I can add further to the info from the Yorkshire COD site - D/Maj Birkett named Hazelmere after his wife (Hazel) - there was already a flute march called Haslemere (the place) by another composer. He was in the habit of naming a new march and then presenting it to someone with another name. For example, the Household Division Drummers know the march "Out The Escort", whereas the same March is known as '"Armoury House" by the Drummers of the Honourable Artillery Company, as he also presented it to the HAC with that name. Back in the day, there was no internet and so there was some discussion in later years when Guards and HAC Drummers were practising at the same stands. The HAC Corps played "Coldstream Drummers Reunion"(1993) at the said re-union, with D/Maj Birkett guesting on the staff. One of his later marches, probably Coldstream Drummers Reunion, was also renamed and dedicated to "The 27th Colonel", presumably Lieutenant General The Hon Sir William Edward (Willy) Rous, when he took post in 1994. It's also notable that the first phrases of his marches were often heard each year on Trooping the Colour as the Guards form Division ready to march past or march off.
If the Royal Hong Kong Police still exist, i would enlist as one of them. Royal Hong Kong Police became worst 5 years after the handover and their name being change from RHKP to HKPF. The Hong Kong people need the old Police Force.
If my memory is correct this was used in a "Guards"(?) brand cigarette advertisement in the 60's or 70's. The only time I've heard it in full before this.
I really miss the Royal Hong Kong Police Force. The word "royal" means a lot for us Hongkongese... The police in HK today is just a gang of rogue. it is disgusting coz the damn Communist party.
Is it replaced? Sarie Marais has been the Regimental March of the Marine Commandos since 1953. Life on the ocean wave has been the regimental march of the Royal Marines since 1927 but was in use before that, (predates the forming of Commandos). Confusing isn't it......takes a bit of looking up too 😊

Hello Aminu . I am not a Royal Marine . The Royal Marines historical links with British Gibraltar goes back since 1704 . And proud of it. As to your question on when was it played ? According to info on the Web , this is what it says , The Bandmaster of Chatham Division , submitted an arrangement of A Life on the Ocean Wave which was authorised for use as the regimental quick March of Corps of Royal Marines in 1882 . I hope it's of help to you .
