My first amp is the American 811 H uses 4 tubes , still have it, and nothing is wrong with it but I bought the AL80b if I ever need to buy new tubes for the 811 H , Can I buy the 572s is there any rework needed done inside the amp or is it just plug and play?
Plug and play but strongly recommend going through the amp and doing what you see in my videos prior to plugging in. But only if capable and at your own risk 73
If ever a anode to filament arc, purpose was to short and bring the arc to ground. Did not work well. The designer of the pa recommends removal. Some older ones have two, one per side of the filament. The two gas discharge tubes I place at the socket base, add full protection in the event of this type of fault,
This is not my amp but the Amp Repair Guy recently updated and repaired my amplifier. His workmanship is outstanding. He really cares about what he is doing. As important as the quality of work is I found working with him was like working with a good friend. Thank you for a job and experience that was well done.
glad you are feeling better, you sound great! thanks for the upload. i have one of these under my desk, i should send it to you. have no idea why it won't come on ....Marcus in west Texas
Our entire family had Covid when it first started in 2020. I healed up in about a week, which was good because I became an at home nurse for five weeks. 😮 Each person is different but you should be okay since you got the vaccines. Get well soon.
Great video you are very knowledgeable Wonder why they never hard grounded the grids to begin with can you offer an explanation for educational purpose I would like to know. I am sure know more than most. Thanks and Happy late 4th
Simple, would take longer for them to do it the way I do it. Time is money Same goes for the al811h Pa where they ground the grids. I have seen the stud nuts loose in the al80 series pa’s and socket screws loose in the grounded grid al811h pa’s. Very important to have a solid grid to chassis connection. I don’t want the customer to have send the pa in for repair again, I cut no corners!!!
love your videos ....I have this amp and its been a good one so far but like you said , I'm thinking of getting mew caps due to age. thanks for the upload ......Marcus in west Texas
@@amprepairguy I am in Canada, shipping of an amp would be brutal, If i could get a switch i could likely replace it myself. finding parts north of the border is very difficult.
Could you take the slightly broken air variable capacitors and rebuild them using parts from the really broken ones? Just asking because one day, they may not be available anymore. Thanks for the video.
I used to do that back in the day but requires labor, plus stuck with old ground contacts. Not all can come apart If had to start doing this again I would. But only if forced to. But I prefer new.
Great video. People shouldn't buy amps if they're not prepared to either fix it themselves or pay an expert like you to do it. An investment either way. Good luck. I hate dealing with idiots and selling gear too. Especially when they don't understand the time that's gone into something like this.
Already sold it for the amount I had quoted the original owner. This was a first , ever !! Thank you for the compliment If had refused I would have worked on another amp. Unfortunately had half torn apart so had to keep on going.
Thank you Joe The videos are to show the customer what I did to their amp and to show others what to expect when sending a pa in for repair. Also shows what should be done if they go elsewhere. No corner cutting
Hey there, I hope you're well! I recently acquired an AL-811H, but unfortunately the "Load" variable capacitor is not turning smoothly throughout. Seems to get very tight around 5 through 6. As such, I fear some of its plates may be contacting. I suspect this because the amp was shipped to me with tubes installed and unprotected, which resulted shattered glass inside the amp throughout. Initially, turning the "Load" knob did not actually turn the rotor, where the knob was just rotating on a stuck shaft, but with some finessing, I was able to get it to rotate the rotor. The plates on this variable cap are so close together its hard to tell if contact is being made, or if the shaft itself is just damaged in some way which is less concerning to me. I've noticed that MFJ sells a 282-2113, a 20-823pf replacement, however, given the fate of MFJ, I'd be surprised if this is something they would have in stock... none the less I have not contacted them yet. I have yet to drive the amp, as I fear a short on the "Load" however, for what it's worth, the Grid Current with no load is 1700 with some vintage RCA 811A's installed. Two questions for you: Is this something you would be able to address if i solicited a repair from you? Alternatively, would you happen to have any recommendations for a replacement? Returning this seems to be out of the question since it was a private sale of a "Works Good" amp. Thank you so much!
