My son is going into the 5th grade next year. I did the Orange and Purple assessments and he is definitely only ready to do the orange book. We are doing homeschool through a charter school and they want him to do the orange and purple book simultaneously. Do you think that is a good idea? Or do you think that would be too overwhelming?
Hi, that is a difficult question to answer as it so depends on the individual. However as with maths whereby learning takes place concept upon concept, eg, you learn to addition before substraction. With regard to language, one would learn what a noun is before a preposition for, example. So, with that in mind it is better to complete one level and then move up to complete the next level rather than trying to do two different levels at the same time.

What was the speed of light 6,000+ years ago at the time of creation? Since we have been able to measure it, the speed has been slowing down and seems to follow an asymptotic curve that would wind up at infinity.
from Dr Jay - There was a time when people thought the speed of light was greater in the past. However, modern studies show that probably was not the case, since high-tech measurements have shown no variation in the speed of light over the past 120 years. The level of technology we have today would have noticed even a very small change. In fact, I did an experiment a few years ago that confirmed the fact that the speed of light had not changed over a long time period.

Why if these statements are facts, most of the scientists ignore them? I mean, they spend millions of dollars each year in scientific research.. why would they do that if they are not sure the dating is wrong?
from Dr Jay - Scientists ignore things that do not fit their paradigm. When radioactive dates are inconsistent, they are simply thrown out, since they do not fit the paradigm within which scientists are working. Very few scientists go back to question the validity of those dates, since they have been taught that the darting methods are correct. Recently, a scientist published a serious flaw in radioactive dating. It was published in the standard, peer-reviewed literature, and it showed that radioactive dates could be wrong by as many as 29 BILLION years. However, this has caused no stir in radioactive dating circles.

My children are self taught and I just correct their writing and give spelling and vocabulary quizzes. Is this a level that can be self taught and I just correct writing assignments?
from the author - Your student does not need to know how to diagram a sentence, but it is a helpful tool that is quite handy when studying other languages that have a different sentence structure than English. We include a short unit on diagramming in the Green Book as a final review of the parts of a sentence, something the students have been learning about since first grade. The lessons start with the most basic part of a sentence, the subject and verb, and slowly add each of the other parts. Sentence diagramming can become quite complex, but we focus only on the basic parts. Again, this is not something the student will use in everyday life, but I think it is good for them to at least be introduced to it.

My grand daughter in 2nd grade loves the RED book. I used LLATL with my middle school and high school kids a long time ago, and they also really liked this program. Each day is a little different, and many times they did a couple lessons in one day which left more time for reading books they enjoyed, or writing their papers. You and your child can also read the books not included on youtube.
