We substitute teachers have a whole other solution to use. We can't "Build A Relationship!" That is what you need a BULLHORN for. Actually... a bullhorn is a bit excessive. A small megaphone will do the job and is smaller/easier to carry. You will need a backup to use if the megaphone does not do the job. Kids doing things UNSAFE? Totally out of control? That's why you need a coaches whistle! Be sure to get a COACHES whistle which has the little "pea" inside that makes the warbling whistle sound. No pea... no warbling,. If you NIP the problems in the bud, you will not usually need the megaphone or the whistle. I tried a doorbell. It doesn't get their attention UNLESS YOU HAVE A RELATIONSHIP with the kids. Like I said, we substitutes have no time to build a relationship like you teachers do. Another strategy is to NAME THE GAME and YELL LOUDLY. Don't say, "Please stop pushing each other boys!" They won't respond to that. You've got to YELL LOUDLY "HEY! NO FAKE FIGHTS IN MY CLASS!!!!" and then the whole class will get quiet because YOU SCREAMED at them. Then you say (more quietly), "That's how fights start! We have a rule that says KEEP your hands to yourself!" and say, "If you have another fake fight, I am calling the office and YOU MIGHT GET EXPELLED! it's a serious thing to FIGHT in class!" By doing THAT, now you have a RELATIONSHIP with the whole class,. Instant relationship. Unfortunately, we subs don't have time to build relationships over time.

'Social promotion' at earlier grades sends the wrong message about academics. I understand many of the challenges associated with holding students back during those earlier developmental years, but the reality of "pass or repeat" at HS comes as a new surprise to many.

The entire educational system has been destroyed via the mechanism of grade curving and social promotion. Promoting kids who are incapable of passing exams is what has undermined order in the secondary schools in particular. Under the old system kids who had little or no academic aptitude almost had to be transferred into manual arts programs in order to cope with high school. But at least that enabled them to enter the trades especially as machinists, tool & dye makers, and mechanics of various types which is far superior to getting stuck working retail or food service.

@@colestersclassroom-teachin105 A clear trend is towards increasing automation of instruction which could ultimately replace classroom teachers with brick & mortar online academy assisted by tutors who may not even be required to have four year degrees. I'm not convinced your argument is on shaky ground, let alone solid ground. American is the largest economy and military power due to its size, but that doesn't make it anything other than that. Switzerland is recognised as the best overall country. Maintaining conflict and keeping freedom is dependent on perspective. A country with one of the largest military machines relies on poorly educated and easily compliant fodder. Too much education questions authority and political ideals. I agree that there is no place for mobile phones in the class room, but the idea that talking to people about random subjects is bad is barmy. Like wise, the thought that countries exploited by richer economies are filled with people dreaming to reposition their ethnicity is also questionable. Maybe the argument to be made is that a lack of critical thinking makes you easier to manipulate. That you need to educate yourself on gas lighting and political corruption, and that the vast majority of that is done through media and technology and is successful in manipulating the lazy and gullible.

There’s no managing the sort of spoiled little brats you’ll be forced to deal with as a teacher today. It’s better that you find something else to do with your time because you’re not going to win this one. In any event most teachers will eventually be automated out of existence and replaced perhaps by youth leaders and tutors with lesser credentials as everything morphs into brick and mortar online academy including of course, baby sitting for the annoying parents who really only care that they not be forced to raise their own kids themselves.

Sadly, the hidden costs to teachers are not revealed to the public. Teachers suffer from obesity, stroke, heart problems, heart attack, urinary cancers, women-related cancers, drug and drinking problems, mental illness, suicide, and death. The lack of medical awareness could immediately shorten your teaching career. Teacher have a high divorce rate which reduces their pension by 50% and only 6% make their pension after 30 years. The Swiss say it better to level early than to wait for events to foretake yourself.
@colestersclassroom-teachin105
@colestersclassroom-teachin105 4 месяца назад
@23drcharles, Agree entirely. I worked in the private sector prior to teaching. It was much easier and obviously much more lucrative. I tell people all the time that teaching is basically going up on stage for 6 performances per day with 6 minute breaks in between - no other profession is as taxing on the body. When I bring guest speakers in for the set, most look at me at the end of the day and ask, “how are you able to do this every day?” Thanks for sharing your input. Have a great Summer!
@marcmeinzer8859
@marcmeinzer8859 4 месяца назад
I had the total opposite problem as a teacher or the problem of noticing that the entire educational system is a farce owing to social promotion and over-schooling of the masses of people who will most certainly never enter any sort of a learned profession. So in other words what you’re mostly doing is babysitting the bored anti-intellectual dullards who shouldn’t even be there after the sixth or perhaps the eighth grade if we’re going to be generous about it. And then it should be off to work to learn a trade. But it’s too late for me to become Amish and I never learned to speak German in the first place so that’s not going to work. I also noticed that I’ve done a good deal more reading than the typical teacher. But that doesn’t mean that I should’ve gone to graduate school to become a professor because I prefer to select my own reading material and there is no such thing as a doctorate in general studies. General studies is more of a major for football players. Other teachers would tell me that I was good with the kids which really meant that the other teachers didn’t really like to talk to the kids very much and just work-sheeted them to death. So I quit to ship out with the merchant marine for 8 years and then went to barber college. Adult barber shop customers are more fun to talk with than kids are. Barbers also have more time for reading than school teachers. After all, the teachers can’t read because they’re too busy baby-sitting.

Good description of tenure. I disagree, however, with your description that corporate employees have due process. Unfortunately many (or most?) corporate employees are 'at will.' I don't have the stats at hand to back up this claim, but private industry jobs I have had were all at will, and while good bosses/managers will provide opportunities for an employee to improve, they don't have to. I've also heard this from many friends who aren't teachers.

This is a great subject, thanks for sharing But I have a problem In differentiating between teaching style and teaching philosophy. Could be please explain to me the difference?
@colestersclassroom-teachin105
@colestersclassroom-teachin105 7 месяцев назад
Thank you for watching. And thank you for the compliment. Great comment. The two are intertwined to some degree, but if I was to separate them, I would say the following. A teaching philosophy is the teacher’s pedagogy. I simple terms, the teachers belief in which strategies & philosophies are most effective in the classroom. For instance, I believe learning needs to be relevant. I’m a strong believer in cooperative learning. And when I use cooperative learning I like to pair students together who are at very different levels academically. The goal is to have a student who is strong in a particular skill teach a student who may be struggling. Both benefit. The struggling student may learn something better when presented by a peer. The strong student has to really take a deeper dive into the subject to understand it well enough to teach another. Another philosophy is “hands on learning” is effective. Teaching Philosophy Statements are often written documents shared with others as well. When applying for jobs in education, you may be asked to write a Teaching Philosophy Statement. There is a lot of information posted on the internet explaining what is involved with that. When I discuss teaching style, basically I’m sharing my opinion in regard to how to execute your teaching philosophy. In the example above, you can execute cooperative learning as both an extroverted and an introverted teacher. You can execute that strategy as both a strict teacher or a laissez-faire teacher. Where they become intertwined is the adaptations the teacher needs to make to adjust her/his personality and style into the teaching strategy. A introverted strict teacher is probably going to want to execute cooperative learning differently than a laissez-faire extroverted teacher. Both can use the strategy effectively, but it will look a lot different in each classroom. I hope that helps clarify. Thanks for watching! And keep being a hero to the future of America!
