Sad that passenger train travel is treated with such disrespect in NZ. Instead of building the new expressway from Hamilton north they could have closed the gaps in the electrification scheme on the NIMT and introduce modern multi voltage EMUs, that would cut the travel time by 3 to 4 hours compared with the slow Northern Explorer train, which takes almost 11 hours for a distance of 680 km. I understand that remaining overland train services are aimed at tourists and speed is not of the highest priority but to make train travel a viable alternative to car travel they need to be faster and run more frequently. Higher speeds would mean improvement of track alignment however, as much of the track was in such poor condition when I visited NZ in 2010 that it felt like a mechanical bull at times. Things may have improved under Kiwirail in that respect, the new carriages with airbag suspension will help a lot.

Oneday hope to return with my 11 yrs old son on a roady around the South Is.

Is the coal home produced or imported ,here in uk we import coal, once upon a time we exported it
@ronsurgenor745
@ronsurgenor745 27 дней назад
N Z exports bituminous coal , railed from the West Coast to the east - through the Otira Tunnel, 8.5 km up a 1 in 33 gradient. 3 banker locos are added for the tunnel. (Also imports coal from Indonesia for a coal fired power station.)

Sadly, you don't understand the actual principle behind Joe's method. They didn't actually have proof that he was parked in a taxi rank, as there's no sign visible anywhere in the picture that indicates it's a taxi rank. His writing on an envelope "Costa del Sol" and writing on a picture of his car "the Moon" are similar examples of how easy it is to claim something in a photograph with no actual evidence. Just writing "Taxi Rank" on a car's window does not prove anything.

@@Scipted So you don't think the invention of the light bulb, the phonograph and the microchip to make computers and a lot of other electronic things work are great inventions? Yet, you use a cell phone without realizing that was invented by an American too.... And you probably take a flight in an airplane once in a while, again invented by two Americans.... The things we take for granted... You are very biased... National Pride is fine but so is fairness...

Thanks. The train caught me on the hop, barely time to get my camera out. We do not have many trains. These coal trains (in the South Island) go from the west coast to the east coast for export (from the Tasman sea to the Pacific) There is also a daily milk train in season and the Tranzalpine passenger train also in this area. In 2009 we had a tour from Krakow to Tallinn, very enjoyable.

Such nostalgic recordings, and so grateful that people were out there filming for us to view. An interesting fact was mentioned that NZ's reliance on imported fuels when there's an abundance of coal locally. Yes the economics won't add up, but at least it's there.

NZ's EE EMU's - SOUTHERN RAILWAY UK 4SUB EMU SIMILARITIES !! Amusing. These English Electric EMU's, when I visited Wellington in 1986 were still in operation on the Johnston branch. What I discovered however (being a British Railways Mechanical Engineer) was that the EE control & Westinghouse straight air brake equipment on these 1,500v DC overhead units, was identical to the Southern Railway's 4SUB (4-car SUBurban) 750v DC Third Rail standard Gauge EMU's introduced in 1941 by the famous Southern CME Oliver Vaughan Snell Bulleid (originally from New Zealand). Indeed driving one of your units revealed that the handling & braking even felt & sounded similar to the British version. One of which is preserved (unit 4732). Although Bulleid was probably more famous for his Air Smoothed Pacifics, 30 x Merchant Navy Class & 110 x West Country Class) he built during & after WW2. Twenty of which are preserved !!!

Not much of a mention of the feats of the electric rail through the tunnel and longest tunnel in the British Empire in the Otira tunnel at that time.

What a wonderfully happy evening. I didn't hear this prom's night when it was broadcasted but so glad not to have missed it after all these years. Sir Andrew Davis really captured the atmosphere of the night with a fun song instead of the conductor's traditional final prom speech.
