@@TouchToneDSG ya - I got ahead of myself and I was moving out model 12.. watching a lot of CMP and I hopped on it- he got the 6..as u kno.. but on my build? this ain’t fittin in the Flo- I thought about keeping it as a keyboard summer but still.. kinda wasting the whole “idea” so to speak, of it.. it needs to be the center of the universe type thing.. This must be the most convoluted video I have ever seen. 17 mins of nonsense. So your using the mixer as an audio interface for your computer and routing out the MPC channels to the mixer channels? And then? How would you go about stemming your project out for recording vocals?
My brother-How did I suspect that your time with the Big 6 was going to be not too long?!! First let me say that I mainly produce acoustically recorded projects-jazz, classical, folk, world music. So I am generally using a Big 6 or similar to simultaneously record multiple instruments with microphones. Channel count is not a limitation. It just makes you commit! Motown, the Beatles all recorded fantastic quality albums on 4 track tape. All these younger engineers do is pro tools multitrack to death. If you are just tracking beats loops and samples one at a time the Big 6 may not be for you. Yes you can mix down with it but if your ears and workflow are "in the box" I'm not sure you can convert. Also for $3K what more do you want? You are comparing it to $20k of interfaces, preamps and effects. If you want a more fair comparison price wise between an analog mixer and an interface/computer setup, I would suggest the API Box 2.
I have two BigSix running as aggregated devices on macox so I have double the channels in Ableton. Combining different devices in aggregated mode can be hassle if they have different specs, but with 2 x BigSix it is just running flawless because they are the same and I was told that they made some kind of firmware feature that makes the two work together easyer. I can't find anything about that on their site though so I don't know if it is true of not. But they work perfectly together. They get warm alright, but I never had any breaking down because of it and mine are running 24/7 for over a year now. I bought it to replace 19" quantum 2626 + ferrofish pulse 16 etc and I am happy I did so. Sound is at least as clean. It does take up extra space, but the hands-on mixing is just much easyer at the end of the day. For me anyway. I am only a hobbyist so take my inputs with that in mind 🙂
Comgrats for this video. This product make me confused. At point to sell all my outbord gear, and my Apollo X6 as well. I don’t have idea what difference there is with X6 UAD converters. You compared to an old model. Any way, I gonna buy this because I can semplify my routing and my desk 😅. My home studio is always lacking of room. Usb C right into my M3 Mac no more cable, make me dream a lot. One more thing… congratulation for your way to speak. I think where the big six shines is when you dont look at it as an interface. The conversion on there could definitely be better but nothing beats the speed of the analog workflow. In my opinion get a good interface with good conversion like rme etc and use the big six like a console. Thats where its at
Hey friend! Thanks so much for all of these videos on Big Six. Quick Q: I noticed on this mix there are no sends/returns for effects/reverb/delay. I hear reverb on some of your instruments. Do you print your effects/reverbs/delays and then bring them into Big Six for mixing/analog summing? Currently struggling with that part because I run out of channels if I bring in my sends/returns. Thanks for any insight!
I had forgot some of the features of the Big6 sense it first came out..like it being an interface and sort of an all in one solution SSL branded BOX. I was thinking to was more along the lines of the Xdesk were you can have an analog summing and mixing and tracking but with the freedom to choose your own interface & external effects.. yep it’s a high priced mid level mixer interface with a few SSL bells and whistles. I run all my gear thru my Xdesk and my interface is Avid 16*16 I/O using the Pro Tools HDX system and my controllers are the Avid Dock and S3..I have SSL xrack Eq’s, dynamics, g buss com, and a few other outboard pres and compressors, that I can insert on the xdesk. The xdesk has no pre amps, dynamics or Eq built in. It was designed for that hybrid work flow and the software is Avid and other third parties
Wow only 4 inserts on the big six..I have a SSLxdesk which has 8 inserts and that unit came out 15 or more years ago…I’ll have to live with my xdesk cause I am too old to be upgrading. My future hardware will be a few preamps and compressors. I thought about the SSL matrix but I would have to get that at a severely discounted price like 50-60% off the retail and I think ssl has discontinued that unit anyhow.
You are the low hanging fruit bro..a consumer/prosumer bug to them, now let an Alysha Keys have some manufacturing issues with her SSL Duality board and see how the SSL people respond,!🧐

I have a home studio as well, mostly based around a UAD Apollo and MOTU 828 interfaces. Still mixing in the box, but I have all the UAD and Waves stuff you could want. I also have a Tascam DP24sd that is great for small projects and a Tascam Portacapture X8 for field recording when I do video. Keep those videos coming!!! And tell your wife you need to buy some new gear to review!!!Hhaha!!
I have the same. Unreal! Best monitors I have ever heard. Had Focal, Adam, Event, Krk - all great and a different price point. Also had a recommendation from my Sweetwater rep. Was spot on.

Hey great question man I’ll tell you this the power and the volume are absolutely incredible when you turn them on you know that you are dealing with pro equipment I don’t even go up a quarter of my volume because there’s no need to King Kong type stuff

Interesting. I don't have a big 6 but i do use the little . I use it mostly to bring in digital drum machines to take the edge off as well as its bus compressorthat i love. It wheels very well for this. Understanding the ssl pre amp design intention are important. They are designed to be clean and not as tone to signals. Be aware that Lynx pre amps are this on steroids as they are also ultra pristine. I have 4 of them on my Lynx (n). They are best for when you truly want to know exactly what your hardware sounds like to the extreme without adding anything aside from completely transparent gain. If you want colour in pre amps then Neve 1073, BAE clones of neves, universal audio 6176 and other pres that are usually attempting to to emulate old neves really give you colouration pushing signal through transformers or tubes in the Universal audio 6176, la610 or solo 610. All fantastic while using them for several years. The funny thing about what you are saying about the conversion is why i liked the ssl6. I find the most important part of my chain to be the conversion and I think SSL opted for a basic good affordable conversion rather than putting higher end converters in it. I would not have bought the sslsix if it had a built in interface but i think the big 6 it solved problems for outsole who want that. You did well to make your changes.

And game changing holds a lot of weight so I definitely reserve that comment for things that I really think that are. In that moment in time looking back on it I think I did think it was game changing. But now that my knowledge and experience is growing tremendously I definitely reserve that.
