The line-up that year was truly unbelievable: Davis/Griffin, Benny Carter, Clark Terry with Babs Gonzales, McCoy Tyner, Charles Mingus, Cecil Taylor, Toots Thielemans... and I was there! Thanks for uploading.

Always an electrifying musician, it is so good to see Gato during this legendary concert with a stellar lineup. I was 18 and a gigantic fan of Gato because of my love for Coltrane and my Argentinian heritage when he took this turn in his music. Like all great music it almost sounds better today. Thanks for the video. Crazy to see the crowd so laid back and not gelling with the music-al least physically. The mix is not perfect either.

I can copy some of the things that are more basic to McCoy's style of playing. Yet I wouldn't dare try to play outside or atonally - it would sound like nonsense. McCoy can play outside and atonally and it sounds like music

Some of his most exciting and adventurous recordings began with McCoy's 1968 record dates with Blue Note all the way up through his work with Milestone. This is definitely from that period. It's enrapturing.

I have this Double Album, it's by far Sun Ra and his Arkestea at its best. Checkout the Tenor Sax player John Gilmore, how could anyone with any musical acumen claim Michael Brecker as the next Coltrane, yet overlooking Gilmore and Frabk Lowe. Any fans of Sun Ra that doesn't have this performance in their collection, I sincerely hope you can find it; it's a jewel of musical pleasure.

This is some bad shit here...straight up! Thank you to "crownpropeller" for posting this on RU-vid also...man! This is where it's at! I'm just curious also-is this exact version on cd? Not a studio version, which might be just as good, but this exact live version, because I'm not familiar with the tune; anyway, I'm so glad I found this tonight-way to go, Mr./Mrs. CP... P.S.-Just found(and heard)the original version-on an album called "AFT"; it's nice also, but I think this live version has a little edge over the studio version, but the studio version is very nice also and I think I will purchase this lp/cd! P.S. No. 2-Just heard another studio version of this tune, by Brackeen; not like the first studio version I just heard minutes ago-will be careful to purchase the first and not the second studio version I heard! 8-17-24.

Although I'm not a fan of the avant-garde genre, I still think it is apparent that Cecil Taylor was a genius-perhaps like no other of his-or any other generation, before, during or since! And he was definitely, an exceptionally gifted pianist! And for the record-did he ever record an album, playing jazz in a strictly "straight-ahead" context? For years I thought it was true of Eric Dolphy, that he never made an album playing straight-ahead jazz-until I found a series of LPs he made from the late 1950s to the early 1960s, showing he not only played straight-ahead, but was as good as the best of them, during that period! Would like to know is the same true of Cecil Taylor; did he ever record an album in the straight-ahead genre? I think it would be a gas to find out he did! And-from just hearing the first couple of minutes of this video, I could be wrong about it, but although the majority of the context of the music could be rightly defined as "avant-garde", I think what Taylor does in this performance also goes beyond being considered merely, "avant-garde". P.S.: And I could be wrong about it, but it appears from the no. of recordings I've heard by Taylor, he sounds best when he plays without horns-or perhaps even a rhythm section; as crazy and as self-defeating as that would be perhaps for most artists, it appears to be true for Taylor! P.S. No. 2: I would've also loved to have seen or heard this brilliantly gifted pianist, during his lifetime, write or compose scores for film and/or television; his music in retrospect seemed naturally suited for such endeavors as orchestration! 8-16 & 17-24.
