Hi, I'm Greg. I am a nerd living in Japan. I was born and raised in Arizona. I created a homepage for myself in 1996 focused on my thoughts and my hobbies and named it after my pet fish named Steve I had in college. stevethefish.net I started this channel in 2008 and it is focused on my life and hobbies: plastic models, video games, collectible figures, anime, manga, science fiction & fantasy, Japanese snacks, Japan travel, etc. As with my homepage, this is also an outlet for sharing life experiences, thoughts, etc.
Being a modeler living in Japan, I introduce the Japanese modeling scene to the international, English-speaking world. I use Japanese words to shorten video titles. Common nomenclature used: plamo = plastic model kit sofubi = soft vinyl model kit gareki= resin garage kit

How does this stack up next to the big metal one from Tamashi and Bandai? The shield on this is really cool, but this design seems to only be on this model
I saw the Tamashi Sirbine once at a store It was used and on display. It did not seem to have the same shield. The Tamashi version should be a poseable figure/toy collectible, while this model is a static figure kit. It has no movable parts. And yes, the shield is beautiful.
HA! Oh man, I forgot all about the Enya gag. I had to re-watch the end of this video. No, that was all nonsense and I wasn't serious about that. I couldn't imagine sending Enya a letter griping about upgrading my computer from a 32bit to 64bit OS and taking my dog to prom. 😆
Thanks. A few weeks ago I finished painting the hands. All I have to do now is put them on and I'll be done. Maybe over the 3 day weekend that's about to begin in a few hours from now!
Your paint is far too thick when airbrushing, not to mention it probably needs a good field strip and clean. Mix your paint in a separate jar to fine tune your ratio. Slow down and chill out.. Not sure if you're overly conscious because the camera is recording as it feels your rushing through the processes. Patience Jedi, it's supposed to be fun and relaxing.
That's the difficult thing with V-Color vinyl paints. I'm used to airbrushing with lacquer paints, but if I thin the V-Color paints to the same consistency, I get that spider-web effect. I find it best to not mix the paint in the airbrush cup but in a separate plastic cup. Even then I still can't get it right. Something else is that V-Color tends to dry out much more quickly than regular paint. So once I get the airbrush ready, get the camera set up, etc, once I start airbrushing the paint is too thick and I have to dump out the paint and start over again. I'm reminded of why I stopped doing vinyl kits for a long time. Regardless, it is fun and relaxing and I've resumed work on some vinyl kits I set aside several years ago. BTW, thanks for the tactful feedback. Too many are incapable of giving pointers without coming across as insulting and condescending.
Thanks. Unfortunately, the Bandai Y-Wing has separate parts for the yellow stripes. It would require puttying to completely remove the part separation from that. The Fine Molds Y-Wing didn't have that, of course.
This is the saturn port, the only one with voice acted dialogues. Even though I know Koyori is Kawamura Maria, yet at times she surprisingly sound like Mizuki Nana for some reason lol.
@@stevethefishdotnet it's often hard to work on older models. I had my share of difficulties when I tried to paint and assemble my Cat's Eye figures. :(
So far, so good on this rarely seen Y-Wing kit, mixed media is curious but an interesting approach. I'm chucking all of my Star Wars kits, I'm so disgusted with what the Disney asswipes have done in the name of DEI to this once beloved IP I really can't look at anything related without feeling depressed and disgusted, it's all about communist lesbian space witches bringing fatherless Black children into the galaxy. I fucking hate Disney! I will, however, enjoy seeing you build this kit up, I'll try to remember happier times before all this wokery ruined things.
I've pinned your comment because it was censored. Don't get rid of your Star Wars kits! Don't let them rob the joy you've had from the original trilogy. Star Wars is completely dead now. It began with Greedo shooting first in '97 and it's been downhill ever since then. But despite all the stupidity like helicopter lightsabers and degeneracy like this Acolyte nonsense, We grew up with the original trilogy and Kathleen Kennedy will never take that from me. I never watched Last Jedi and if I never watch any of this new crap, then it can't taint my love for the originals. For the same reason, I avoid watching Prometheus because I don't want it to ruin my love for the first two Alien movies.
@@stevethefishdotnet Thank you, Greg, YT has been shadow banning or blocking my comments when I voice my disgust with KK, Feloni and the rest at current day Lucasfilm, what they've done is very disheartening but you're right, I should not let them rob me of my happiness, even if it's their bread & butter.
It's disturbing what they are doing, but really I couldn't care less. I had a glimmer of hope when I saw the first season of Mandalorian, but that is long gone. I am relishing the fact that Disney is getting completely annihilated. It's a company I have hated for over 30 years. Someone told me that they are going to make another Tron film and I am certain that it will suck. All this DEI and ESG will be the downfall of Disney and all these other ridiculous corporations.
