"mothership" by mason bates. when i was in 8th grade our band program went to see the nashville symphony perform it, and i remember being in such awe - i never knew an orchestra could sound like that! i thought it was just mozart and bach and beethoven. from that day on i knew i wanted to be a musician!

Nice perspectives!- this student feels comfortable leading the ictus with his wrist. Maybe, try practicing basic conducting patterns of movement and only lead with different parts of the knuckle - keep your wrist ‘hinge’ steady, all energy with your fingers to the tip of the baton doing different articulating styles etc. - then, once those tools are free with your pattern, musical intent/expression can start to be portrayed and communicated with your ensemble in this case based on the celebration of life after death … 🙂

You’re used to working with high school (?) students, but with this group you don’t have to work so hard. Freer facial expression & ‘stop beats’ would work well here. Don’t repress your enthusiasm & enjoyment!

Thank you for the advice! Middle School and High School! It definitely is difficult not to repress the fun because it's just been heavily engraved in my mind. But that's why I loved my time at this symposium.

Nice processional. I definitely support the inclusion of cornet parts; in fact, I’m curious what led to that choice given what a rarity it is to see in modern wind band/wind ensemble scores.
@jaiofficialmusic
@jaiofficialmusic Год назад
Good question! From a composer's standpoint, it's just a nicer timbre compared to the trumpet sound, which is needed for some of the melodies that I use here so it's only appropriate to give it to the cornets, which still sound fanfare-ish, but more somber. From a teacher's standpoint, there are many schools who do own cornets, so they aren't as rare as you think! But even if they are rare, cornet parts could still be substituted with trumpets. Band directors do that all the time.

This piece may been snubbed by the NJS Edward Cone Institute call for scores this year and the competition may have attracted high caliber composers but every day I listened to this beautiful and inspiring, makes me wonder what was missing from it.Did they really listened and look at the piece? I hope this music gets a big break, from being just on you tube or premiere by an orchestra, to concert halls to becoming a movie soundtrack.
