India suffers from extremely bad politics. India has a very high proportion of criminals including rioters, murderers and rapists who get elected right from village level & rise to PM level. Lack of education, and ethics among voters is just one part. A servile media and courts have messed up in exposing and punishing there criminals in politics who more than thrive. Honesty is a big disadvantage in India, be it politics, business, media, judiciary, government services. Criminality rules which makes high networth Indians flee to better societies in tens of thousands. Modi in particular pushes a lot of projects to his state Gujarat and stifles the development of states ruled by opposition. Uses crime prevention agencies again opposition leaders . Is not averse to foisting false cases, jailing them and stopping development funds . His entire focus is on his own image building and retaining power thru unethical means. India's biggest issue now is not having an independent media to let people know the truth and an efficient judiciary to enable rule of law.
Right now, US is not interested India, It is not technically strong, with weak Industries & militarily, whish cannot poise threat to US's Hedgemony. Wait till India is as strong as Japan with its Industrial powers, which was destroyed by US & Allies in the plaza accord.Or currently China which threatens US, militarily, advance in technologies & in trades. India is not in the US's gunsight yet.

India is India and not China. Slowly but steadily, the nation of India is catching up. So many people are always prophesying that India will never catch up to China. Well, to the chagrin of so many people, Eventually, India will go over and above China. It will be concerted effect by many nations. It probably has to do with little innovation in urban design or development of new urban centers coupled with massive population explosion. But what do I know. Mystery.
To start with it is a wrong premise to expect India to be like China. In more than 5,000 years of history, the two countries had different beginnings, and vastly more different experiences in the centuries that followed and still drastically more tragic foreign invasions. Everything else is different, whether geography, resources (both natural and human), different outlooks, philosophies and preoccupations. Even twins turn out to be different. It is as simple that. There are so many factors that go into the economic development of any country that it is meaningless and useless to argue one would be like the other!

Outbidding each other overpay or still buying million dollar crapshack in Souther California thinking this is the new normal and better get in now...if majority of buyers can exercise self restraint and enact some buyer protest, we wouldn't be quite at the insanity level we are at now... Besides Millions of cheaps labours supply, India dint know how to being attractives country to foregins money and dint do many things to being attractives when India dint highers level of insfrastructures with many indians dint have a basic educations to makes indians can macth for industrials needs. India is india. Needs to find it's own path based on their culture, environment, social and political systems, focus on ironing out their internal obstacles, and path it's own way to the future. Don't compare or play catch up game with China, which is pointless and will waste resources and precious time.
One minute you talk about not enough starter homes being built, then you talk about green zoning. Greenzoning is not the issue. The issue, as you said, is lack of affordable housing. Buildin more on the edges of the edges of cities is not a good idea. This causes a lot of hidden costs, including transportation and infrastructure (roads, plumbing, etc). All infrastructure is easier to build in city centers. Living in a "shoebox" is just nimbyism. We need more people living in walkable neigbourhoods. Currently in the USA, a lot of people are paying for cars, what europeans are paying for rent or even more. It's no good.
The main key is supply, not enough houses have been built, as you stated, because of zoning or enviromental rules, who wants to bulldoze a nation's green belt? The second factor is immigration. The UK population for instance has increased by around 10 million since 1997, not far off a 20% increase while the country hasn't grown by an equal amount. Who want to bulldoze the beautiful British countryside to house people who most people don't even want to have in the country in the first place? Of course the behaviour of these companies has definitely added fuel to the fire, but they didn't Billy Joel it.

On top of market speculation, importing millions into these countries has pushed up demand pressure and made supply more scarce. Greed is going to further reduce the average standard of living in the Anglosphere and western Europe. Wanting to get rid of greenbelts and farm land to house the imported millions is moronic.
China and India are not in the same category for comparison. India always dream to be like China One thing Indian do well is talk but Success isn't by mouth but by deeds India need several hundred years to get near China.