I understand your feelings but don't don't damn the non-Disney along with the Disney. I still have all my Bandai OT kits; in fact I am currently working on a Hoth dio for the 1/144 AT-AT as well as another X-wing, another TIE, and finally Vader's TIE all in 1/72. Instead, go to your local Ollie's and look at all the unsold merch Disney has had to offload because no one wants their garbage characters. They believed the myth that fans would buy a turd with 'Star Wars' written on it.
@wwiiinplastic4712 Indeed! That woman who was Harvey Weinstein's enabler can piss on Star Wars all she wants. For me, I am happy with what Harmy and Adywan are doing to make Star Wars endearing to us true fans. Even though Japanese viewers are oblivious to most of the underhanded political lecturing found in Disney's Star Wars, they still know a lousy story when they see it. My Japanese sister went to go see TLJ and she hated it. Her husband insisted on seeing it with her, and she told him he didn't want to see it. "But it's STAR WARS!" Then in the theater, he was wanting to walk out before the movie finished. And here in Japan, you don't get your money back like you can in the USA. Bandai's attitude towards SW seemed to change with TLJ and they produced less kits, primarily adding new parts to existing tools and focusing on the Vehicle Collection kits. The good news is that MPC will be releasing a 72nd scale TIE Bomber! I am willing to buy that, despite the fact that it'll be giving money to the mouse-eared Kingdom of Darkness.
@wwiiinplastic4712 Not only that, but the pipes on Bandai's 72nd scale Y-Wing can also pose trouble, I've heard. For this sofubi Y-Wing though, I have to create all of the pipes myself by hand!
@@stevethefishdotnet I didn't have a problem with my Y-wing but I can see how it would be for other people. Having a really good pair of nippers helps a lot to avoid snapping them.
@@wwiiinplastic4712 I've heard that if you paint the Y-Wing's pipes separately, you have to protect the snap parts because the extra coats of paint expands their size and prevents them from fitting properly.
It really is a craftsman's kit. After seeing this the first time on one of your videos, I have causally looking for it here in the states. Nothing yet under $100. Unusual combination of different materials. It seems to be moving right along though. Very unique.
I only paid about 2600 yen for mine. I think it had been for a lot more money, but this kit was sitting in that store for several years and I think they marked the price down. They had the Argo Nauts X-Wing too, but that must have sold years ago. I learned that this X-Wing is also sofubi.
@@stevethefishdotnet Several years ago someone through one of the discussion boards I was on at the time tried to sell me some 1/72 scale Star Wars kits, TIE Fighters, Y-Wing) and other related merch from the late 70s, they were unlicensed stuff from Japan and therefore quite rare, can't remember the manufacturer. I almost bought them, but he was asking for a couple hundred dollars for these items.
Very nice work, Greg, she came out beautifully! Funny thing, I happened to be looking through an old issue of Hobby Japan today and in the back there was this an advertisement for the Noda-Ya Gun & Hobby store featuring this Asuka figure and a number of other famous anime girl resin figure kits for sale, what are the odds?! Nice choice of music too, I love FM Attack!
Unfortunately, Gundam: Senjou no Kizuna has been replaced with an "updated" version. It doesn't appeal to me. The big gaming capsules with wrap-around screens are gone, and they seem to be filled with mecha from Gundam shows I do not care for.
@@stevethefishdotnet I didn't see much of the hair in the video but that photo you text me was awesome . I wish E2046 had a better selection of Asuka in the plug suit.
Yes, the show has been mostly the same, although some of the companies in the trade booth area have changed. Now that you live in Japan, I'd recommend checking out the Wonder Festival event this summer as it is even bigger. It encompasses three whole convention halls. One is dedicated to the big toy/model companies, and the rest are either smaller model companies and private vendors. Then there is the All-Japan Model Hobby Show in September. It's smaller than the Shizuoka show, but there are some different companies you don't see in Shizuoka.
There is a kit of her wearing the same yellow dress, in a sitting position. www.e2046.com/p/3557/&title=evangelion-asuka-yellow-dress-sitting It's tempting, but right now it is a very low priority as I am abstaining from all kit purchases for the rest of the year, if I can help it.
Yes, I actually own some UV putty. I bought it out of curiosity. I have not yet used it though, so I do not know if it is thicker than the UV resin. So, I am not sure how it behaves.
Thanks. I was disappointed that there wasn't enough room for the lenses I tried putting into those holes I drilled. Either way, it looks better than the way the kit came. All I need to do now is airbrush the hands and I'll finally be done with this kit.
This was really cool, I didn't know until recently that Japan had a big collectors market on vinyl toys like these, and they are really fun. It's interesting to see these vinyl paints, and it's understandable that they need to really bite into the vinyl compared to others. Glad to hear that your wife was happy with the restoration, it looks really great!
When people complain like that its best to ignore them. I know it's difficult to do but when they don't get a response you win .So never let them get to you and do what you enjoy doing. Thats what model building is all about the enjoyment of the hobby.😁👍
I have some of this models like r-type, gradius, darius, ikaruga.... But i want the best ship.....axelay. and einhander too. I hope plum can realize that dream
