The only thing I say holds the PS2 back today is not having HDMI. It had 1080i but no HDMI during that era on any console. PCSX2 has come so far though that it looks better than the original and makes most old games look as good as they would on the 360!
Another excellent video! Again, your deep analysis of game mechanics and the context surrounding each game truly shines-I now have a much better perspective on the distinctions between each MK release, and really how everything came together in general. Great work, my friend, I’ll be eager to see your next video!
It is possible that this is my fav youtube channel right now <3 (also, if you guys like this stuff, Dayoscript has been creating a documentary series called "La leyenda del videojuego" -The legend of videogames- that is suuuuuper worth checking out)
With MK8 DX, I’ve never played so much Mario Kart since the SNES. So much content and gameplay, and perfect and well balanced to play with kids - the main audience in the series, not the experts. That’s why the border protection and the automatic driving. All my kids started when they were 3 years old and join the fun! I really appreciate that, and think that Mk8 is the pinnacle of the series.
Another well made and very ambitious project! It took me like 20 times to watch the whole video 😅 maybe rather separate videos gathered in a playlist for next time?
2:18:05 🪙 (coin unlockables) remember that this game is first and foremost a kids game 😸 The ranking system is good for grown ups and experts, while in this case you unlock just by playing the game. Everyone in every age can unlock. I guess that’s why they also stripped down the game on 3DS, because MK Wii is too challenging for kids. That says a father of 3.
Kids today won’t understand, but back in 1996 that leap forward from 2D platform and faux 3D to Mario 64 was like an acid trip for any kid. It was unbelievable
So many series that originated on Super Nintendo with mode 7 once they got a 3D sequel on Nintendo 64 become obsolete or at least less interesting...I'd much rather play Pilot Wings 64, Mario Kart 64, Starfox 64, and F Zero X than their Super Nintendo counterparts.
Another excellent documentary! I’ve been hard-pressed to find a channel that goes more in-depth into game design analysis than you, while still making it immensely understandable; what a great job of recreating the feel of the original Legend of Zelda experience. Glad to be subscribed!
What a fantastic retrospective. I love how you grounded us from the perspective of gamers at the time, to reconstruct what it was like to be around and behold such an incredibly revolutionary console. A wonderful experience, my friend. Keep it up!
Soutien !
The SNES and N64 were my entire childhood. My personal favorites were Star Fox 64, Pokémon Snap, Diddy Kong Racing, and Ducks Dodgers Starring Daffy Duck.
I live in Eastern Europe. I was born in 1993. The first time I heard about the Dreamcast was... At least 2010. The GameCube prolly a bit earlier. The 64 I've only seen on Chipicao croissants that had Pokémon cards that you collect and with which you could win a Pokémon themed Nintendo 64. The Playstation (1) I've seen and played on in gaming cafés. The PS2 I've seen and played on in gaming cafés and kids I used to hang out with back then.
In regards to Wii colors being washed out and a little blurry I find that happens with using HDMI converters on the Wii systems. If you find an older TV that has component connection it's actually more clear and colorful that matches the gamecube double dash
Honestly, I always loved that they stuck to cartridges. I knew even back then without having access to magazines or media that there was an advantage to good games with fast loading speeds. Mario 64 is still the best game ever made.
