Very clear and smart. Great advice about keeping fingers on the notes in the key (for one finger scales).. Do you recommend using vibrato to play scales? (I see you do when playing slowly). Or is it better for intonation to play without vibrato?
Lots of simple practice techniques lead to incredible playing! Check out this video about interpretation! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5dTsXwsKnLU.html
Wow, no ugly constraining shoulder rest, with mostly a Russian bow grip and a concise pure wrist vibrato. Who would have ever thought that would work? What would Heifetz, Elman, and Seidel say about this abomination of methods? Don't let any of the modern violinists about this. What a horror it would be if they ever started to sound like the old Russian greats!
Dear Ronald, Sorry to contact you like this, I am seeking some urgent help for my 11 year old daughter who needs to appear for her ABRSM Grade 2 viola exam in a few days and has misplaced her Piano Accompaniment booklet that came with the ABRSM publication 'More Time Pieces for Viola, Volume 1 for Grades 1-3'. Is there any way you could send me images of only the piano accompaniment sheet music?
Is it possible to get the complete Linzer exercise? My brain starts turning in circles as I continue to shift up by half step. Really enjoyed this video!
Without a doubt you are a great teacher, and we violists are more than grateful to you. I also teach classes and I love learning to be able to do my job, and also say that teaching classes is reciprocal since in the end you also receive and learn at the same time. Thank you very very much! I'll put it into practice right now! this channel is a blessing
I wish you were in Colorado so I could take lessons! Seems like all the viola teachers here are violinists who also teach viola. I'd love to be taught by one of my own, because these instruments are not the same and I have viola specific challenges that I need help with.
The tips of my fingers are very small. If I play half steps with my fingers touching, it will be out of tune. If I wanted them touching, I'd need a much smaller instrument... like 3/4 to 7/8 size violin. My hands are not particularly small. It's the tips of my fingers that are a very small diameter. So there has to be a significant space between my fingers when playing half steps in 1st position. Perfect consistent intonation isn't easy. Should I get a smaller instrument?
As a violinist, just dipping my toes into the viola so to speak, and without a teacher (that's really bad, I know) this is/has been, really helpful. Thank you, Ronald. - Mark, Australia.
@@RonaldHouston Your videos really do help as I'd be doing everything 'violin' wise instead of realising the very big difference in approach to the instrument, the technique and, well, everything 'Viola'. Very next step and though $$ are an issue is getting a teacher, I do know just how integral that is and it really is first on my list. You play wonderfully by the way and the viola has such a different sound that one wouldn't expect from the seemingly small addition of a lower C string. Thanks again for all your help. - Mark, Australia
Really helpful, especially your advice about the loose thumb. Wondering how to practise the bowchanges with the fast spiccato. For examle Kreutzer 13. Maybe you can teach us this etude?
This would have been far more interesting if the prices had only been revealed at the end. As for colour, it's not surprising that you can get more from the instrument you are most used to playing - especially when you bow differently (which you do! Compare the crescendi you did on No 3 and didn't on No 2!). My preference was No 2, which sounds most like a viola rather than a big violin.
Ola! Gostaria de agradecer-lhe pelos videos, tem me ajudado bastante. Aqui no Brasil não temos muito violistas. Foi uma prazer descobrir este canal com dicas valiosas. Muito obrigado.
I like these exercises but my pinky often slips after the down stroke and then lose my grip on the entire bow. I have a smaller hand. I have an octaganal bow. Any tips?
Hi Kathy. Yes.. a common problem. Try a stringvision bow grip available on my Viola store at violazone.com/products/stringvision-bow-grip. I love this product and it provides great support for this! Thank you so much for viewing
