Thanks for your review. I am hoping that I can find one of these used. My daughter is finishing year 12, and wants to work at Spotlight, and at the same time start her own business, designing and creating short runs of clothing. She has been using my wife's old sewing machine, and this machine looks like a great step up for her, and something that will last. I appreciate your effort in sharing your review.
How lovely of you to be looking into machines with her! I have a friend who is getting back into sewing and she agreed that this would last her, and allow her to tackle everything she wants to make. Also the frequent 50% off machine sales at spotlight come in handy! Mine has definitely had many hundreds of hours sewn on it over the past 1.5 years and it’s going strong! Please come back to update me when she starts her business, I would love to follow!
Is this machine able to do leather like the 5523 is advertising. I'm a beginner looking for my first machine (after making my first skirt on a friends machine) but i'm wanting to make a lot of Steampunk projects. So need to be able to work with all fabric types.
I haven’t personally used leather with it, although I feel like I might have seen a video showing that? The most I have worked with is 6 layers of denim 😂 but you may be looking at a semi or full industrial machine if you plan to work with a lot of heavy textiles!
Hmm my model is the HD6805c and it has it, I can’t confirm for sure (you may have to look online) but I feel like it’s a super common stitch, most machines would have it!
@behindtheseamswithjess I found the manual online, and it shows which stitches are for stretch fabric. You're so sweet, thank you for answering my questions 💗 I tried to tag you in Stacy's video, did it work?
It’s been great so far! I have had it for just under two years and it’s been fab, just gave it a good clean up and oiling after working with some fluffy fabrics. All running well though 😄 although I am looking at an industrial juki or brother hopefully this year 😅
Thinking about upgrading from my beginner setup, I’d like to not buy another machine aside from a serger in the future. How do you guys feel about this machine? I make clothing garments for reference
I still love this machine! I make garments too and it’s been great. I am considering getting a Juki industrial by the end of the year, mostly for improved speed and stitch quality, but will definitely keep this to use for everything else than an industrial can’t do
@meeleetsah hmmm I couldn’t say for sure how long it would take! I have never tried hand sewing a whole outfit! Most of my projects take anywhere between 20-30 hours though, so I assume it would take a while!
I can’t say for sure as I have never tried it, but I assume if you had the appropriate foot and dropped the feed dogs, it might be possible? I think dedicated free motion machines have much longer arms to allow for more fabric though!
This is an excellent, through tutorial to an obviously, well drafted pattern with some beautiful couture details! Absolutely love it and just bought the pattern! Thank you for offering a high quality sewing pattern. I can't wait to get started on this project! I'm excited to see what other lovely patterns you release! Congratulations!
Yay, great to see you back with another vid! And the dress turned out amazing too! There are some dresses that I've had my eye on recreating for some time - unfortunately long enough that they're no longer online, it seems. All I can do is hope that one day my skills can match yours 🙏
Thank you so much! Hmm can you find any photos of them anywhere? A lot of dresses I love are years and years old, but if you can find one or two good photos, you can reverse engineer the process!!
@@behindtheseamswithjess you're welcome! :D yeah i took some photos of the dresses while they were in the shop window - not sure if they're the best references, but I think it could be enough to at least get somewhat close!
@Stormy38044 oooh definitely! Usually I can’t get photos that show every part, so I will have to make some of it up as best as possible! If you need help, reach out 🫶🏼
@@behindtheseamswithjess yes! I think even if you can get photos of every part, some small changes need to be made anyway to get that perfect fit! Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!
@@behindtheseamswithjess I am really impressed by your talent and skills, look how slender and beautiful your skillful fingers are, so clever at designing high fashion to suit your fashion, very clever lady
Hi Lovely, would you mind sharing what you made with the gorg pink linen cotton blend flower material? I loved it too and bought 10m!!!! Love your style and recently subscribed 🎉 ❤
Hello!! Ooh I actually haven’t touched it yet! I need to plan what to make with it soon as I’m so in love with it, it reminded me of the Zimmermann “botanica butterfly” maxi dress when I saw it! But I’m not 100% sure if I should go for something similar, do you have any ideas of what you will make? Or maybe I will use it to recreate the hydrangea dress I made last year? That only took 4m from memory 🤔 I only got 6m so I’m very jealous of your 10! 😂 maybe I need to go snag more!
I am not as creative as you so please let us know when you make something amazing! I am very interested in a pattern ed so you could probably get a tutorial? Have u thought of that?
Wow what a stunning dress, I wish I was 50 years younger! I don't think anyone could make spotlight fabric look better. I spot a chandelier in your sewing room, looks a bit fancy, perhaps you could do a sewing room tour.
Ahhh good old spotlight fabric 😂 I have to admit, it’s usually a bit of a waiting game until something fab comes along! Although I had my eye on this fabric for a few months, I’m glad it worked out for this dress! Yes I love a little bit of bling!! 🥰 I have a little more decorating to do and then I can definitely do a sewing room tour!
I feel the same as you, I don’t feel I am creative enough to think of my own designs but I do love the process of making clothes and there is so much inspiration out there and techniques to learn.
