike Commander FunFact 2: My friend purchased an Ultima game and also spent a bit more for the “speech pack”. Not sure if it was this one or not. It’s the one that starts out with a beheading(?)
Instead of saying the Avatar was replaced by a Changeling, i am more to the fans theory of "the Avatar had his bang(s) so hard in Pagan, until he had lost his memory of his previous adventures"
I have a Dell U2412M monitor. It is a 16:10 ratio with a resolution of 1920x1200. Like the 2007Fpb the panel is IPS which has good viewing angles. It is also LED backlit so it doesn't wear out anywhere as bad as old CCFL backlighting like my old 2007Fpb did. There is a feature to set the ratio to 4:3 so you can input any resulation upto 1600x1200 although it does not get on with the game with Psycho Pinball due to it's odd resolution.. If you have the psysical space and don't mind having the black borders on the left and right hand side this would also be an ideal cheaper alternative.
There were screenshots of an earlier version of Ultima IX which was apparently scrapped before being rebuilt completely to be 3D and have the new perspective. I thought that earlier version looked awesome; more like your classic Ultima. What we got instead was just hot garbage.
I was in college when this game came out. My roommate and I finished it, pre EZmode jump patch! I remember thinking what a crazy departure it was from previous Ultimas, but if you remember, Richard Garriott was a strong believer in his games pushing the tech envelope of PCs. I think U8 missed the mark a bit, because even though I didn't *hate* the game, it just didn't feel like an Ultima. It was also around this time (maybe a little later) that info was starting to come out about Ultima Online!
