😮 I'm envious that "y'all" were privileged with a personal visit and tutorial with Jim Pankey. Thank you for allowing me to share the moment through your post.
Rachel - Kyle’s sister here. When ever you wanna jam with a mandolinist, just reach out to the bro and he’ll get you in touch with me. Granted I’m primarily an Irish musician as you well know, a lot of the tunes are interchangeable. Have a merry merry to you and your family!
Hi Rachael This is a challenging tune. Great Job. I too have short fingers and it took me several years to get my pinkie to reach all these notes cleanly and from your podcast your doing all the right things. You should also work on Cumberland Gap & Sally Goodin they employ the same same triangle fingering. All good exercises for Scruggs Style Banjo
Don't work on speeding anything up; speed comes with comfort, so isolating/working on a difficult section is important. Also, why bother copying others? What's problematic about creating your own version? Do you think Earl Scruggs wanted to sound like Don Reno or Ralph Stanley?
A couple months ago I ran across an app for my iPhone. Price is $4.99 per month can Cancel any time. It’s called the Strum machine and it is Guitar accompaniment with Wide variety of bluegrass Songs. You ought to check it out. Happy picking 😊
Hello! That is Jim Pankey’s arrangement. I didn’t use tabs for it, so I’m not 100% sure if he has a tab for it, but he has tabs for most things, so you could check. Usually he has tabs pinned to the top of the comments on his videos. If you can’t find it, leave him a message and he’ll be able to help you out! Have fun with it! I live the arrangement!
Yep! The first tune is I Saw The Light, second was Cowboys and Indians, third was Bkackberry Blossom and the one we sang was A Beautiful Life. The firs Lot three are Jim’s arrangements. The 4th was my arrangement.
Hi. Just stumbled across you as I was searching out new tunes to learn. Sounds like I'm in exactly the same place as you on the journey. Well done on a brilliant piece played. I'll be sure to follow your progress... Greetings from Scotland...
Hey thanks so much for reaching out! We hope you are loving learning the instrument as much as I have. I’ve actually been meaning to revisit this piece since it’s been awhile since I learned it. I think I’ll do that soon. It’s a great arrangement! Take care!
So I've watched a few of yours and in doing so, it got me to go take a look at the way Pankey teaches .. which I find I enjoy - though you taught me to "slow it down". Get the fundamentals down, don't speed through his lessons. Maybe I'll be faster later on but for now, to take it easy, get the details down and have fun doing it. So thank you. Thank you for sharing your journey. I'm having a lot more fun.
Yes! It’s so hard to keep the perspective that slow work now will pay off so satisfyingly down the road! Especially when you are listening to banjo players just tearing it up and you want to join in at that speed! But I keep telling myself I haven’t earned the right to play that fast yet, because I haven’t paid the dues they have toward learning the instrument. I’ve been a cellist for 39 years. I have the right to kill it on the cello. Not yet on the banjo…
I do that spaz out thing too! .. my heart will beat faster as I'm almost finishing the song without a mistake .. then I make the mistake. Oi. I do better when I'm a bit more "mindless"
If double Thumbing works for the player it won't hinder the song. Single sting playing, may not be for every player due to a neurological behavior in the fingers. Do what works for you.
Love that song! Recently learned to play it on the Fiddle! Can't help but to tap your feet along with that song! And what a message that tune represents. Great job by the way
I recently started your banjo diary videos and am really enjoying watching. Getting ready to start lessons on an old resonator banjo that belonged to my Grandpa and am so excited. Have watched some of Mr. Pankeys videos too and love him too😊
Well that was good, really. No banjo player plays the same as another...and your muscle memory will kick in and appear as YOUR signature style of picking.
Good picking on that tune, and I'm sure you'll see that changing chords will be easy to accomplish...Kudos on picking up the banjo DAILY! Good sounding banjo, by the way.
At the moment it doesn’t matter to me that you didn’t play too well bcos I know you will reach that point where playing excellently will be a breeze. Your voice is simply sweet.
I will reveal the secret of successful playing to you! When you make a mistake, just play on and repeat the mistake a second time at your first opportunity. That way, people will think you're playing jazz!
