The marching skills were so much better back then. Alignment hasn't been good for many years. I think members were more dedicated to their performance, and perhaps they were just a bit more talented. I still love the band, but seeing this is truly impressive.
I was in the WVU Mountaineer band in the early 80's as a trombonist and I remember playing this same song. The marching patterns are similar as well where we went into a compact circle, turned and then blasted the crowd with a wall of sound. I think the band was at around 400 people at that time (I can't remember the exact number).
I remember the first time I saw this at Old Mountaineer field. I still get chills every time I watch it. It is difficult to see on the video, but at 1:03 immediately after the band turns outward and begins the fanfare, the majorettes throw their batons to each other. They are about 25 yards apart. You can hear the crowd cheer at 1:07 when they catch them.
I like how When they Go out from the circle at the end of Simple Gifts it’s on the upbeat and their more spread out, I wish they would go that this year or next
First of all, let me say that I do not have a show choir background at all. And I haven't seen a live show choir performance either. I found this group by way of "Play the Game Tonight" one of my favorite Kansas songs. But this particular year show is so awesome! From the whole audience choice concept to the costume changes and overall great performances, I am so impressed with all of it! You've made a new fan here! Thanks to all the performers and musicians and directors and choreographers that put in so much work! I hope that things you learned in this activity have helped you in some ways with things in your lives today.
Doesn't the climactic part of the piece come from Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copland? It's definitely one of my absolute favorite musical works, it gives me goosebumps!
Hello! I am desperately looking for a SATB/SAB score of Paradise City for my new choir. Would you mind telling me who arranged this version and where I could buy it? Thank you and good work of you! Catherine Denis
I was a Freshman playing Tenor Saxophone that year. Marie Burleigh was my section leader that year. I remember playing Pinball Wizard and the Williams Williams Medley. What memories of being in The Pride of West Virginia! Dr. Don Wilcox was such an influence in a lot of our lives!
Greatest night of my life. Was sitting in the end zone. First bowl game after both my parents had passed. My first bowl ever was with them at the Sugar Bowl vs. Florida. And Atlanta had become like a second home so the game being moved there because of Katrina made it extra meaningful.
They were the group to beat, that you simply couldn't beat. I remember everyone would crowd into the auditorium/gym to see Hurricane perform. Basically West Virginia's version of Vocal Adrenaline. And I don't see how anyone could bad talk their vocals, they sound like a recording.