The outside was Panama suiting from spotlight! Looks as though the colour is sold out though 😩 but I did recommend a similar fabric called mechano by rathdowne fabrics in the description, it has a touch of stretch though! The lining is cotton voile 😊
Jess! I am so excited for you and all of your hard work shows! It amazes me that you say you aren’t creative because pattern drafting is a SKILL! I am so excited to see you! I think your dress looks and fits better than the original! I love seeing your beautiful sweet face! I am going to enjoy every bit of your video! Congrats on your move! ❤️
Oh my gosh you are SO sweet!! Thank you for such a lovely comment 🥰 I feel like having true creativity is so rare 😭 but identifying that I don’t have that has helped me to realise my skills in re-creating 😜 and thank you for the congratulations on the move! What a month that was 😂
Hi, dear, thanks so mutch for your rewiew, sorry for my English, i bought it few days ago and I love it from the beginning, I'm beginner and I want to ask you if you have some suggestuon about the right stich to use for a little hem in a light jersey fabric I tryed overlock stich but something was wrong and the fabric was piched under please let me know 🙏🏻bye Daria from Italy
Hi Daria, I’m so sorry but I haven’t used jersey/stretch fabric! I only sew with woven fabric, however I know a lot of people use the zigzag stitch on these types of fabric!
Hi, I have this machine and sew fairly heavy stuff at 4.5mm stitch length with it. It is good except that the backstitch seems to be only one length ...2mm, almost the shortest length the machine sews, so it is impossible to reverse into the same holes unless set to 2. Have you found this, or possibly discovered how to make them match?
Oh how strange! I haven’t noticed this but I don’t change my stitch length often unless I’m just popping in a basting stitch, so mine may be the same Have you tried just changing the stitch length to 0 and doing a few stitches on the spot instead of reversing if this is for back tacking?
@behindtheseamswithjess iI do use the tie off, which does work, although at the end of a seam in heavyweight material, I prefer to reverse and forward to make it strong. For now, I'm doing two tie offs separated by a stitch. Seems pretty strong that way.
I love the pink with the gold details. I have bought your pattern, I hope I can do it justice. I have a pretty sage green floral linen print. Where did you get your gold buckle & the piping? I am finding it hard to source.
Oooh that sounds pretty! From memory they were both thrifted from the sewing basket in Sydney! My local spotlight has piping, but it was expensive. I actually had to make some extra as I ran out, it can be done by sewing thin rope between a piece of bias tape or ribbon! For interesting belt buckles, I usually like Etsy if I can’t find one in a second hand store. Most standard belt buckles online are too boring! Etsy will have a few it you search for “decorative belt buckles”, although they do end up being a bit pricey!
@@behindtheseamswithjess Thanks Jess for the prompt reply. I have been watching RU-vid on how to make your own piping. At least I can get the colour I want. I will take a look at Etsy & Trift stores.
I am about to cut out my pattern pieces. But quick question - my fabric pattern has a right way up so I am assuming I cant put my pattern pieces upside down? I am a beginner. can you confirm?
If you mean your fabric pattern runs in one direction, then I agree that you wouldn’t cut the pieces upside down! You might end up using a bit more fabric to ensure they are all oriented nicely on your fabric 🙂
I love your videos, I like that you try on your garments at the end of the video. Amazing result. Thank you for sharing everything look spectacular on you.
I just ordered this machine (currently have three fully restored No.6 treadle machines and a No.66, but are display pieces), and am completely new to machine sewing. I am an American Revolutionary Reenactor, and want to make my own hybrid (machine sewn hidden seams, hand stitched visible seams) frocks/coats, and was curious if this machine will handle a nice, heavy wool that we use for our coats? Thanks in advance. My last sewing project was a completely hand sewn, lined, all wool regimental cloak.... never again. Haha
Ohhh all that hand sewing would have been taxing! I haven’t sewn wool yet (just purchased a lovely wool cashmere blend though!) I think it would be best to test a sample of the thick fabrics you are going to work with on a demo machine if possible!
I have just purchased this pattern and bought my linen material. I'm wondering if the sizes are true to size. I'm normally a size small but am measuring more a medium according to your instructions. Should I make it in the medium? Also, it says 6cm width elastic, is that meant to be 6mm?
Hi! Patterns won’t always correlate back to your standard sizing, so definitely go by measurements instead 🙂 the pre-sewing guide has instructions on finding your best size! Thank you for notifying me of the mistake! Correct, I meant to say 6mm 😜
@@behindtheseamswithjess Thank you for replying so quickly. I can't wait to start. You're very talented to have drafted, sewn and converted to digital. I am impressed.
Hi Jessica. I came across your channel via a Facebook sewing group and am glad that I did. I have started to look into drafting my own patterns due to having a non-standard body shape (big chested so nothing normally fits correctly). You have given me so much hope that anything is possible. Keep up your mojo because you never know who you are inspiring.
Oh wow, what a lovely comment! You will love drafting your own patterns, it’s tricky at first but you soon realise you are completely unlimited in design! I’ll get back to posting/sewing shortly, just moved states and need to set up my new sewing room! 😜
You did so so well!! I really enjoyed watching you create this and I love how you learned about drafting patterns. It would be such a useful skill to have and I'd love to learn how to do it
