The first time I heard Timothy McAllister I randomly checked out some saxophone material at a local university music library 23 years ago. What struck me was his consistency across the range of the instrument. He is able to round out those open notes just like the closed notes. The altissimo was bonkers. Thank you for posting this Timothy!
Congrats on this! Chandos is known for its great-sounding recordings, and the excerpts of the piece make me want to hear more. Two questions: Where did the recording session take place? (Quite amazing-looking environs.) And, when will the recording be released?
Lucky Middlebury! So many things I could target for praise, but I'll focus on one: I loved how you employed a darker sound for the Bayolo, a contrast that stood out even more when placed beside the Cutler. One of the best things about the saxophone (if you ask me) is its incredibly wide range of tonal colors - second only, I think, to the orchestral strings (and the human voice, of course). It's great to hear a musician who, aside from the obvious technical mastery, has in his arsenal a variety of timbres to "paint" with, and who carefully considers how and when to make use of them. _Bravo sempre!_
I was confused about the silence at the beginning. I was wondering if there was a problem with my sound. Once they started playing, the most I can say from a single hearing is that it is interesting,
I don’t know whether the composer here is familiar with Spike Jones, but this piece is reminiscent of his old style of musical parody. But I think musical blats and farts sound funnier when played on an actual kazoo or similar gadget than when performed as extended techniques by a virtuoso saxophonist. I'll grant that it's something different, though.
Glad you like it! One conceptual idea expressed by the composer is that the piece deconstructs the tune as it might sound if an 80’s mixtape was being chewed up by a malfunctioning, classic-style Boombox...warped, percussive sounds, stuttering lyrics, wailing sax all with the volume cutting in and out. Hopefully a fun and challenging closer to a recital program. Look for the entire studio recording album next summer!
@@timothymcallister4944 That's pretty funny... although it doesn't sound like a "damaged" tape. Too well-structured. More like a "mystique concrete" type of thing, if anything. But what a hoot! I *loved* the moment when I realized what was going on!!
It goes without saying that the playing is stunning (as it always is!), but what really stole the show is that black French cuff shirt. Now you’re just showing off! 🔥
(1) Please keep producing content…y’all’s stuff is absolutely amazing, fun to watch/listen to, and there is always something to look forward to (2) I was CONVINCED I liked your Series III better but the more I keep listening to you on the Supreme, the more of a no-brainer it is.
