I bought the first iPhone when it was still exclusive to ATT when I was on a business trip to the States with the sole intention of carrier unlocking it and bringing it back to the UK. I had it done about 2 hours after getting back to my hotel room. The first full jail break was a piece of cake after the hoops I had to jump through to get it unlocked, incuding around half an hour thinking I had totally bricked it.BAck then you didn't have a choice of apps that Apple would let you install, you had web apps only, no app store until Apple saw that we were willing to actually pay someone for a program to run on our phones, so in effect Saurik is probably responsible for Apple's app store and their rise after that.

Jailbreak is not dead, my devices running jailbroken on a compulsory basis. iOS without ROOT access would be useless, especially as half of the devices I have cannot boot normally and being completely necessary to actually boot with checks disabled. The iOS I run has 2 thirds of it's binaries replaced with Ubuntu ARM64 counterparts. Not gonna work at all on stock.

i think you missed a lot of point in the beginning of the jailbreaking George hotz was the one who was front man for jailbreaking back in those days apple only allowed at&t when the iphone was launched so they created a hardware and then a software exploit to jailbreak the iphone and use different carriers

Dude Cydia was awesome, I had the OG iPod touch and remembered my bro had the 2nd gen one and showed me how to jailbreak it. I remember having the android lock screen on my iPod touch and it would freak people out. I had to unlock the android Lock Screen to get to the apple Lock Screen, saw it as double security haha, as a high school nerd at the time it was awesome

I miss old jailbreaks. Plus the tweaks were so cool and they slowly died out as apple actually added some. Plus devs stoped updating the tweaks and it just became a new way to side load apps eventually.
