I read that the jump was performed by SADF SF troops. The movie was shot in South Africa and had full cooperation of the South African government. A lot of the extras, both white and black, were active duty SADF soldiers and the SADF provided technical, logistic and equipment support for the movie. At the time, South Africa was under UN sanctions for it's Apartheid policies and thought that the movie would help improve their public image.
It's totally bogus but it's still fun to watch. I have a unique relationship with this film. The son of a consultant on this picture is a friend of mine.
Oh, my God. I remember watching this actual scene in 1976 when I was 5 years old. I remember my mother then asked me to fetch something from the kitchen, and I wouldn't go because l was afraid the phantom raspberry blower might be in the hallway

A running landing with a round chute is not easy to do, but definitely possible (but you DO have to line up into the wind just right) -- the Russian VDV routinely train for it!
Up until this scene Harry was a pretty good and likeable character. Then he goes all Zachary Smith on the movie. Well, ok even Dr Smith would have tried to coerce Major West into flying the ship rather than try himself.Maybe he was just trying to escape from Maximilian Schell's ham acting.
